100 Science Homework Activities for Years 1 and 2: Years 1 & 2
100 Science Homework Activities for Years 1 and 2: Years 1 & 2
by Carole Creary
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Time Saver, 26 Nov 2013

This is a really great book and has quickly become an essential part of my "arsenal" trying to convey key science concepts to a mixed Y1/2 class. Undoubtedly it is useful for homework, there is a section underneath each activity that "spells out" expected parental involvement. The activities are fun and meaningful. I have also used some of the activities as group challenges for collaborative learning tasks and again, this has worked well.

I love this book. It is a book filled with "realistic" activities for each of these different areas. I have found it indispensable, good value and can give no higher rating. Love the full colour format throughout.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Ragdoll Collector's Item, 26 Nov 2013
I have bought a number of books about Ragdoll cats, being the proud owner of a 2 year old "Raggie." Without question, this book by Kimberley Maxwell, is the absolute best. It is a one-stop Encyclopedia of this beautiful and endearing breed. With over eighteen chapters and just short of 230 pages (nearly A4 sized), it's developed my understanding greatly.
I loved the chapters explaining "the Ragdoll flop" and the mysterious beginnings of the breed. There are literally hundreds of full-colour photos highlighting:common standards in appearance, differences in colours and patterns, how colours change as cats mature et al. The section on hazards and household dangers was a real wake-up call and essential check-list.
The author is from the USA and she frequently references her own cats and some of those who have contributed photographs. I really found this endearing and entertaining. She shows a genuine love and warm style of writing. You can tell she knows this breed inside out.
Although it is undeniably pricey, there is a lot here for the money. I was lucky to find a good condition used one at under £20. The cost of the colour printing alone must be huge and I would not have liked to have seen the number of photos reduced, to produce a cheaper book. I only wish someone would produce a similar book for my second cat- a blue colourpoint British Shorthair now.

A Sound Like Someone Trying Not to Make a Sound
A Sound Like Someone Trying Not to Make a Sound
by John Irving
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars A mesmerizing gem, 25 Aug 2013
As a stand alone book, without the context of Irving's adult novel, this is a rich and beguiling book for children and adults. It is book that draws many questions from it's reader. The worries that children have when they wake in the night are universal and Irving shows a good appreciation of this. The plot device of not seeing the Father adds to the mystery and generates a series of further questions.
This would be an excellent book to use in Philosophy for Education and for stretching young readers in general. It is beautifully illustrated by Hauptmann: the pictures full of a eerie tension and puzzlement for the reader. The illustrations would be a great stimulus for creative writing for teachers.

I love the books in this series and this has proved to be a genuine time saver. There is no need to re-invent the wheel with punctuation. The activities are presented in a lively and interesting way. I have used the worksheets on their own, or with a bit of thinking, easily adapted them to use in group collaborations. Some have even been useful as extension homework tasks. Great resource all round.

This review is from: British Shorthair (Paperback)
Being a new owner of a blue colour point British Shorthair kitten, I was interested in learning more about the breed. This was an ideal book to learn about the origins, characteristics and nature of this lovely cat. It is full of lavish coloured photographs. I had no idea there were so many colour variations! There is useful advice on looking after your cat, breeding information etc. It's not a cheap book but I am extremely pleased with it.

Jerry Uelsmann: Photo Synthesis
Jerry Uelsmann: Photo Synthesis
by Jerry N. Uelsmann
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Prepared to be amazed., 9 Aug 2013
Jerry Uelsman has created an absolutely stunning array of images. The fact that he succeeded to create so many surrealist and amazing images, in an era before photoshop and digital photography became the "norm" is even more impressive. Each image promotes a direct emotional response and you find yourself thinking "how did he do that?" This is a book I would highly recommend for lovers of photography, photographic history and art students in general. Superb.

This was a book I bought again, having moved schools (left my copy there). Working with Year 5 again, I missed it. It's just full of sensible and challenging tasks. It's presentation is simple, shies away from unnecessary jargon. It is quite easy to adapt some of the photocopiables into active learning tasks (e.g. Kagan). I suppose it would also be useful for supply teachers and good Y4 who need stretching.

5.0 out of 5 stars Techniques that can benefit everyone., 5 Oct 2012
I bought this CD just under a year ago. It has helped my greatly. Each track teaches you a new and very valuable relaxation technique. In particular, I cannot rate the track on Progressive Muscular relaxation highly enough. Whenever I feel tense or stressed, on it goes, through my headphones. Bliss.
With some relaxation CD's the music or author's voice can prove grating and annoying after a while. Not so with this. A very uplifting, practical and calming resource.

Took a bit of a gamble on this, vaguely having remembered the show in the 80's. Remembered how gorgeous Oliver Tobias was though and was not disappointed by this DVD. Tobias is perfectly cast as the moody and insular Smuggler in question. The episodes are well written and enjoyable. You get a real sense of what life may have been like at this tme.Great little series, would thoroughly recommend!
