Mush, I know. Minx, sure. But for me, this is Leatherface at their best. Heart wrenching, pummeling, with amazing guitar lines ringing under Frankie's patented sandpaper growl. And the songs, man, THE SONGS! The chorus of 'Lorrydrivers Son' is one of the top moments ever commited to tape. REMEMBER VAUX BEER? IT'S NO LONGER HERE!!!

Oh boy. Grab it. Don't hesitate one bit. Look up 'riveting' in a dictionary and this disc will come up. You know #14 by heart and the players pour theirs into the performance. And if it's your first time listening to these works? Prepare to be blown away. Number nine is fine, very fine indeed, but fourteen is where it's at. That andante? Franz sure could write music. It doesn't matter what I do when this beautifully presented (both physical & aural-wise) recording reaches its conclusion. The world stops. The heart soars. The existence matters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Puts the 'spheres' in Atmosphères, 9 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
There is a brief moment that happens few minutes before Music of the Spheres heads into its climax. That moment is one of the most joyous musical nirvanas I've ever experienced in my life. It's simple, almost banal.. And it gets me every. single. time.

For me, it is well worth the price of not only this disc, but of the whole Solar System.

But you're not me, so let's elaborate on the rest of the music you'll find here, performed efortlessly and recorded in pristine sound. Music of the Spheres is a piece out of time. Ask Ligeti! Langgaard might've been a nut, but he certainly was a genius. Music of the Spheres is music taken directly from whatever spheres he was able to tap and convey into notation. It builds itself, slowly, from the musical mists that you suspect are hiding unheralded beauty & power - and they do. When the composition comes into full force, you are prepared to embrace it and yet it still overwhelms you, again and again.

And if you somehow manage to stay unfazed (which is, given the apocalyptic / heartwrenching finale, quite a feat), there's the spellbinding, monumental Endens tid to finish the job (plus the final piece is no slouch either).

Beware, though - the dynamic range of this SACD is wide as the space time continuum itself, so if you're stuck with a modest audio setup, consider the Rozhdestvensky, a top notch recording as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars What a discovery!, 8 Sept. 2013

I was completely unfamiliar with Branco. I've read stuff about (and heard samples of) Vathek that made me click on 'purchase'. Little did I know that aside from a daring piece well ahead of its time (think Ligeti in 1913.. or Langgaard right where he belonged), I'd be getting a soaring symphony that charms you right from the beginning and never loses its appeal. Branco doesn't fuss about his ideas, he just churns them out to keep the whole work moving. Great disc!

4.0 out of 5 stars Requiescat in pace, 19 Jan. 2013

The most gentle performance out there. That might be either a good or bad thing, depending on your sensibilities, but Faure's Requiem is meant to be gentle, or so I believe. The final rest. The tranquil death. This recording will dress you in the finest silk and lead you there.

3.0 out of 5 stars Middle ground, 16 July 2012

A lively account that was recorded, well, live in 1994 at the Edinburgh International Festival.

That means the sound does suck a bit and lacks the sonority of a controlled environment but it's not haunted by anything atrocious (e.g. a tuberculosis outbreak) and there's a certain punchiness to it, although I would enjoy more bass where appropriate. It takes a movement for the orchestra to get into its 'enlightened' mode but after the poco maestoso, they don't look back. The lovely flute playing that can be found in the middle movements is worth the patience and maybe even the price of the disc itself.

When it comes to period performance of the Ninth, Gardiner is still my preferred choice, but this is an inspired, albeit a little disjointed record.

The Mandelrings might have a lighter touch but that only enables them to make this brilliant, brilliant music soar. Outstanding sound (actually made me consider buying the individual SACD versions), tasteful packaging. This set is as good as it gets.

4.0 out of 5 stars Light & shadow, 16 Oct. 2011

This was my introduction to Busoni's music and it definitely whet my appetite. It starts on an rather upbeat, sweeping overture, which is followed by the elegant and joyful Tanzwalzer, but then the schizophrenic Rondo Arlecchinesco switches gears and leads us into the brooding tone poems that comprise the second half of the disc. And I can't stress enough how good those are: Nocturne Symphonique evokes moods permeating through each other like rolling mist and is followed by a heartfelt elegy. You don't have to read the concise liner notes to be moved by such lovingly crafted music. The last piece feels a little "thin" compared to the previous ones but still bookends the disc well.

The orchestra plays with both subtlety and gusto where appropriate and is capable of brilliant contrasts. Recording is warm and detailed and helps the music sound fresh - although such help is rarely needed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitive?, 11 Oct. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Purcell: Dido & Aeneas (Audio CD)
I would love to claim this is THE Dido & Aeneas to get, alas I'm only remotely familiar with other acclaimed recordings (Haïm, Christie..). That confession aside, everything here is top notch - even those dreaded (albeit HIP) thunder machines that usually just interfere with the music & annoy the listener (see comments under the re-issue: Purcell - Dido & Aeneas / Bott, Kirkby, Ainsley, Thomas, AAM, Hogwood). Here it all melds into an enchanting baroque delight, which the original packaging only makes more desirable.

So, definitive? Maybe. Exquisite? Definitely!

But it'll be you conducting it. Offering so much (both in content & its execution by a certain Mr. North) for such a ludicrous price? If you're looking for Dowland, this set is a no-brainer, even if it's just four CDs in a simple cardboard box.
