3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected, 18 April 2014

This review is from: Ten Years Later (Kindle Edition)
I enjoyed the three musketters when I was young and was looking forward to a new encounter with them. However, this story takes place "Ten Years Later" and the musketters don't appear a lot in it, nor do they seem to operate together. Too much of the book is taken up with the superficial love stories of the young king Louis 14 and his court, mincing men and fainting ladies. Not my preference.

This is not a book, just a sample of one. That should have been stated clearly, even if it was free. The theme, the abduction of a child and how people of Amish belief are dealing with it, is interesting, and I'd like to read the whole book if it becomes available.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting book about a hero of the Wild West, 18 April 2014

This is an old book, so the language is a bit archaeic, but it's not difficult to read. Kit Carson was one of my childhoos hearoes from the Wild West comics, so I wanted tyo find out what he was like. Nothing like the hero of the comics, who was forev er fighting and shooting people. and who was pictured as a b ig, muscular guy. Carson was small and frail looking, but a well respected man who, without even being able to write his own name, managed to learn several languages and become a colonel in the army. He spent most of his life as a guide and a trapper in what was then a really wild country. He married and had children, they can't have seen much of him. I would have liked to know a bit more of that side of his life, but the book was written by a man who was probably more interested in the wars with the Indians, hunting and that kind of things. Carson had unusually high standards for his life for someone at that time, living that kind of life, and he was well liked, respected and trusted. The book will be of interest to anyone interested in the Wild West, the indians and pioneer life.

I was disappointed, I expected a book, but it's only a sample of one. It looks interesting from what little there is, but it was listed as a free ebook, it should have bbeen made clear that it's only a sample of one. I'd be interested to read the whole book if it becomes available.

This was a present, so I have only seen the photo of it, but the lady who received my gift said it was absolutely beautiful, and she was thrilled with it. It needs to hang in a place where it will catch the light.

4.0 out of 5 stars A light read, 18 April 2014

I'm not sure if this book is written for children or adults. The main character is a child and the story is seen through his eyes. The family is the book has Christian values. It's a nice book, easy to read, personally I prefer books with more depth and more challenges.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ligth relief, 6 April 2014

I enjoy Veronica Heley's mysteries and was expecting something similar, but this is not a mystery, more a Christian love story. It's a bit like a fairy tale, the innocent heroine is surrounded by some evil people who want her inheritance,a nd she is resued by "Prince Charming", in this case her solicitor fiance. And yes, they do get married. The difference is that the protagonists are Christians and so deal with the things they come up against from a Christian perspective, and some of their battles with temptation and to be able to forgive are very real. They were both damaged in their childhood and I felt that they got over those things a bit too easily, but at least there was a battle with them. It's an easy book to pick up for light relief. There were a lot of misprints, very annoying, surely that could be avoided?

Life and Adventures of Calamity Jane
Life and Adventures of Calamity Jane

3.0 out of 5 stars A little known lady from the Wild West, 6 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this book out of curiosity, having watched Doris Day as Calamity Jane. Apparently the real Jane was not at all like that and her story very different. This is written by the lady herself. I was disappointed in the book, it contained only the bare bones so to speak, it could have done with being fleshed out a bit, given a bit of life. She more or less lists the bare fact and that's it, almost as if it's not her story, and from other sources I gather that a lot has been left out. You don't get to know her as a person. You need to find other sources to get a picture of her.

4.0 out of 5 stars Light relief, 6 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I've read many of Veronica Heley's mysteries and was expecting something similar, but there is no mystery here. The Eden Hall books are more light love stories where the crooks are obviously crooks, evil, and the hero and heroine, in addition to being very well off, are also upright and decent. I've read many similar stories and find them a bit like fairy tales, a bit unreal. Here, too, the innocent heroins is surrounded on every side by those who do not wish her well, and her "prince charming", in this case her solicitor husband, comes to the rescue. However, the difference in this case is that the heroine and the hero are Christians and therefore handle the problems that c ome their way differently. They are made more real because they struggle with temptation, forgiveness etc. like we all do. They do have a happy end, real life doesn't always. It's an easy book to pick up and read just to relax. I've read two of the books, they both have a lot of misprints which I would have thought could have been avoided, it spoils them a bit. But on the whole I enjoyed reading them for light relief.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful work of art, 10 Mar. 2014

I love the swirls and patterns of pink in this heart, it's a real work of art and is nice to hold. It's bigger than I thought and I'm sure it will look stunning when I find the right place to hang it, where the light will catch it. Needs to be out of my cat's reach, though! It's a lovely and very special gift for a birthday or any other occasion.
