5.0 out of 5 stars 'The Queen is Dead' of Nu-Folk, 13 Jun 2010
This review is from: Been Listening (Audio CD)
Johnny Flynn always releases his albums with the option of good old vinyl. And, unlike a lot of music with an eye on the mp3 market, this work hangs together beautifully as a coherent whole - something that hasn't happened in British music since the Smiths were in their pomp.

No one else could write a song like The Water, it leaves (friendly) contenders like Mumford and Marling for dead. Every other track is a gem too, but 'Lost and Found' is, maybe, the best yet and should have been the title track.

If this lp doesn't win the Mercury prize, the Turner prize and the World Cup - there's no justice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential for all food growers, 26 Jun 2009
This provides a sound foundation of information for the beginner gardener and challenges some of the stuff experienced gardeners think they know... If I was packing my bag for the end of civilisation as we know it, this book would be the first one in!

4.0 out of 5 stars One thing missing..., 8 Mar 2009
This review is from: Tennessee Pusher (Audio CD)
... Dave Rawlings - he produced the last two albums beautifully and his absence here is a bit tragic. The songs are as strong as ever - you should listen to the live versions on youtube to be convinced of that - but Don Was's syrup-y production has less finesse & has emasculated this outing to a large extent.

Just shows, change isn't always progress. Bring back D.R.'s machine!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent choice!, 2 Jan 2009
OK it's for the US market, and pigs are mysteriously absent, but this impressive volume has lots of very clearly presented information for the smallholder. It has a clarity which is absent from the Thear and Golden Cockerel series.

Buy this one first! You'll save money, for spending on your animals...

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than Nick Drake..., 22 July 2008
This review is from: A Larum (Audio CD)
... never thought I'd write those words in the same sentence, but Flynn transcends all others in this genre - not least with the grim humour of his lyrics. There ARE similarities with Drake, the unusually acceptable Englishness of it all (and some of the chord structures), but this is an indispensable three lp's worth of great songs.

So, a great epitaph to a dead (pop) culture. Will the last person out of the UK please turn out the lights and make sure this wonderful talent comes with you.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's OCMS - so buy it., 10 Sep 2007

Not as good as the previous 'OCMS' album (but then, what is??).

A track like James River Blues is worth the money in itself. The rest is merely great. You've got to love this band!

5.0 out of 5 stars My favourite CD., 9 Sep 2007
This review is from: Old Crow Medicine Show (Audio CD)
OCMS have a similar relationship to bluegrass and country music as the Pogues had with Irish folk music - refreshing, invigorating and capable of reaching a much wider audience than their traditional audience.

Some of the songs on here are only very good, two or three are rugged masterpieces. Whatever your feelings about country music, don't miss out on this gem of an album.

Hard to find, but at least as good as the magnificent 'Right Time'. Pay more than you can afford for tracks such as 'I want to know' and 'Stoned out of my mind'.

This is all honest and beautiful music. 'I need a roof' is one of the greatest sounds ever created.
