5.0 out of 5 stars Album of the year, album of the century!, 13 Sept. 2004
This review is from: Van Lear Rose (Audio CD)
I can't add a lot to what other good folks have written already about this fine album. I agree with most of the praise and can only add that this is a future classic that will sound as good in ten or twenty years as it sounds today. Jack White of White Stripes fame is eleavated from a good contemporary rock artist to a heroic visionary thanks to his producing and arranging skills as showcased on this album. And Loretta? I simply adore her. She sounds better and more contemporary than ever. The Lady may be close to seventy years old but it seems like she's as vibrant and good as in her glory days. Her songwriting and singing is as skillful and heartfelt as could be, perhaps even better than when she hit her stride way back in the sixties. Loretta Lynn and Jack White is obviously a recording marriage made in heaven. It's a shame that the best country AND rock album of the 21st century isn't all over the charts everywhere. It's seldom one stumbles across an album that is both traditional and contemporary in the best sense of both words. Have mercy.....

5.0 out of 5 stars Ameran music, down home as it gets!, 25 Aug. 2004
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If You like American Music rough and down to earth this is it.
Buy it! This is great music from some of the greatest singer/songwriters this side of Hank Williams. The late great Townes Van Zandt is there alongside such fine artists as Steve Young and Guy Clark and the hilarously funny David Allan Coe. And if You have the movie on vhs, buy it anyway. Lots of bonus material.

5.0 out of 5 stars Elvis In His Prime!, 25 Aug. 2004
This review is from: Polk Salad Annie (Audio CD)
I have been waiting a long time for a release of this kind. Of course, I wanted a full concert, but as Felton Jarvis and/or Al Pachucki didn't push the "record" button until halfway into the second number, a sledgehammer version of Ray Charles "I Got A Woman", this is obviously as complete a concert as we are likely going to get from february, 1970.
Most of the songs have been done in better versions by Elvis on the fabulous "February 1970-On Stage" album. But that album was really a compilation of sorts, even including two tracks actually recorded in 1969. This is the un-cut, un-edited Elvis as he appeared on february 15, 1970. As a bonus, the producers provides us with four songs from the 17th to the 19th and the package is rounded out with three tracks from a rehearsal that Elvis held on the afternoon februray 18. Individually, these tracks may be available in better versions, but as a whole this must rank as perhaps the best ever Elvis "live" album of all time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another triumph for team Burton&Depp!, 8 Dec. 2003

This is a typical Tim Burton movie and really beautiful to watch and hear. Johnny Depp gives a wonderful performance as the oddball eccentric of detective Ichabod Crane and the rest of the cast isn't far behind in this gothic version of Washington Irving's classic novel. At times this is more like a fairytale than a horror movie and that suits the theme of the movie very well. The camerawork and the sets are marvelous and the production values can't be praised enough.
Although not quite in the league of "Ed Wodd", another Burton/Depp collaboration, this is a great movie. In terms of acting, production, directing and casting it deserves almost the highest ratings possible. A movie to cherish and watch time and time again.
