Millions Like Us: Women's Lives in the Second World War
Millions Like Us: Women's Lives in the Second World War

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, utterly compelling, 14 July 2011
This is a big book, at over five hundred pages long, including the source notes. But this should not put any potential reader off. Every page provides compelling insights into the reality of women's lives during and immediately after WWII. The voices of the fifty individual women interviewed and the honesty of their recollections, leap off the page and are tremendously involving. Additionally, Virginia Nicholson has filled out the background with some terrific research, that reads every bit as well as the best reportage of the period. The strength of the book lies in its depiction of the lives of a cross section of otherwise ordinary women, thrust into the Land Army, the factories and the military, or simply trying to keep family life going, often while their sons, husbands and lovers were off fighting or at sea. A mesmerising read, that I was sorry to finish.

Great little harness, easy to fit and adjust to size, stops dog pulling and, above all, very comfortable for the dog.

5.0 out of 5 stars packed with useful tips, 25 Mar. 2011
This review is from: How to Squeeze a Lemon (Hardcover)
This wee book is surprisingly useful. I bought it thinking to give it away as fun present but, on flicking through the contents, found many useful tips. Who would have thought that making wee cuts in the side of a halved lemon before squeezing would stop it squirting into your eyes? It now has a place on our kitchen bookshelf and is, despite being from a US publication, proving a useful addition.

The Magnetic North: Travels in the Arctic

5.0 out of 5 stars unique description of the Arctic regions, 13 July 2010
Sara Wheeler's previous book about the Antarctic was a revelation and lived on in the mind for many years after reading it. Ten years - and two children - on 'The Magnetic North: Travels in the Arctic' finds her at the opposite end of the world and is, if anything, better than its predecessor. The book describes a series of journeys, with and without children, that Sara Wheeler takes across and around the vast and complex region that is the Arctic. She excels in describing the complexities of life there and, while never being anything other than compassionately clear-eyed, is especially eloquent in bearing witness to the appalling damage done to the way of life of the native people of the Arctic region by the many nations that lay claim to sovereignty over it. Wheeler's writing is clear, concise and often wryly funny. Overall, a terrific read.

2.0 out of 5 stars use with care, 7 Aug. 2009

all done at a very fast clip, and too speedy for this beginner. Having said this the exercises are effective but the fast pace is off putting. As ever, the 'Dummies' approach is helpful but, by the time the 'useful tip' comes onto the screen you may well already have fallen over while attempting the exercise as demonstrated.
