4.0 out of 5 stars Elijah in English with a German in the lead, 2 Nov. 2011
This review is from: Mendelssohn: Elijah (Audio CD)
Surprisingly it is the German and Swede who show up our Welsh soprano how to sing clear, impeccable English. Fischer-Dieskau has got his notes and interpretation right but it is too much lieder-singing for my liking. Also, essentially his is still a lyric baritone, albeit sizable in terms of volume, so he lacks the darkness at the bottom and robustness at the top that a genuine bass-baritone can command but nonetheless his singing has nobility and is most expressive throughout. Gedda is by far the best tenor, combining perfect diction with beautiful legato, and the forward placement of his voice gives out the brilliance and clarity, easily putting all his counter-parts in every other set to shame. Baker is simply born for the part, and what makes it special is the quiet radiance having so much warmth, with supreme diction, lovely legato and great feeling throughout. Jones is the weakest link - lovely voice but wooly with her words, and at times her approach shows she is an operatic rather than a genuine oratorio singer.

3.0 out of 5 stars Elijah in German, 2 Nov. 2011
Disappointed with Nimsgern's rendition and singing, too much sobbing in the voice tends to rob off the authority needed and at times I found him too hurly-burly, lacking the nobility so essential for the part. Auger is insuperable and the only real asset in this set - a pity that she has not recorded it in English. After listening to Baker, I found Shreckenbach serviceable and as usual Tear has got all the notes but I dislike immensely his method of squeezing out the voice from the larynx.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Italian with Viennese training, 2 Nov. 2011

A great voice. I normally take little notice of soubrette voices but hers is much more than that. There is sweetness in her brilliance and warmth in her radiance, and everything is sung from the heart, with evenness across the whole range. Her coloratura is impressive, and there is great pathos where needed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vocal the Best, 8 Aug. 2011
Having owned more than 12 different versions (CD + DVD), I rate this as the best version, vocally at least. Susskind's conducting is sensitive and persuasive. Cassilly is by far the best heldentenor for the part, cutting through the dense orchestration with his powerful, clarion voice like a laser, reminding me of Vickers at his prime but without the idiosyncrasy, and his diction is impeccable. A rich, genuine contralto, Chookkasian combines her customary vibrancy with a touch of gleam to depict the poignancy where necessary. Simply superb!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Mahler singing, 29 Nov. 2010

Excellent singing and sound quality....not so well-known due to East Germany not allowing him out to the West, I think.

5.0 out of 5 stars Konetzni, the older sister, 18 Dec. 2009
This review is from: Duette Und Lieder Arien (Audio CD)
Good sound quality and great singing in her operatic items; the art songs less do in 1952. Maybe the Elektra she sang 2 years earlier in 1950 took too much out of her voice, vocally as well as dramatically. A former mezzo with contralto quality, it is not surprising that there is tremendous firmness and warmth generally throughout her entire range, although one detects a lack of natural cleaving power at the very top of her voice. Nonetheless, it is wonderful to hear one of the great voices between the war in this rare recording of hers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Richard Strauss Lieder Vol. 1, 18 Jun. 2009
Everything is excellent and most enjoyable. Brewer is unrivalled with the richest-possible sound as the best hochdramatischesopran nowadays. Her withdrawal from the Met's recent Ring must be a bitter loss to true Wagnerites all over the world. Vignoles plays far better than his earlier years and has genuinely matured into one of the top accompanists in the world.
