Mindfulness: A practical guide to finding peace in a frantic world
Mindfulness: A practical guide to finding peace in a frantic world
by Prof Mark Williams
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.11

2.0 out of 5 stars Start on chapter four, 19 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
In my view, the first three chapters are neither suitable nor necessary in a book described as a practical guide.
They have been a turn off for me as I feel the long rhetoric, however knowledgeable, is more suited to an academic publication.
My advice would be to skip chapters one to three (even the authors suggest you might want to do that) or you may never get to the practical section and the help you may be looking for.

The Complete Article Writer
The Complete Article Writer
by Simon Whaley
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant and inspiring, 19 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book definitely lives up to its title, covering every aspect of article writing in a clear concise manner with plenty of examples. This ranges from sourcing the best ideas to finding suitable markets, from practical advice on article structures and photography to tips on spicing up your non-fiction writing, and everything in between.
Pitching, record keeping and rights are tackled clearly and efficiently and I would challenge anyone to find anything missing in this how to guide for article writers.
Best of all, I enjoy Simon's easy to read style, lively, motivating but never patronising.

Brilliant and generous advice from Joanna Penn, packed with ideas to help you sell your book, self-published or otherwise. From reviews and social networks to creating an author's brand and much more, Joanna covers the basic principles of marketing in the digital age and how to apply them to your specific needs.
The book is clearly set out and easy to read, with a personal touch which makes you feel the author really cares.
As a new author myself looking for ways to increase sales, I have found it invaluable and refer to it almost every day.
Thank you, Joanna, for sharing so much with us.

2.0 out of 5 stars Handle with care, 15 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book offers some useful tips to boost confidence for new writers but as a professional, I find a number of suggestions clearly over the top. For instance, I would never advise cold calling an editor, unless you have an exceptional or highly topical story, or, in any circumstances, promising clips that don't exist.
There is a fine line between confidence and bluff and in the closely-knit publishing world, word of mouth travels fast.
Read it by all means (such a great title) but take it with a pinch of salt and use your common sense.

5.0 out of 5 stars colourful and easy to read and the author just carries you along, 3 Sept. 2014
An entertaining and gripping collection of short stories and articles, in two different sections, based on the author's travels around the world. A wide range of emotions comes to the surface as Kate vividly describes characters and scenes drawn from her diverse experience and encounters,
The writing is honest, colourful and easy to read and the author just carries you along, infused by her own emotions, her sense of humour and sharp observation skills.

Model Murder (South Downs Mysteries Book 2)
Model Murder (South Downs Mysteries Book 2)
Price: £3.52

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant thriller, 29 Aug. 2014
An easy to read yet exciting mystery book, all about solving a crime without indulging in graphic violence.
I enjoyed the snappy dialogue which keeps the action moving, leading you from one mystery to the next, wondering right to the end who the suspect might be.
Packed with increasingly complex emotions, it's an insight into the human mind and the world of celebrities where struggling to keep up appearances can have the most dire consequences.

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect companion on a battlefield tour, 24 April 2014
This is the a practical guide ideal for anyone wishing to tour the World War I Battlefields and with just 90 pages, including maps, it's easy to carry around. Succinct as it is, this bright little book is packed with information, starting with a World War I timeline and general information. This is followed by two main sections covering what to see and do in Belgium and France, as well as how to get to the sites or get in touch with tourist offices and battlefield tour operators.
Although this is a travel guide and not a history book, it is packed with accounts of how history was made, both known and not so well known, alongside moving poems and tales of local heroes. You'll also find advice on how to trace a missing relative or explore away from the crowds.
The book is clearly laid out and enhanced by the use of coloured panels and photographs.
