I enjoyed reading this, and the author does a good job at re-living and telling his tale. There are some decent anecdotes in between chapters, so that the book is not one long continuous story of his experiences in prison. But even if it had been, I would have still enjoyed it because he tells the story so well.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK, 18 Oct 2013

This book is OK but not that great. That's not to say that it's a bad book by any means; it's an easy read, and has some good moments where the main character travels back through history to some very famous historical events to witness things such as the Titanic, Jack the Ripper, and the extinction of the dinosaurs amongst other things. What let the book down a bit was the repetitiveness of it, constantly going over the actions of two characters that were really quite boring. Although vital to the plot of the story, they were covered way more than was necessary, and it got a bit annoying towards the end. Also, there's a stupid Robot character that has no bearing to the rest of the book at all, and although there's an explanation for it's presence, there is no conclusion as to why the robot is in any way significant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it., 15 Sep 2013
I have enjoyed all of Stephen's works of fiction (Making History, The Liar etc) but would probably say that this one tops the lot. The story is absolutely amazing, and does a lot to illustrate the characters pain, fear and emotions. It is a story of survival, heartache, friendship, jealousy, betrayal and revenge. The twists and turns in the plot are unbelievable and will have you dropping your jaw in shock and surprise. This is an ingeniously well written book and I would strongly recommend it to anyone who truly loves and appreciates fantastic fiction at it's best. This book will stay with me for many years, and has earned itself a permanent place in my heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, 15 Sep 2013

The plot is fantastic and ingeniously written, with twists and turns that will have you starving for more. The main character is a manipulating little so and so (to be politically correct and to refrain from swearing) that you would hate if you ever met him, yet somehow has you intrigued to discover his story and find out what it is that makes him act the way he does.
A very entertaining read, you will not be disappointed if you choose to give this book a go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, 15 Sep 2013
This review is from: Making History (Kindle Edition)
This is a fantastic story of an alternative universe/history based on what the world would be like today had Hitler not existed. The result is not as would be expected, and the world turns out to be a much darker place due to an even more ruthless man having stepped into Hitler's role, and avoiding the mistakes made by the original evil tyrant.
The main character stumbles across a way (with the help of a talented physicist) to alter the past and ensure that Hitler was never born in the first place, but after then waking up in an unexpected reality, he must try to alter history to it's original timeline in order to get back to the world (one that's not so bad after all it would seem) that he knows and loves. In short, he must now ensure that Hitler is born and that he goes on to commit all the atrocities he is known for. This is a decision that causes him some alarm but that may be the best thing for the greater good of man kind.
A fantastic novel, brilliantly written with superb characters and plot. A real 5 star piece of reading.

This is a good, well documented history of the SBS, from its origins, right up to the present day. It lacks a personal feel to it as it is written from an outsider; however, you could say that this is an advantage in some respects as the author is able to look at it from an outside perspective and give an unbiased, fair assessment of the regiment and its achievements. This would be a good book for those who have not previously read much on the subject as it gives a good thorough analysis of the SBS, meaning that you are better equipped to understand the roles and responsibilities of the regiment, before reading any further into the subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, 2 Sep 2013

This book is an amazing story and a great work of urban fantasy fiction. The characters will have you greatly entertained, and you will not be able to put this book down (seriously, I know people say that all the time but my work was being affected because of staying up until 4AM reading!)
There is an in-depth knowledge of African/West Indian culture displayed by the author, and the old, ancient stories have been mixed with a modern day twist that leaves you wanting more once the book is finished. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of (if not THE) Greatest Novels Ever Written!, 2 Sep 2013
This review is from: American Gods (Kindle Edition)
I would give every book ever written by Gaiman a 5 star rating, and would it would be fully and totally justified as his books are ingenious works of fiction. With American Gods however, the star rating system can not begin to do the book justice. No words I post here can begin to describe just how good this book is, you will just have to read it for yourself so that you can fully comprehend just what a great piece of fiction this novel is. The plot, narrative, and characters are all awesome. If you read this book and do not like it then you should simply give up reading, as this is an absolute classic. I cannot believe that this book is not more well-known than it is, this should be the type of book they read in school as it would be very fun to study (a lot of hidden meanings within) and may actually inspire kids to read more, as having Shakespeare shoved down their throats (I happen to like Shakespeare, but that appreciation came much later on in life) is not working. This is an absolute must read!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of My Favourite Books of All Time, 2 Sep 2013
This review is from: Neverwhere (Kindle Edition)
I have just finished reading this book for possibly the fifth or sixth time (I read it about once a year) and even though I know the plot, ending, and characters very well I still found it very hard to put down. There is something about this story that has me gripped from start to finish, and I still enjoy it as much now as I did when I first read it.
This was the first of Gaiman's work I ever read, and the start of a passion for his stories that has lasted until now, and will stay with me until he finishes writing. He is probably my favourite author of all time, and I love everything he has ever written. Some of his other novels may actually be better than this one (American Gods stands out as probably the best written)however, Neverwhere will always have a very special place in my heart as the introduction to his ingenious works of fiction. This book is like Alice in Wonderland for adults, the characters are fantastic and the imagination put into this book is nothing short of amazing. I would highly recommend this novel (and all the authors other works) to anybody who loves urban fantasy.

What can I say? Some stories just never get old. Dickens is an absolute genius and one of the all time greats, easily on par with Shakespeare. This is possibly my favourite of all his novels, a story that will stay with me for life.
