3.0 out of 5 stars The jury is out., 4 Sept. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Well it's sure taking me a time to get used to what this product produces. The texture is not as smooth as I imagined and the taste isn't all that much fun either. Still I will struggle on if the end result is better nutrition. Just a hint - go easily with the green materials at the start and stick to spinach because if you go for the "harder stuff" too soon it might deter you from using the machine. I really do hope this product is of use and I'm not just a victim of marketing hype. If I had watched that dreadful promotional video on Free to View I would not have bought the thing. It did make a rather nice fresh strawberry smoothie - although I added real milk and ice-cream to it - which is forbidden !!! Time will tell if this object continues to be used or goes, with yet another gimmick, into a deep cupboard. Oh yes - it is well made and one of the included booklets is very useful - the hardback included was just mostly promotional American hype.

3.0 out of 5 stars A curate's egg - good in some parts only..., 4 Sept. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A superb cast, splendid locations and high production values, unfortunately are undercut by a script that is not sufficiently clear over delineating its characters and a curious idea of using different actors to play the older and younger versions - who didn't look that much like their counterparts - that added to the overall confusion.

James Norton is splendid as Duncan Grant and looks surprisingly like him but then using Rupert Penry-Jones, who didn't look that much older than Norton, to play his older self was very strange indeed, as was the choice of actors for Virginia and Vanessa who, on physical appearance, would have been much more suitably cast in each other's roles.

Similarly the highly self-conscious photography ranged from the strikingly beautiful, to images so blurred and infested with lense flares that one wondered if one's spectacles needed cleaning. I watched it on high-definition projection and truthfully initially felt there was a problem with the projector! As a result I really do think a blu-ray of this is a pointless exercise as there is so little definition to be seen, even in the outdoor scenes. It's interesting to note that totally different images are used on the blu ray box and by the BBC as well, to promote the series - these are all crystal clear!

Still, overall "Life in Squares" certainly has its enjoyable moments and the cast work very hard, but the ultimate effect is of a rather self-conscious attempt to be arty but not in the style of the Bloomsbury artists - rather more in keeping with French impressionism. And a script that was trying too hard not to fall into the usual trap of biographical movies i.e. being too explicit in terms of who characters are.

Still we quite enjoyed it all - but with significant reservations - and it is encouraging to see the BEEB invest in "quality' productions rather than never ending reality shows or even more depressing "chat shows" with incompetent hosts! Cynical Moi?

5.0 out of 5 stars It just gets better....., 3 Aug. 2015

After a rather shaky first two episodes this series really came into its own. No, it's very different from the BBC original but it is very impressive and very enjoyable. The blu ray transfer is spectacular and the detail and black levels excellent. Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars An improvement on Volume One in the series., 3 Aug. 2015
This second volume is a great improvement on the first in the series. The unreleased BBC film is flawed but interesting and three of the four shorts included - together with part two of the Joshi interview- are well worth a watch!l for Lovecraft fans.

3.0 out of 5 stars For die-hard fans of H.P. only., 2 Aug. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have the four available "volumes" but I can honestly say that these DVD's are for Lovecraft fans only. These rare and now very expensive discs of movies from the annual Lovecraft Festival are a decidedly mixed bag. "Cool Air" is quite well made and clearly based on a Poe original story (Valdemar) but the other shorts included - with the exception of an interview with Joshi - are only really of interest to die-hard fans. If you can pick up a cheap copy try it for interest but as some are now going for $400 for each "volume"- give us a break!

3.0 out of 5 stars The jury is out on this one...., 2 Aug. 2015

This review is from: Haven - Season 1 [DVD] (DVD)
To enjoy Haven you must accept its premise that totally ludicrous things could happen in a small "New England" community (actually Nova Scotia) and be accepted by the "natives" and new arrivals as "the norm". I have purchased the entire series but am struggling to get through the first one as, despite charming and charismatic actors, the absurdity of the plots is getting a little too much to cope with. Still with about 15 more DVD's to get through I really hope things pull themselves together fast!
