3.0 out of 5 stars Questionable., 26 Sept. 2014

Despite a fabulous cast this derivative and rather clumsily directed film is only moderately effective. It's greatest flaw however was Winner's questionable decision to use very physically deformed people to play the demons from hell a tasteless idea that is even more distasteful in the 21st Century than it was on the movie's release. The novel on which the film was based echoes "Rosemary's Baby" in its depiction of a "brownstone" apartment block with "infernal" connections inhabited by some decidedly worrying neighbours has some original ideas and a truly outlandish final twist - not included in this adaptation - written, directed and edited by Winner. Although it held my interest - because of the exploitative nature of the production and Winner's characteristically clunky direction - I cannot really recommended it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent blu ray transfer of an underrated classic!, 26 Sept. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A first rate region free blu ray transfer of this classic film. Director Kazan and an outstanding cast brilliantly deliver a moving and powerful tale of racism, passion and regret in a surprisingly realistic CinemaScope production that has not received the accolades it deserves. The acting from the three leads is extraordinary in its naturalism and constantly undercut ones expectations of a Hollywood movie. Even if the ending is a little too "happy" to be believable this high quality blu ray is thoroughly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fair transfer of the classic film!, 26 Sept. 2014

This review is from: The Heiress [DVD] (DVD)
An outstanding adaptation of Henry James novel Washington Square where a superb cast deliver impressive performances for their accomplished director. A classic! This Pal transfer is acceptable but not as good as the American NTSC version which has a rather clearer and more detailed image and higher sound levels.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Transfer of a Fine Hitchcock Movie., 26 Sept. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: I Confess [1953] [DVD] (DVD)
Hitchcock was a Roman Catholic and was deeply impressed by the stage play on which this film is based and despite being faced with a range of censorship requirements produced one of his finest achievements in "I Confess". The noirish camerawork and "exotic" location adds a sense of mystery to the tale of a priest - brilliantly played by Montgomery Clift - who hears some startling information in the confession box. The audio and video transfer are both excellent and the extras of high quality. "I Confess" is one of Hitchcock's darkest and most personal films and this disk is thoroughly recommended.

A superb collection of the autobiographical writings of a truly remarkable woman whose impressive poetry was firmly on the mystical tradition of Blake and Yeats and whose contribution to academic studies should not be underestimated.

5.0 out of 5 stars The series continues well., 17 Sept. 2014

Kris Marshall makes an excellent stab at continuing this very popular series following the departure of the former lead. Well written plots, charismatic characters, solid acting and direction and superb scenery all combine to produce highly entertaining and undemanding viewing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very successful!, 17 Sept. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Solomon Kane [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
This well designed, acted and directed sword and sorcery epic comes across surprisingly well. With a little more character development it could have been a true classic but remains rather thin on motivation. That said the blu ray transfer is terrific and the audio and video are of the highest standards - capturing the spectacular sets and fx very well. Recommended to fans of the genre and for the rest of us it certainly is entertaining.

3.0 out of 5 stars Here we go again....., 16 Sept. 2014

Totally predictable horror romp that is however well acted, directed and designed with a fantastically immersive soundtrack. However it really is re-treading tired old ground. The blu ray transfer is superb and both audio and video are of reference quality.
