3.0 out of 5 stars You'll need a strong stomach!, 9 Mar. 2015
This relentlessly ugly and depressing insight into Hollywood should be seen by all young actors with stars in their eyes. Cronenberg gives a warts and warts portrait of the LA industry which is both cautionary and too close for comfort. Excellent performances all around but it sure isn't much fun. For strong stomach's only.

4.0 out of 5 stars A solid series!, 22 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
After a rather questionable pilot this series soon got into its stride and has attracted significant audiences over its many series. This initial set contains first rate transfers of admittedly basic source material. Though not classic television Wycliffe still provides considerable and undemanding viewing pleasure.

3.0 out of 5 stars A very mixed bag!, 22 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
What the detective story The Bat and some other non sci-fi movies are doing in this bargain basement selection of 50 movies goodness only knows. That said this box set provides good value for extreme pulp film enthusiasts and a few little gems are hidden amongs the general rubbish too! Recommended with reservations.

A romantic delight and a spectacular new departure for Woody Allen! The Blu Ray transfer has solid audio and video and reproduce well the sights and sounds of the international locations.

4.0 out of 5 stars Although far better than previous DVD releases of Vidor's moderately celebrated version ..., 20 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Although far better than previous DVD releases of Vidor's moderately celebrated version of Tolstoy's masterpiece, this transfer from an unrestored and somewhat damaged VistaVision source is far from perfect. The colour is often rather muddy, the definition occasionally blurry and fine detail almost non existent. Add to this an audio track that was never very good in the first instance, and always sounded unnatural and post recorded, and you will gather that you are not in for a stunning audio or visual experience if you purchase this disc. That said, at almost three and a half hours the film does not outstay its welcome and is charming and quite engaging and quite moving in equal measures with a host of memorable performances from some excellent character actors. As this is probably the best version that will be available, until the unlikely event the studios undertake a full renovation, I certainly recommend its purchase for those who fear the epic duration of its far superior Russian produced counterpart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressive on all fronts., 18 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The episodes in this first series go from strength to strength. Splendid performances, first rate production values, fascinating plots and a very well written script hopefully ensure a successful future for all concerned. Highly enjoyable and an impressive example of how complicated plots can be compressed into an hour's viewing slot without sacrifices being made in character development.

Magic in the Moonlight [Blu-ray] [2014] [Region Free]

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining but flawed., 18 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Woody Allen is clearly influenced by Bernard Shaw, Oscar Wilde and Noel Coward in this elegant tale set in the south of France. Despite a witty script and some beautiful production values Colin Firth is hopelessly misdirected as the "Henry Higgins" central character. He surprisingly totally lacks the charm necessary to elevate the grumpy misogynist into the sympathetic lead ultimately required. I can only assume Mr Allen is responsible for this decision but it's a fundamental error that undercuts both the character and ultimately the credibility of the plot. Indeed Firth never feels comfortable in the alienating role and does not project the mitigating humanity and charm beneath the irritatingly rude surface. Such a shame as it is an enjoyable film in many other ways with excellent support performances from all concerned and a thin but entertaining central idea.

5.0 out of 5 stars Splendid set for those new to Drake's music., 12 Feb. 2015
A perfect collection for those new to the work of this young artist who's tragic early death has made him a musical icon. The perfect accompaniment to Gabriel Drake's recent splendid compilation of anecdotes and images about her fascinating and talented brother.

This review is from: Remembered for a While (Hardcover)
Truly wonderful! This beautifully produced book, filled with fascinating and often moving reminiscences and illustrations, is one of the finest biographical compilations I have ever seen. A triumph for all concerned and a fitting tribute to a great artist whose early death was a tragedy.
