5.0 out of 5 stars A short well-written excellent practical book, 5 Aug. 2013
This review is from: The Topic of Cancer (Paperback)
The Topic of Cancer is based on Jessica Richards' personal experience of cancer. She describes it as her 'ten-chapter emergency manual'. It is an immensely practical book, not too long, and produced, designed and written in an extremely easy-to-follow way so that you don't have to spend time and effort searching for what you want to know.

What makes the book particularly special is that it also gives you simple helpful information you didn't realise you wanted or needed, both practical and emotional.

Jessica herself chose an unconventional way to manage her own diagnosis. Whilst her approach would not be right for everyone, the account of her own approach to healing herself does give you the chance to consider more options to managing your cancer than you otherwise might do. Whatever route you choose to take, The Topic of Cancer contains much valuable advice that will be helpful to you and your immediate family and friends at every stage of your illness.

There is much of value to learn from this book. I have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone who is prepared to approach their healing with an open mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars A treasure-trove of wise advice and guidance, 24 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Julie Meyer is a successful self-made entrepreneur. She sold her first company for a substantial amount of money and has now gone on to successfully found and grow another company, Ariadne Capital, which specialises in working with a wide range of entrepreneurs at every stage of their company's growth.

Julie's book is an overview of the business-world at the present time and is also based on her own entrepreneurial story and the stories of many of the founders and leaders of companies of all sizes and at all stages who she has worked with over the years. It is therefore a treasure-trove of wise advice and guidance which all entrepreneurs can learn from.

Julie reveals the highs and the lows which have contributed to her reaching the position she has achieved so far. She shows what the turning points were which enabled her to grow as a person and also thereby to understand the most important characteristics to look for when deciding which entrepreneurs to back financially in order to achieve success. Along the way many remarkable people have impacted on Julie and she shares some of their insights and experiences.

Julie has achieved the position she holds today, an acknowledged authority on every aspect of business growth and exit, through a combination of hard work, perseverance, and a great gift for understanding the zeitgeist of the time which she is always happy to share. She has also achieved success in areas which are frequently dominated by men and her book includes an insightful chapter on the experiences of being a woman in the businessworld, a chapter which should be required reading for all fathers who want to support their daughters in their own careers.

Every business is having to cope with the relatively recent fast changes caused by technology. Julie Meyer supplies a roadmap for the journey, showing how society is reorganising itself and what each business needs to think about in order to achieve maximum success in today's increasingly digital world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, a useful store of essential information, 24 July 2012
This is an excellent businessbook for aspiring entrepreneurs, entrepreneurs who have hit a plateau and entrepreneurs specifically preparing their companies for exit. From Vision to Exit takes you through all aspects of running a business - from the heady highs at the start, through the growth stages and finally onto the perfect sale.

The book is well-written, clear and contains valuable information, case histories and helpful tips. It is a real compendium of everything you need to know at every stage of the life of a business and the comprehensive text, as well as being informative, also works as a reminder of the areas of your business that you might need to specifically work on at various times.

Although the basic principles of running a business are always unchanging, nevertheless the speed of progress in the 21st century means that more entrepreneurs will become serial entrepreneurs rather than hold on to their businesses for many years. Because it is harder to obtain funding from banks and because many more VCs and angel investors are taking stakes in companies at earlier stages, there is now much more pressure on entrepreneurs to grow their companies very fast and exit within a few years so that investors can take their money out. More entrepreneurs will be selling their companies for valuable sums at earlier stages and will then use their new money and expertise to go back into the fray. This alters the perspective for many startups who are having to think about their exits at an earlier stage than previously. From Vision to Exit makes this point very clearly and explains how to pitch for funding and what it really means to give away equity in your company.

From Vision to Exit is a valuable tool for all businesspeople, a useful store of essential information covering all the important stages in the life of a business. Highly recommended.

The Secret History of the World: As Laid Down by the Secret Societies
The Secret History of the World: As Laid Down by the Secret Societies

4.0 out of 5 stars fascinating, 10 Jan. 2009
I have been interested to read the wide range of comments about this book which I personally found fascinating.

The Secret History of the World presents a different way of contemplating the world that we live in. Whether you agree or disagree with the author's ideas - and there are so many different ideas, links and connections here that why should you agree with all of them? - the book is about opening your mind to a radically new way of thinking about the mystical history of the world and about our own human consciousness.

It isn't necessary to agree with everything the author writes to find dozens of fascinating avenues to explore. The whole point of a book like this is to be an entertaining read and to raise the consciousness of the reader by presenting ideas that remind us that different civilisations did not regard or understand the world in the same way that we do.

We cannot assume that our thought processes and our attitudes to life are comparable to those of our ancestors who experienced their lives at different times and in different societies throughout the ages and had no knowledge of industry, science or technology as we understand it today.
Everything they believed in was based on the much more limited (in most cases)knowledge that was available to them at the time.

In the past twelve months people everywhere are seeing the collapse of so many organisations and systems in our society that they had assumed were fundamentally stable. The book is very timely because we are entering a new era in our civilisation where we will have no choice but to adjust our thinking about many different things. The Secret History of the World can be used to expand your mind introducing original and mystical concepts which have been common throughout many different civilisations in history and for that reason are worthy of consideration when our present-day globally linked and crowded world is heading towards its own tipping point.

What this book tells us is that things are not necessarily what they seem and that history and science and everything we think we know and understand can be turned on its head and seen from a different angle - if we choose to open our minds to other possibilities.

The concept of the book - a secret mystical history of the world in under 1000 pages - is huge and I do wonder how much material had to be left out. I would love to read more of the research because some of the sections are of necessity rather sketchy. I was also very much aware that so few women featured in it. But secret societies have tended to be for men and run by men.

While I was reading the book I thought of a lot of people who I would want to recommend it to. It is a love it or hate it book, arousing strong feelings in readers. I recommend it to everyone who is not afraid to accept that there is only a very thin veil between the world we think we are familiar with and the unseen and unknown worlds which lie just beyond our everyday thought-processes.
