4.0 out of 5 stars I loved this!, 28 Aug. 2013

The title says it all: i know it's not some groundbreaking classic but I adored it. Ramon Novarro is a wonderful actor, and a very charismatic (and handsome) lead. We even get to hear his singing voice (though the printed on soundtrack seems very out of sync-- though perhaps it wasn't intended to match the actors' voices). Overall the film is short and entertaining, with a very sweet love story and despite some use of pidgin/accented English when the natives speak, they are portrayed as good people and it is the white Christian who is the villain (wonderfully slimy Donald Crisp). I would definitely recommend this to anyone with an interest in silent film or Ramon Novarro

4.0 out of 5 stars sometimes brutal, unique noir, 28 Aug. 2013

I enjoyed this film a lot, though perhaps it was a little slow at times. Claire Trevor is wonderful as the icy money-obsessed heiress who falls for Lawrence Tierney's cold blooded killer despite suspecting his crimes. Lots of great support especially from genre favourite Elisha Cook Jr. make this film worth seeing

4.0 out of 5 stars Funnier than I heard, 5 Mar. 2013

I had heard from several people that this was dreadful and unfunny, but I like James Stewart and Ginger so I bought it. I was not disappointed! There are lots of laugh out loud moments and both leads are very charming and likeable. James Stewart is perfect as the shy, naive professor but I think Ginger is brilliant as the nightclub singer with a heart o' gold... though she doesn't mind fighting her love rival! The print of this DVD is quite good, obviously not HD quality but it's not as grainy as some other releases by this label.
All in all I'd recommend it, if you're used to films of this era and definitely get it if you like both or either of these actors :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing film, half destroyed but still enjoyable, 28 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Well I really loved this film. For a start, the story is MILES ahead of its time, in fact I don't think you could have a film like this even today. I thought it was a sweet love story and bizarrely enough the homosexual content (the couple, the gay bars, etc.) was not cut- only the scenes involving consulting psychiatrists and their parents are mising, but nice title cards and photos fill that in. However, it is a real shame these scenes couldn't be featured as it makes the film feel more... documentary? like and less like an actual story of two people and their relationship.
Of course it isn't just about the relationship, the point of the film is to show that the laws of the German Paragraph 175 (forbidding homosexuality) destroyed good, innocent people's lives and that there is nothing wrong with being gay.
So basically I really enjoyed this, Conrad Veidt is spellbinding as ever, very very talented at conveying all the thoughts and emotions of his character, Paul, without any dialogue. I recommend it but probably not if you feel uncomfortable around gay people (though I don't think they kiss and besides, maybe it would actually enlighten you instead)

The DVD print is very good for its age and like I said, the title cards and photos are clear and help you understand the story perfectly.

5.0 out of 5 stars A combination of character drama and Western, 28 July 2012

This review is from: Stagecoach [DVD] (DVD)
I don't know how to describe this film, but it is not what I'd call an ordinary Western. Certainly the settings are Western and the beautiful open plains are Western, and of course there are Indian villains and gun fighters, but for the first hour of the film at least we are merely introduced to our characters, a wide range of people from upper, middle and lower class backgrounds with mysterious pasts. John Wayne plays Ringo, an 'outlaw' who is arrested as the stagecoach travels across the plain. I think he's very good here, the character is a good man but obviously with a criminal past and a desire for revenge. He works brilliantly with Claire Trevor, who plays Dallas, a former prostitute who gets little respect from some of the other passengers and who wants to be with Ringo but fears he'll hate her for her past. Other cast members like Thomas Mitchell and John Carradine are brilliant too in very complex roles for 'secondary' characters.
Overall it really doesn't feel like a 100minute film, the time goes by quickly and you'll enjoy every second.

This DVD is a fair enough quality print and the audio wasn't bad, but about 3 or 4 times during the movie a loud 'beep' was emitted for no reason at random points. However it only lasted a second so it's not too distracting

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting and wonderful tribute!, 29 April 2010
This review is from: Hammer Glamour (Hardcover)
This is a great book, providing enough information without being too gossipy or boring, and with very high quality and memorable pictures. A fitting tribute to some amazing actresses and cult heroines. The only problem was a few of the actresses were less well known and had only featured in one Hammer film, while some 'more famous' actresses were described in a paragraph at the back. Still, I liked it.

And I laugh that the other 13 reviews are all by men! Even a straight woman can appreciate this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favourite writings read by my favourite actors!, 28 Mar. 2010
There's nothing not to like here. Two amazing actors, Basil Rathbone and Vincent Price, read the amazing, enthralling and beautiful works of Edgar Allan Poe, a horror master. Both these actors have been in films based on Poe (Tales of Terror starred them both, Vincent Price was in many other famous Poe films- House of Usher, Pit and the Pendulum, etc.). Vincent Price reads 'The Gold Bug' which I found immensly entertaining, as well as 'Ligeia', 'Morella' and 'Berenice', all excellent. But Basil gets to read much more, including the wonderfully read 'The Black Cat', 'The Cask of Amontilliado' and 'The Haunted Palace.' Two of the best voices in history (film history, television history, radio history) make this a complete treat. The only negative thing is that sometimes Basil reads very fast, and inflects the words in a different way than you might think. But still, I recommend this 100%!
