I've been constantly been told by friends I need to read Neil Gaiman and the reviews for this were gushing so I figured it was a good place to start.

I hope his other work lives up to the hype because this is a desperately thin story that lacks much scope. It starts promisingly enough with an adult narrator revisiting his childhood home and recalling the strange events that happened when he was seven years old. The language and perspective of childhood are perfectly captured but it all soon starts to go downhill.

There's precious little plot and what action there is seems rather derivative and, well, unimaginative. The characters show great potential that's never realised and the story is stretched out to the point of boredom - a major failing given the book is so short. JK Rowling could have knocked this off on a wet afternoon without breaking sweat.

This review is from: The Goldfinch (Kindle Edition)
After the disappointing The Little Friend, I was wary of tackling another Tartt behemoth. The Goldfinch, however, is a return to form. Not as gripping as The Secret History, it's still a terrific yarn full of colourful characters, intriguing situations and stellar prose. Yes, she can be self-indulgent but this is a book rich with ideas, serious and playful. A serious achievement and well worth your (considerable) time.

This review is from: The Great Gatsby (Kindle Edition)
It's 25 years since I last read Gatsby and thought I'd give it another go before seeing the latest film.

A couple of pages in and it's easy to see why, no matter how many millions you throw at a big screen, nothing can ever quite capture the magic of Fitzgerald's peerless prose. To address such epic themes with such economy of style is a towering achievement of literature. One of the all-time greats.

Light, durable and comfortable, this is exactly what I was looking for in a watch. I don't like expensive timepieces because they're invariable very heavy or the classic makes have few functions.

As sports watches go, this has been one of the best I'm bought. Far less chunky than many other makes and it's still going strong nearly a year later. Great value for the price.

I always thought Pyrex was sturdy and well-night unbreakable but this jug was anything but sturdy and cracked about a month after I bought it. There's a reason it's this cheap.

As anyone knows, these cartridges can cost a fortune individually - almost the same price as these 20.

Arrived on time, as advertised and had absolutely no problems. Definitely my future supplier.

Although, as the title suggests, this is aimed at specialist writers there's a few good tips that novelists can also learn such as formatting product description, how to input editorial reviews, author pages and finding the right price.

Easy to understand and written in a friendly, jargon-light style – it's a handy guide to have to hand before and after you publish.

3.0 out of 5 stars Well-written but overlong, 20 Nov 2013

Starts off at a rattling pace but runs out of steam midway through. What begins as funny and offbeat soon turns to ridiculous and unbelievable. It's effortlessly readable but the various plot turns and under-nourished characters will soon have you running out of patience. I lost interest well before the end which was a shame. It never delivered on the potential promised in the opening section.
