1.0 out of 5 stars New app adversely affects existing subscriptions, 16 Jun. 2016
This review is from: History Today (App)
New app cheated me of old subscription. The introduction of this new app has caused technical problems with the old app. This meant that my valid subscription was blocked with 10 weeks left to run. Amazon won't take responsibility for this so I've effectively been cheated.

DAVID BOWIE A MUSICAL JOURNEY: A Tribute
DAVID BOWIE A MUSICAL JOURNEY: A Tribute

1.0 out of 5 stars Shoddy account of Bowie's Music, 15 April 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A rather lazy overview of Bowie's Music with nothing new or interesting to say. It is also error strewn: according to this book Bowie released the album Tonight in 1986, after Live Aid... Yes, it's that bad!

3.0 out of 5 stars New app only a limited success, 2 April 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The paper looks good, the journalism consistently engaging but the app does not allow the newspaper to be read in the landscape format which is really annoying. Don't the designers realise that most of the Kindle Fire covers support the device sideways?

1.0 out of 5 stars An Analysis of Trek that Limps Home on Impulse Power, 25 Sept. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Early on in this thin and over-priced book, the writer claims that TNG is the "most successful" of the Trek series. However, while this attitude permeates her rambling text, it is never clearly explained just what merits such a wild assertion. Is it TNG's cultural impact? No, the Original series clearly has that. (Indeed, the TNG is part of that impact.) Perhaps she means financially successful but that is debatable too. Or is it artistically? Again, this is very subjective and difficult to argue convincingly - especially when Deep Space Nine comes into the mix as in script terms it towers above TNG. By the middle of the text it becomes clear what this writer's agenda is - it's a feminist reading of Star Trek. So, of course, TNG with its Troi and Dr Crusher stories scores highly here. Problem is, most of the stories which focus on these characters are pretty poor and descend to level of pure soap opera. The whole book reads like a student's media studies dissertation and it just plods away in a rather lifeless and turgid way. The joy of Star Trek is not communicated at all which rather misses the point of the programme. However, the good news is that my charity shop will soon be getting the book as a donation. So it will at least do some good towards building Roddenberry's utopian vision...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Survey of Sir David Frost's Life, 10 Sept. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a much weightier treatment of Sir David Frost's life than you might expect. It covers his personal life in a sensitive style as well as the key moments in his professional life. His breakthrough in the 1960s is neatly surveyed as is the triumph of the Frost-Nixon interviews. However, an unexpected bonus of this book is that is goes on to say so much more about Frost's achievements: LWT, TV-am, Breakfast With Frost and Frost Over the World are all covered in detail, often with new and revealing insights. Unlike some modern biographies, the entirety of the life is dealt with - including Frost's final years on Al-Jazeera. There is also a picture section which includes many previously private photographs and a series of key interview profiles which are fascinating. All in all, this biography is a treat for long-time admirers of Sir David Frost, like me.

RDG's Star Trek TOS (1966-1969) Episode Smart Guide (RDG Smart Guides)

4.0 out of 5 stars Some bizarre reviews, 17 Aug. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A concise overview of the series but the episode reviews were based on pure assertion most of the time. And some of the opinions were decidedly odd! However, good to see someone focusing on purely the original series for a change.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poorly Formatted For Kindle Fire, 9 Jun. 2015
The content now appears rather lightweight given the other Bowie books on the market. However, the Kindle version has been shoddily produced: the pages look as if they have just been photocopied and then hastily transferred. Avoid the Kindle edition.

There are some interesting pictures but the text is difficult to follow as it contains numerous spelling and grammar errors on every page.

1.0 out of 5 stars In theory this should be excellent. However, 22 Aug. 2014

In theory this should be excellent. However, the keyboard is not fully compatible with the Kindle HDX. Too many of the shift and function keys do not match up and I found myself typing @ but instead getting ". There were quite a few examples of this problem. I returned my first device and ordered a second but the same problem occurred. So clearly the kindle keyboard does not quite match up. Strangely the device works perfectly with the Google Nexus. So keyboard number two is boxed and ready to return. Avoid this product if you want a reliable keyboard for the Kindle Fire HDX.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last, The Times gets it right for the Kindle Fire, 8 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
With this new April 2016 Times newspaper app, it now appears that most of the technical issues have been addressed. The newspaper now downloads overnight and is ready to read by about 6am. So far, after using for a week, I've experienced none of the old problems of the app freezing or failing g to load content. In fact, it all looks fantastic and you read in portrait or landscape, and also vary the font size.
