This was one of the most enthralling and captivating books I've read in a long time. After the first couple of chapters it reeled me in, I couldn't get my head out of the book and was useless for anything else. The story line takes place over a number of years and just as you think it can't possibly get any worse for John Huffam, it does. It is intricately woven, I loved the multitude of sub-plots and coincidences that came together in an ending I hadn't predicted, much to my relief, it was so much better. This is an extraordinary piece of literature and a great work. My vocabulary has expanded as a result, the language was rich and atmospheric. I can't recommend it enough. Charles Palliser took 12 years to write his book and I read it in 3 weeks, I'm sure I haven't done it justice and I will most definitely read it again. I now have The Unburied on my bedside table and I'm savouring the moment.... I'm just about to open the first page.
