5.0 out of 5 stars Too Many Songs by Tom Lehrer - No, far too few..., 29 Oct 2013

This review is from: Too Many Songs (Paperback)
This is simply a classic. Clever words, which have really not dated in their message. Tom Lehrer remains a one-off musician, lyricist and performer. Seeing the music written down (though, I suspect, not the version that he himself played with such verve and style) is fascinating. The cartoons are in the same league and it's a terrific combination and, even if you can't hope to perform any of the repertoire yourself, the book is endlessly intriguing.
A lifelong fan, I remain, Mr Lehrer, yours faithfully, ATR

5.0 out of 5 stars Mary Fedden and Julian Trevelyan - Life and Art by the River Thames, 19 Dec 2012
This book really captures the atmosphere of the working life of the artists Mary Fedden and Julian Trevelyan, from the 1950s to 2012 when Mary died, almost up to the end still painting! A vanished world full of friendship and travel to exotic places throughout the world, they always returned to their Thamesside studio where they lived and worked with a wide circle of friends and clients dropping in to see them. Beautifully and appropriately illustrated with many reproductions in colour and photographs from Mary's own album, this is also a good read and well worth buying as a present for anyone interested in 20th-century British Art.

5.0 out of 5 stars L S Lowry The Art and the Artist, 29 Oct 2010
This review is from: LS LOWRY (Hardcover)
This long-awaited and beautifully-produced 360pp book from Tom Rosenthal who has been studying Lowry's paintings for over fifty years, is a must for everyone enthusiastic about Lowry's work who wants to see his full range, understand about his technique and his influences and read more about his extraordinary life. The author knew Lowry well, interviewed him for the BBC and discussed his work with key critics such as Sir Herbert Read, E.H. Gombrich and Sir John Rothenstein.

There are over 200 wonderful colour illustrations which I've been feasting on. Some of them have never been reproduced before. There are also many drawings and archive photographs and a useful guide to the public collections where you can see Lowry's paintings 'in the paint'.

Altogether a wonderful present to give to a friend - or to onself!
