4.0 out of 5 stars definitely ok for DIY, 10 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Seems robust, I had never fitted / relaid carpet before easy to get the hang of. Didn't end up with professional carpet fitters fit but good enough for a small room. Looks pretty good. Used a steel bolster to get carpet under skirting. Watch online videos about how to use it / fit carpets. Definitely ok for DIY

4.0 out of 5 stars Depends on how serious a cyclist / triathlete you are, 19 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Value for money 60. Easy to set up. No frills. Noisy if you push the runner into the back tyre too much. Reasonable resistance. I borrowed a turbo trainer from a friend prior to buying this which cost 130. There is a noticeable different in quality but you get what you pay for. I think if you are a recreational cyclist or do the odd sprint distance triathlon and aren't too bothered about the time this is fit for purpose. If you are more serious it might be worth going for a more expensive model and getting advice in a cycling shop, etc. Also if you are a powerful cyclist this might not give you the resistance you want. Ok for me though. Good for keeping fit over the winter. Not sure how durable it is will have to wait and see!

3.0 out of 5 stars Very valuable ideas in parts too much speculation in others, 2 July 2009
I feel quite ambivalent about the book. In parts I was introduced or reminded of some great concepts and ideas. In other it felt like there was too much speculation. I would be interested to know whether any of the ideas have been tested experimentally.

It may be that to explain the ideas a very complex subject had to be vastly simplified. I kept finding myself thinking of other possible explanations for things to the ones provided.

However it is worth a read and does make you think at its best it can help allow a kind of detachment from your thoughts and also help with them flowing through the mind.

This is probably where alot of the ideas in the book are stemming from Susan Blackmore's experience of Zen meditation mixed in with her vast academic knowledge.

It could have done with someone critically review the text and looking for weakness in arguments.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for disabusing you of myths, 20 Nov 2007
This review is from: Tricks Of The Mind (Paperback)
I liked Derren's book. It's authentic, genuine, funny and sometimes painfully honest. It disabused me of some ideas about hypnosis and 'trance'. I think the techniques he describes 'work' on some people some of the time. He is an entertainer and from reading the book and seeing a show I can appreciate its how you blend them together that is the real skill.

4 out of 5 as some of the text repeats other ideas and tools I have read elsewhere.
