5.0 out of 5 stars Strawbs or not Strawbs - this is the question, 2 Jun. 2015
This review is from: High Seas (Audio CD)
Sorry for the heading, but obviously it is not so obvious, that the "Cousins" of Cousins and Conrad is David Cousins of the Strawbs - no idea how he and Conny Conrad found each other, but there are several collaberations between the two of them over the years ... Conrad is even mentioned and included on the "Prognostic" Strawbs Collection Album.

Conny Conrad is a German musician, who among other works, heads (headed?) a Prog Rock Band called Dark Ocean. "Planet Paranoid" is definetely worth listening!

The track listening on High Seas:

The Call To Action (Cousins)
Deep Inside (Conrad/Cousins)
The Rose (Cousins)
On The Horizon (Conrad)
Deep In The Darkest Night (Cousins)
The Moon And Stars (Conrad/Cousins)
My Oh My My (Conrad/Cousins)
It's Just My Way Of Loving You (Cousins)
Not Another Day (Conrad)
Haiku (Cousins)
The Feng Shui Symphony (Conrad)

Some songs are well known to Strawbs fans, the "Call to Action", IMHO one of the best songs of recent years, has surfaced here for the first time.

Well worth listening to!

5.0 out of 5 stars Something for (almost) Nothing!, 2 July 2013
This review is from: Alive In America (Audio CD)
I bought this one for 1.45 USD plus packaging from and actually I did get quite a bit for almost nothing!

If nothing else it is a live document representing the end of the "commercial" Strawbs - Deadlines so to say

After surviving the first shock I would still give this record 5 Stars - as a live recording it is actually good! Yes - there are keyboards - sometimes annoying keyboards - but this is obviously the way Dave Cousins wanted the Strawbs to sound at the end of the seventies. There is quite a heavy lead guitar, maybe sometimes mixed down too much compared to the keyboards, but when Dave Lamberts hits it it sounds excellent. The bass lines are quite clear, the lead vocals of both Daves are good, DC fighting at some points ...

As for the songs, the only really "bad" keyboard-heavy song is "Ghosts". Here the keyboards do not match the amosphere of the song, rather a disappointment! For the other songs: "The last resort", moderate keyboards, heavy guitar. "No return", quite a bit if keyboards, but fits the song. "Heartbreaker" is another song that is not hurt by some heavy keyboarding.

The remaining "classic" Strawbs songs do get very little out-of-the-normal keyboard treatment. Obviously Andy Richards wanted to do something different, but not THAT bad.

Overall for a few dollars a steal, 12 pounds? well .... maybe better wait

Burning For You
Burning For You

5.0 out of 5 stars EU-regulated Strawberries ?, 10 May 2011
This review is from: Burning For You (Audio CD)
it seems that today's EU-regulations had finally caught up with the Strawbs back then (just joking!)! Compared to previous albums "Burning For You" appears to be more Mainstream, more equal in size and colour ...

The strawberries are all tasty with a few ups and downs depending on personal taste (I bought this album when it came out originally and there have been a few changes in my evaluation of individual songs).

BUT even though the title song and the hard rock track "Cut like a diamond" are excellent songs (Cut ... being one of the best Strabws "rockers" over all and not a Dave Lambert song surprisingly) and all alone well worth the prize of the album, there is no "Beside the Rio Grande" or the "Soldier's Tale) that highlighted the previous album, not mentioning the highlights of "historic" albums.

Still - compared to what was /is offered on the music market - "Burning for You" can still be considered a gem (yeah, ok, I am a Strawbs fan) well worth to be consumed with whipped cream or champagne ... there a lot of Hit Albums that could easily be improved by songs like Goodbye or Heartbreaker not even mentioning Cut ... and Burning for me ...

Even the lyrics are more down to earth, mainstream in a positive sense ... (and Dave Cousins sheds some addional light on some of them in his book "Secrets, Stories and Songs").

Overall this is a good album to listen to - certainly not their best work - but still enough excellent songs to give it a 5 star rating - not even adding the 5 star rating for the "nice" cover art - probably the last acceptable cover until today (In Ascensia, if the cover remains, will be IMHO the first "attractive" cover in decades).

buy and listen, this album is turning for you ....

5.0 out of 5 stars Definetely some Diamonds, 14 Sept. 2009
but not as easily accessible as the "killer songs" from the first and second album. Give this album some time and you will find a number of great songs, songs you will want to listen to again - songs that will stick in your ear.

And Electric Land is one of the best songs they ever produced.

Give it time and put the player on repeat!

5.0 out of 5 stars older now, but still running ..., 23 Jan. 2009
on my cd-player once in a while. Even if not his overall best, with running against the wind this cd contains one of his best songs both lyrically and melodically. Even if played to death on the radio back in the old times when radio was still THE medium, it still remains the a great song.

Other highlights in my opinion include you'll accompany me, fire lake and shine on brightly. But also the rockers are not bad at all.

Bob Seger's curse is that he is famous for his "easy listening" ballads while he is an excellent rocker. PLAY IT LOUD and you will hear what I mean.

"Seems like yesterday ..."

5.0 out of 5 stars Greatest Hits maybe but not "the cream", 21 April 2007
I am afraid I have to complain about this compilation. This CD is nothing but another Greatest Hits album, which becomes quite obvious if you look at the order of songs and is fine with me .... BUT - in spite of the title this is not the "cream" of (Steve Harley and ) Cockney Rebel, there are better songs from this period. Where are Death Trip, Hideaway, Ritz, Cavaliers, All men are hungry ...

I would suggest to either by the Face to Face Live Album, which has most of the songs of this collection (definitely the cream) and BTW is one of the greatest live Albums of all time - OR buy all the albums from this period (obviously including the live set) and find out about a great Album band! BTW: don'T be surprized if you do not find "Judy Teen" as a regular album track, it was a single only (and for a good reason) not included on the Psychomodo Album as you can find out if you listen to the remastered verions with Judy Teen as a bonus track - a nice song but not the real thing.
