Waterpik WP250 Nano Water Flosser
Waterpik WP250 Nano Water Flosser

2.0 out of 5 stars rendering the device useless since it could not be repaired, 15 Nov 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The white tube which runs from the body of the machine to the lance the jet of water comes out is made of fairly brittle plastic. Although I was not rough with the device in any way this plastic tube cracked after two years, rendering the device useless since it could not be repaired. This is simply a matter of poor design and a failure to test the product beyond the guarantee period.

Otherwise an excellent product - just poorly made. On the other hand, finding my mouth simply isn't fresh without it I've bought another one. I'm looking around for a way of reinforcing the part of the tube that enters the wand.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but you have to keep an eye on it ..., 15 Sep 2014

Good but you have to keep an eye on it since it switches itself off from time to time. This may be due to the slight pressure resulting from being kept in a shirt pocket - which is where I'd prefer to keep it.

Stilwell and the American Experience in China, 1911-45 (Grove Great Lives)
Stilwell and the American Experience in China, 1911-45 (Grove Great Lives)
by Barbara W. Tuchman
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Won the 1972 Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction, 9 Sep 2014
This is the first book I ever read by Barbara Tuchman, and as a result I have read them all. She was without doubt one of the most able American historians of the 20th century. More than just a biography of Stilwell, her book is full of insights that evoke a time of transformation in Chinese history. it provides a platform for the understanding of the China that followed 1945. A reader could go on without embarrassment to read Wild Swans, Three Daughters of China by Jung Chang.

Ack-Ack: Britain's Defence Against Air Attack During the Second World War
by General Sir Frederick Pile
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Authoritative, 29 Jun 2014

This is a book to read if you want to know the facts about ack-ack batteries, as I did. It's not entertaining as such. It is detailed and provides a valuable historical record of its limited subject.

4.0 out of 5 stars Did what I wanted, 29 Jun 2014

I used this book to research women's underwear for a particular period I was writing a story about - I like being accurate in my descriptions. It did the job perfectly well as far as i was concerned but I know nothing about fashion to say anything more.

Not particularly inspiring to read but a good place to get an overview. It's not a book I'd read for entertainment.

1.0 out of 5 stars Just about unreadable, 3 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I am very disappointed. Apart from a few flashes of genius, I agree, the prose is merely pretentious. The characters are merely silly, without exception. I had no sense of realism whatever and have been unable to finish the book.

Arthur Phillip: Sailor, Mercenary, Governor, Spy
Arthur Phillip: Sailor, Mercenary, Governor, Spy
by Michael Pembroke
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £14.01

4.0 out of 5 stars Elegantly written portrait of a man and an age, 3 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Although it appears not an enormous amount is known about Phillip we are given a good insight into the man and the age he lived in. Although just a little pretentious in places I found his language entertaining in itself, coloured as it is, I suspect, by the number of 18th century texts the author read when researching the book. This lent a flavour to the book without which it would be a lesser work.

Poor editing marred one of the early chapters where the same ideas are expressed in three consecutive paragraphs - but don't let this put you off the book. The true-life origins of the plot for one of the Hornblower novels can also be discovered in these pages.
