The Goldfinch
The Goldfinch
by Donna Tartt
Edition: Hardcover

3.0 out of 5 stars Much ado about too much, 8 Jun. 2016

This review is from: The Goldfinch (Hardcover)
The beginning is brilliant, very promising, and all through the book I was worried for the painting. But I began to dislike the characters intensely when all the drug-taking came into it and from there it went downhill, becoming very unrealistic. I regret the current trend for books to be as big as bricks, giving the impression that they are sloppily written. Concision is a skill lacking in many contemporary authors, though I suspect it is the fault of the publishers who have cut out the editing part of publishing.

I did not like the structure of this book which went round and round in circles; I know the author was advised to do it differently but she refused. A pity, as there is too much repetition and it could have been much shorter. Also the zodiac thing is pointless and contrived. Otherwise, the story itself is compelling and I liked the setting. The editors should have been left to do their job.

Out of This Century: The Autobiography of Peggy Guggenheim
Out of This Century: The Autobiography of Peggy Guggenheim
by Peggy Guggenheim
Edition: Paperback
Price: £10.68

4.0 out of 5 stars money matters, 6 Feb. 2016

Peggy Guggenheim comes across as an extremely generous character, handing out houses left right and centre to her friends. She does not dwell too long on her unhappy and stifling childhood, which she describes as a long agony - as soon as she was able she moved to Paris, mingled with the art world where, with all her money, she was welcomed with open arms and ready beds. Yet she was never happier than when wandering alone through the streets of Venice. Interesting, often funny, and well-written.

Searle's pictorial interpretation of many unfamiliar bookseller's terms, at once funny and educational. There's a helpful glossary at the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars another world, 24 Nov. 2013

I forced myself to read slowly, slowly, one chapter each evening, because I didn't want it to finish. A familiar world but just enough scary elements to make me hold my breath.

5.0 out of 5 stars back to childhood, 24 Nov. 2013

Fold-out pages with lots of dragons and medieval settings to colour in, on the verso too (good for my brain and concentration).
