Schizophrenic Disorders: Theory and Treatment from a Psychodynamic Point of View

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fundamental Psychodynamic Aproach to Schizophrenia, 25 Feb 2010
A magnificient, state of the art, exploration of the psychodynamic treatment method for the severe psychic disorders, with the focus on schizophrenia.
The book offers an excellent review of several theories on schizophrenia, bringing together the work of psycho-analists on both sides of the ocean, conecting the work of the Kleinian school with the investigation of the Ego Psychology. The author shows great knowledge on both, and ads a personal account of the theories and techniques.
The book is also very good in providing a framework to the clinical practice in institutions.

This is already a classic by one of the most talented therapists of schizophrenic disorders.
It is most suited for those who already have some knowledge on the psychodynamic treatment process and it will be the most valuable book for clinicians.

You MUST buy one copy before it runs out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reference Book to use with Millon's MACI, 25 Feb 2010
If you are using the MACI this is the book to get first: simple and clear text providing a method to use the results of the test, how to build a profile and write a report. I found it very useful and helpful.

Splitting and Projective Identification

5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic on Projective Identification, 25 Feb 2010
An excellent book on the subject of Projective Identification, a psychodynamic concept developed by Melanie Klein and her group of followers, namely Wilfred Bion, Hanna Segal and Herbert Rosenfeld.

Probably the J. S. Grotstein book is the best introduction on the subject from a post-kleinian and post-bionian standpoint. Highly recomended and can be complemented by the T. H. Ogden book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Bargain on Art Deco, 25 Feb 2010
I agree that this is not the best buy on Art Deco but it is maybe the best value for money you can find.
There are good pictures and the text is also great. We would like to have some more colour pictures or more recent photos, with better quality but ...
I highly recommend the book.

New Family Interventions and Associated Research in Psychiatric Disorders: Gedenkschrift in Honor of Michael J. Goldstein (Springer Medicine)
by Annette Schaub
Edition: Paperback
Price: £38.07

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful Review of Family Interventions for Psychosis, 25 Feb 2010
The book provides a review of recent research of Family Interventions for families of persons suffering from a psychotic disorder. It is a collection of scientific papers on the subject that gives a global view of the empirical research done in the field.
It is a good book for those that already have some knowledge about Familiy Intervention for Psychosis and about Expressed Emotion (EE). Not suited for those entering the subject and for those who look for a clinical manual. Is is a very good reference in terms of research.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading on Psychotic Disorders, 29 Jan 2010
The "Psychotic Wavelength" by the late Dr. Richard Lucas is a book that provides an accessible way (in a clear language with limited use of jargon) of using psychoanalytic concepts in general psychiatry, more specifically in the understanding and treatment of patients of the psychotic spectrum (including Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder).
The core idea of this work is that psychodynamic ideas and way of listening to the patient can be of an enormous relevance when clinicians are facing a psychotic state.
Dr. Lucas argues that when listening to a person with a psychotic disorder one should try to understand if we are in contact with the psychotic or non-psychotic part of the personality (an idea previously developed by Wilfred Bion), trying to establish an emotional contact with the patient in order to have a positive therapeutic relationship.

The book provides a high quality theoretical framework, clinical discussions and plenty of interesting clinical vignettes that help to understand clearly Dr. Lucas ideas.

The book is divided in 5 parts:

1 - The Case for a Psychoanalytic Perspective on Psychosis
2 - A Review of Psychoanalytic Theories about Psychosis
3 - The Psychotic Wavelength
4 - The Psychotic Wavelength in Affective Disorders
5 - The Implications for Management and Education

This book is essential to all those working with persons suffering from psychotic disorders (both psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, social workers, psychotherapists, psychoanalysts, mental health managers and also family members and other carers).
It will provide a fantastic starting point for students and junior staff members, and an opportunity to review concepts for those more experienced, being very helpful in the effort to bridge the current gap between psychiatry and psychoanalysis.

In short, Dr. Lucas provides a strong demonstration of the psychoanalytic contribution to the undestanding and treatment of psychotic disorders and indulges us with an excellent book.

5.0 out of 5 stars One way to read W.R. Bion..., 6 Jan 2010
J.S. Grotstein was analysed by W.R. Bion and in this book describes both the man, the analyst and the author, giving a broad perspective on Bion.
The book is beatifully written in a style close to poetic, always providing a fresh and stimulating approach to Bion ideas.

For those looking for a Bion biography: Wilfred Bion: His Life and Works, 1897-1979

For those who want an introduction to Bion thought: New Introduction to the Work of Bion

Or: Clinical Thinking of Wilfred Bion (Makers of Modern Psychotherapy)

Those who want a fresh look at Bion's and that are already «Bionians» will love this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read in the subject of Projective Identification, 6 Jan 2010
Thomas Ogden first book has become a classic. It deals with the subject of Projective Identification and how it can be used as a therapeutic tool in Psychoanalysis and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy. It starts from Melanie Klein and Wilfred Bion concepts and the author elaborates is own view.
The book has plenty of clinical examples, simple and clear, yet very interesting, theoretical ideas. Provides a good introduction to the subject and it is also very stimulating for those more advanced in clinical practice.
It is also very useful for those who want to make use of psychodynamic concepts in psychiatric practice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Schizophrenias Psychotherapy, 6 Jan 2010
Excellent book, a must read for those interested in Psychotherapy and Psychosocial Treatment for Schizophrenias and Psychosis.
The book is a report of the research done in Scandinavia, providing clinical evidence for Psychotherapy of people suffering of Psychosis. The book also provides a glimpse of the long and continuous effort made by Yrjo Alanen and other coleagues since the 1950's - the interventions, models and interventions proposed are the result of long-time research and practice.
The book will please both clinicians and researchers, but also undergraduate students interested in the subject of Psychosis.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good + Reference Book for French Art Deco Furniture, 6 Jan 2010
Good + Reference Book for French Art Deco Period Furniture. Well written and with a considerable amount of illustrations / photos (unfortunately most of the photos are black and white).
Alastair Duncan is an excellent specialist in Art Deco and if you can afford the more recent «Art Deco Complete» you should go for that. Art Deco Complete: The Definitive Guide to the Decorative Arts of the 1920s and 1930s
If not, this book is very good but it would benefit with more colour photos.
