I couldn't give this five stars because of the fact that Jacko is a static character that every time he begins to show some growth the writers put him right back into his box and it doesn't ring true. Karl Howman's Jacko is a sweetheart who tells everyone from the second half of the series on that he has a "hole" that needs filled. If he had been given the love and support that he gave everyone else maybe he wouldn't have run off to Cairo - maybe it's looking back from now to the 1980's when the series started that makes me frustrated with the "formula" that was used - you had a show that worked so you didn't grow. The series could be used in a college psych class to illustrate how low expectations are what people will live up to if that is all that they hear - you will get very tired of hearing "Peter Pan" syndrome (obviously it had just been coined at that time). I binged the entire series in 3 days - because of the lead - that man has charisma - as for the rest of the cast - especially the women - you just wished he could have found a real one instead of these stereotypes - but it was a different time in society and this is a snapshot of that time - Praise be that it is over!

The boats still out on this, my husband decided on bed instead of watching - he said it was just too depressing - and he hadn't even seen the last episode of the season! I really like Peter Davison so I plan on getting season 2 to see if things get better - the acting in the series is good, but Lisa Bill's wife is a character I despise - as if one person could go around an island that small wreaking havoc and still be accepted by everyone - this is a drama people with tragic overtones, a few smiles do not make this light viewing

5.0 out of 5 stars I would recommend for any Doctor Who, 10 Oct. 2014

This was well worth the money and I already had the episode - but all the extra's - especially the five(ish) doctors - made it well worth the price. I would recommend for any Doctor Who fan

5.0 out of 5 stars David Tennant is raw, 15 Mar. 2014

This is a tough story and if you are not comfortable with children in harms way this story will be a difficult one for you because it starts with the death of a ten year old boy but the performances will keep you riveted. But I have done this review before under DVD, I bought a region free Blu-ray player just so I could get this Blu-ray - the extras were well worth it since there were several additional scenes and interviews on it. It is worth the money if you like extras.

5.0 out of 5 stars So pleasant, 15 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have to tell you that I thoroughly enjoy British television and my husband often does too, but this is one that he just doesn't get but oh I do. It is the story of a late middle age couple who find each other after years of separation, but it is so much more then that. It is a character study that anyone can identify with. The characters aren't perfect; they are human. It has a slow pace and it covers their daily lives with humor and very little drama. Too often life is hectic, demeaning, and cruel, but you can sit back with Lionel and Jean and find peace and a smile on your face.

4.0 out of 5 stars Depends on the episode, 15 Mar. 2013

Some real talent here, but some of the scenes have little to do with any love I've ever seen - I think the actors could have done a better job without the director deciding how their characters should react, So I feel as if they were stilted instead of the flowing style you would expect out of an improv situation

I watched this over a week ago and different plot points keep going through my mind - who was the bad guy? I think that I have reached the conclusion that they both were. Brendan made the statement more than once in the film "we are both alike" and I think that is what you have to realize. I'm going to watch it again in six months and see if I reach a different conclusion after letting in simmer for a while. Definitly worth viewing.

Don't buy this if you expect to watch soccer or football as it is called in the film. This is about the human beings involved in the tragedy. David Tennant does his usual excellent job of being the character and not calling attention to himself as the actor. The younger actors were often stiff and seemed more like players drafted to act rather than the other way around. It will be interesting to see where their careers are in ten years.

4.0 out of 5 stars Drama pure and simple, 4 Jan. 2012

I admint I bought this because of David Tennant, but the show drew me in to the point that I watched the entire series in one sitting. Excellent acting and the writer's developed believable characters. This is definitly for viewers who like a sincere portrait of the frailties of human beings and best of all you are left with the feeling that we can triumph
