Stephen King is not an author I am familiar with, in fact his genre of fiction does not appeal to me in the slightest. However, this book was recommended to me as I am attempting to write fiction and I must say, it has been quite helpful. His racy, matey style is a bit irritating (I am English, dammit!!!) but his down-to-earth no nonsense practicality is really useful. I found some of his pronouncements and directions very didactic and overly assertive making him appear inflexible and somewhat scornful of any method of expression other than his own. If one ignores the dogmatism, there is plenty of sound advice that can be cherry-picked from this book. His lively sense of humour is apparent and attractive. I still have a quarter of the book left to read, and am looking forward to hearing what more he has to say about the art. He's obviously a brave man who has suffered greatly since his accident. I wish him a full and speedy recovery.
