5.0 out of 5 stars Works perfectly., 8 April 2013

I tried a cheaper alternative to begin with. Unfortunately, that did not support all the keys on a non-US layout, but it was good enough to make me willing to try again, with the Perixx PERIPRO-401. I am really glad I did.

The Perixx really is plug and forget. It has worked perfectly with every PS/2 keyboard I have tried, including a personal favorite IBM Model M classic.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thoughtful, interesting and insightful collection of short essays., 28 Dec. 2012
I like the Pseudopod podcast. Actually, no, 'like' isn't the right word. How about 'enjoy'? No, that isn't right either. Appreciate? Yes, that'll do. I appreciate the podcast stories because more often than not, there is something about each tale that suggests, or perhaps forces, you to think about some deep and personal aspect of what makes you the person you are. It's not just the monsters described in sometimes visceral detail, but the recognition of the monsters within you that can really upset both your sense of peace, and your ability to delude yourself that the world is a safe, sane and happy place.

One of the more powerful channels for these insights are the short 'outro' talks by the host, Alasdair Stuart. Often, they start from some apparently unrelated perspective, but inexorably they home in on a key theme, inspired by the main podcast, relentlessly connecting with a meaning that affect you. These witty, clever, and crisp talks are textbook examples of analyzing ideas, no matter how frightening the process might be, and inspiring you to think about about profound truths and personal complacencies you otherwise take for granted.

As you can tell, I'm a big fan of Alasdair's outros, and often thought it would be a very special treat to have some of them collected together. And here, to my delight, is that much-wished-for collection.

You don't need to have heard the original podcast for each essay - although the identification details are provided if you wish. I think it helps to have heard at least a few of Alasdair's talks, because his style of verbal delivery is as delightful as the content itself. Once heard, you'll instantly hear his other other words using your inner ear. By listening to that inner voice, you'll be taking another step towards that personal insight, that exploration of the real you.

Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, fast-paced, easy read., 26 Dec. 2012

A collection of classic science-fiction themes (old and new) are brought together in a good read. Clear descriptions and imagery make it easy to visualize what is happening; the characters are easy to identify and relate to; the pace of events makes it easy to get 'swept up' by the action.

The story is brisk enough to be readable in one sitting, but rich enough to suggest a sequel or possibly other stories in the same settings. Some of the detail is fairly graphic, but remains consistent with the circumstances. Events are brought to a tidy conclusion that allows for a 'what happens next' sequel.

Overall: entertaining and satisfying.

4.0 out of 5 stars Important to be aware of, even for non-US readers, 9 Dec. 2012

Caveat: I am not a lawyer, and this is not legal advice.

The increasing importance of blogging, and other social media, raises the problem that more people are at risk of going beyond the boundaries of what is legally acceptable. The risk is complicated by the fact that social media channels do not reflect geographic and therefore jurisdictional boundaries.

Put in every day terms: blogging something you consider a simple expression of free speech might be considered offensive, undesirable, subversive, or worse, outside - or even inside - your home nation.

This book is a very clear and readable explanation of some of the potential legal risks you are exposed to, the moment you publish a word on the Internet. Necessarily, and understandably, the vast majority of the information contained in the book is US-specific, and you should not assume that it is wholly applicable to you or your circumstances. Nevertheless, this excellent book will help raise your awareness of the issues, and make you pause for thought (and get some firm legal advice) if you have any doubt about the legality of what you intend to publish on the Internet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Version 2 case does exactly what's wanted., 5 Aug. 2012

The new version 2 case fits the Nexus 7 perfectly: snug, but all the ports and buttons are accessible; the screen is not obscured at all. The magnetic clip for holding the case closed is not strong, but does the job. The magnetic sleep / wake switch works every time.
When I contacted MOFRED with a question about delivery schedule, they replied extremely quickly and very helpfully. My case also had the elastic loop for holding the stylus, both of which worked as described.
Overall, I'm very happy with this product - everything works as you'd hope, and the Nexus 7 is safe but quick and easy to access. Recommended.
