Fornication and rape in detail. Medieval background shaky. Plot weak. Acting wooden. Buy this only if you like watching someone else on the job.
Not what was advertised, yet Amazon will not refund postage. Be aware.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 29 Jan 2013

I bought this DVD because Sean Bean was featured in the leading role, and Bean normally has presence that shines from the screen. Not here, he doesn't get the chance.
This flick is not much more than a mess of mindless violence hung loosely on a weak plot about Muslim terrorists confronted by a lunatic security service. It takes place in a London apparently devoid of police officers. That said, there are some fine cameo roles; and perhaps with a little sharper writing and editing, not to forget better direction, might have been something more than a run of the mill B movie.
It is a good example of the weakness inherent in one man writing, producing and directing a film. The absence of clashing temperaments constricts vision, and blunts the edge that might have been honed by criticism, a weakness shared by other propaganda films.
It also suffers from the current fashion of male actors wearing a four day growth of beard, which I would have thought somewhat outre by now.
Teenagers will probably love it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Pitiful, 8 July 2012
This pathetic botch of C.S.Forester's novels should have earned all involved a sound flogging.
The script and dialogue are trite, lacking resemblance to life aboard a naval ship of that period.
The seamanship, or lack of it, is painful to watch.
Suitable only for the very easily pleased.

2.0 out of 5 stars Funny but sordid., 1 Mar 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I must admit that I laughed heartily at the first viewing of this, uh, comedy. The antics of Martin and Caine had me doubled up in my chair.

I did not laugh at the second screening; with the impact diluted it was only too apparent that this film is about two heartless liars persuading simple but kind women to fund non-existent charities. Never mind the poor victim, grab the cash, that is the whole plot. A pretty poor example for young viewers.

I enjoy a good crime caper as a rule, but once past the giggle-giggle stage this one is tasteless.

Charles Bronson as the public avenger.
Oh, for those days when we all hoped one honest man could reverse public decay, deal with the dirty little creeps undermining society, and somehow reestablish decency.
Sadly, the rottenness had already undermined law, justice, and honour.
Does that make you snigger?
Then this film, cast in the style of an old fashioned Western, is not for you.
It is for decent folk.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kostner and Eastwood hit the bullseye, 3 Feb 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: A Perfect World [1993] [DVD] (DVD)
In this finely crafted and touching movie Clint Eastwood wisely limits his own appearance to a cameo role and puts his energy into directing Kevin Costner in one of the finest performances of this actor's career to date, playing a simple minded escaped murderer landed with a boy hostage, (T.J. Lowther).
Eastwood's own quality shines through the performances of his two leading actors. Kostner's escaped convict is a decent enough man at heart, gentle by temperament, but a victim of the American justice system, coarsened by experience, and he plays the role with an authority reminiscent of Gary Cooper. Lowther's performance gives promise of much yet to come from this young man.
This movie contains almost everything essential for an effective drama, but in addition also explores the characters of the minor players, and because of this rises far above the usual cops and robbers drama. Henry Bumstead, as always, provides the unseen support that makes a movie work on screen.
You will want to view this one over an over again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bondage again, 3 Feb 2011
As silly as every other James Bond movie, with the exception that this time new Bondman Daniel Craig infuses the plot with an energy that has to be seen to be believed. This virtuoso performance is matched by Dame Judi Dench's splendidly sardonic 'M'. Mads Mikkelson gives a finely sinister performance as Le Chiffre, and the whole movie vibrates with energy, something long lacking in the usual limp-wristed productions that depended on technology for thrills. Technology there is in this one, and very amusing for anyone with the faintest notion of practical intelligence work. However this romp does not pretend to be anything other than good clean heterosexual fun.
Buy it and have an amusing evening.

5.0 out of 5 stars Flawless indeed, 3 Feb 2011
This review is from: Flawless [DVD] [2007] (DVD)
He's old and impudent, she is at a certain age but still a dish. They work in London Diamond, as cold and heartless an outfit as any you are ever likely to encounter, and they are both due for the sack.
Makes sense to pinch a few diamonds does it not? Well, then consider that the vault holds two tons of diamonds. Yep, two TONS. All this behind a monstrous slab of a steel door, security cameras, and one exit via personnel lift. Besides, how would you sell the bloody things once you'd pinched them?
Oh yes, one other little conundrum, why is the old feller bothering to try?
Twist after twist, lie after lie, trick after trick; all adding up to a flawless movie.

3.0 out of 5 stars Unpleasant people, 3 Feb 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Breach [DVD] (DVD)
This one is about trying to catch a spy within the ranks of the FBI. The suspected traitor is presented as a weird character who seems manages to combine sickening piety with avarice and an entire disregard for his duty. His hunters are as cold and selfish, obsessed with their task, filled with self justification, but come across as equally repellent persons within a gangster-like milieu of the FBI.
Perhaps true, possibly accurate in depiction, but an unpleasant movie.

This over contrived muddle might have been funny under another director. As it is, a slow, confused plot which the cast seems too tired to work at leaves the viewer wondering why it was ever attempted in the first place.
All the ingredients of good comedy are there, a cast of fine actors, a truly idiotic plot, splendid camera work, and yet it does not work. There is no energy in it.
One for the masochists.
