5.0 out of 5 stars Probably the best RPG you will ever play, 25 May 2016
The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt is my first adventure with Geralt and Co and so I went into this with a mixture of expectation from all the hype and trepidation due to not knowing anything about the Witcher series. All I can say is that this game is simply stunning! At times it reminded me of Game of Thrones, Skyrim and GTA V all rolled into one. What sets this game apart from most of it's competitors is simply the level of artistry and writing involved.

It appears now that Gaming is quickly becoming a new art form like television as a medium traditionally ruled by cinema in terms of telling a story. Where a film has 3 hrs plus sequels to tell a story this game allows you at least 50hrs to complete the main quest. I have already spent 3 days into this game and have not completed it so far. The richness of the story telling is deep and your actions appear to have real consequences which means I am already looking forward to replaying the game a different way when I'm done. This means that there is a possibility I will be getting 200hrs + out of one game which now costs just £21! On value for money alone - this hands down beats every competitor out of the water.

If you are like me and worried that the back stories are all new and yes - although it undoubtedly helps, it is not essential to play this game. In fact this game has become such breath of fresh air that it has made me want to play previous games and also read the books they are based on!

The open world(s) are also deeply rich and diverse. There are a few bugs here and there which is to be expected in a game (no game this scale could be perfect) and it's just as rewarding and impressive just to go out on your horse and explore. Added to this is a soundtrack that is simply amazing at capturing the world around you. Looting treasure and discovering new environments is a must in this game

The best thing about this game other than the richness of the story and environment, is however, the fighting and combat. I would advise to persevere at the higher levels of difficulty to really get into the richness of the combat fully. By developing Geralt in a number of different ways, your combat with the vast selection of monsters and foes really means you have to think and react accordingly. it can be punishing but also deeply rewarding and the feeling of defeating a foe several levels higher adds to the tension and scale of this game. Eventually, Geralt will become an ultimate badass and that it feels like a real achievement to become. Your understanding the oils and potions needed for battle is essential at the higher difficulties but finding them and making them is equally addictive. There are Witcher contracts which give different rewards compared to say Missing person contracts, main quests, secondary quests which makes the gameplay diverse. The pacing is also spot on with cinematic cut scenes for minor quests appear more important and silly comedic moments as well which just break the tension into fun arcade moments.

When you add all the aspects of this game and put them together - what is left is simply one of the best games I have ever played. I have been into gaming for over 30 years. I have always put a handful of games into 'masterpiece' territory (Half Life 1 and 2, Final Fantasy VII, Skyrim, Resident Evil 4, Last of Us, System Shock 2) now I can add another title to this list. I always thought Half Life 2 was the best game I have ever played but now it might be alongside The Witcher 3.

The hype is well deserved - this is a masterpiece and when it is all over and I have completed the DLC I will not be so sad as I am sure I will spend the whole year revisiting and in this game. Simply Stunning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Who would have a thought?, 12 Oct. 2015
Who would have thought a film about Jazz percussion would be so great? The premise alone is a surprise it even got a budget signed off! I caught this film on a flight to Tokyo, tired and disinterested from a 20 hour ride of caffeine fuelled sleeplessness. I needn't have bothered from the coffee though because this film caught my attention and didn't let off from the opening scene. Admittedly my love for music - particularly percussion helped, however this doesn't stop this film from being one of the most enthralling thrill rides that Hollywood has put out for a long time. The characters are perfect and the acting supurb. You care about the characters even the antagonist, in this case the wonderful J K Simmons who plays the driven and autocratic jazz composer \ tutor with authentic passion. The ending sequence itself got the hairs on the back of my neck upright. Its a film about pushing boundaries. Its about the human condition to be more than just the sum of our parts. It captures the great American art of jazz and explains it with a human story. It is quite simply awesome. Buy this now. Probably the best film I've seen come out of America since There Will Be Blood.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great action film that happens to be a Bond film, 8 May 2015
This review is from: Licence To Kill [DVD] (DVD)
With all the hype over Craig's performance of an all too clichéd stripped down Bond catching up with more superior Bourne films, it seems people and the media forget that Timothy Dalton did a better job 20 years earlier.

As a bond nerd more than a fan, having read most of the novels and those outside of the Fleming canon, I can't help but feel that Timothy Dalton's portrayal of the character is by far the best. When you realise that the classically trained actor turned down the role as a twenty year old after Connery's departure it appears cubby Brocolli saw the potential too.

This film was not successful. It faired poorly in the box office and was clearly influenced by the late action movies of die hard et al. However not withstanding this, it still remains, alongside Dalton's previous picture, as one of my favourites. Why? Let's start with the plot. A simple revenge story makes for emotive character arcs. The acting is top notch especially from Robert Davis who plays the film's villain Sanchez - a realistic villain of the time with America's war on drugs. The leading ladies are strong characters too. The stunts are stunning and the action well directed.

Do yourself a favour and watch bond from the books brought to the screen not seen really since from Russia with love all those years ago. Forget James Bond's mate James Bourne played by Craig. Dalton's where its at!

2.0 out of 5 stars pretentious. Nolan is the most over rated director out there!, 30 Mar. 2015
What happened to Hollywood? Style over content and comic bore adaptations that's what. This is the most stunningly shot and awesome looking pretentious load of cr*p I have ever seen. Not even a strong lead performance from a resurgent mcoughney can save this lazy plot holed riddled mess.

I have now lost hope of big budget studio cinema as a medium of art and importance culturally. The problem lies in the writing. Its as if all good writers have gone but then that's not surprising in a western culture that celebrates extroverts over introspection.

This film should have been called Deus Ex Machina being that analogies towards "they" and "love" referring to an archaic concept of pseudo Christian theology dominate the entire outcome of the story without any explanation only to a act as convenient plot developments.

And then there is matt Damon. The character is so pointless to the story that it feels like studio producers saw the dailies and decided the film needed a villain. Why scientists would spout the amount of irrational nonsence and lie to people for self serving intentions is beyond me. The real villains are the generations that destroyed our glorious planet. There seems to be no reference to modern culture today as to blame for the predicament the protagonists are in. Overall I found the movie depressing and pessimistic. Bigger questions should be being asked: does humanity deserve a second chance when they have made a mess of the entire planet?

And there is the context of technology. Despite being able to create artificial gravity worlds, interstellar travel, artificial intelligence with more sarcasm than bill Murray, simple crop rotation and genetically modified crops seems to be too scientific! It really is laughable.

Avoid. Watch 2001 for the deep introspection of existential concern. Watch Alien for human greed. Watch Gravity for sheer action and stunning visuals.
