4.0 out of 5 stars acres of chilldom; does what it says on the tin..., 8 Aug. 2009

3 CDs of chilled slightly ambient funkiness; fantastic value; I'd never heard of these guys but now I have I will look out for more (is there more?); this is the sort of stuff I just have playing all the time in the house/car, love that big phat relaxed cool sound they create throughout (everyone's clearly wearing Ray Bans); excellent stylish packaging too (where's the fun in downloads?)

check out the Mellotron near start of CD2 (or is it digitally created? no matter, it's a nostalgic sound)

CD2 is all you'll ever need for your chill medication

2.0 out of 5 stars De Palma dilutes Mamet with a bit of syrup, 2 Aug. 2009
Connery's accent is curiously confusing and the anachronistic and sometimes ridiculous score (synthesisers don't really work in a film depicting a historical era) can be a bit schmaltzy or over-dramatic - not one of Morricone's best. De Niro's acting's a bit ham although he's clearly enjoying himself - doing a Bob Hoskins impersonation!!! De Niro's not actually in the film very much. Everything feels a little staged especially the external scenes with rather wooden looking extras and the big sets look like... well, big sets! Chariots of Fire with lots of guns... and Andy Garcia in the background doing a very poor man's Pacino!! Somehow still manages to engage although it's a bit galling to see people crawling about after they've been shot 150 times. 2 stars for being moderately entertaining. A very simple gently paced film with a touch of Keystone about it too.

I heard Quarksparking on a chill out internet radio station so bought this expecting at least similar to what I'd heard which was in fact very enjoyable chilled relaxing souinds. Mr Shaw, the author of this bizarre work, must have been merely experimenting with no great objective in mind with the rest of this CD; all rather meaningless bumps and scratches I'm afraid

3.0 out of 5 stars not bad but the bad guys really aren't bad enough, 4 Jun. 2009
This review is from: The Sentinel [DVD] [2006] (DVD)
could do with more development of the would be assassins' characters, backgrounds, purpose and motivation; otherwise a nice way to spend an evening; no swearing, taut script, believable action, moderately edge of the seat thriller: the president lacks genuine gravitas though

once again, sacrifices a degree of character development of even the main players in favour of the primary theme of the president's peril

Eva is beautiful of course!

4.0 out of 5 stars blitzing Paris in the early hours!!, 19 Jan. 2009
Wow! This is utterly crazy! The guy races across Paris at goodness knows what speed at goodness knows what hour of the morning with no regard whatsoever for red lights, traffic or pedestrians (or pigeons!)

Stunning to watch. Definitely not a Merc 450 6.9 which was only ever available with automatic transmission as far as I know, in keeping with its luxury motoring raison d'etre - listen to the manual gear change, people! (Unless of course the engine sound has been dubbed; who knows...)

Otherwise the car could have been any number of zippy Italian mid-engined V8s

Correction: it seems to be the general consensus that the sound was Lelouch's own Ferrari 275 GTB4, a V12 engined vehicle - if I make any claim to petrol-headedness I should have recognised it was not a V8 sound!

4.0 out of 5 stars lie down and ride the scree into the cage of lifeless packaging, 15 Jan. 2009

I listened to this with the biggest smile I've had on my face for a long time and that's because there's something about these guys which suggests very strongly that they don't take themselves too seriously and yet they're tremendous musicians to pull this one off

despite a slightly anodyne 'west coast' feel (like some of the guitar too), vocals have a certain grating edge not unlike Mr Gabriel; they're much more exposed than Gabriel's on the original but don't suffer for that

excellent use of live strings section and brass throughout too

love the refreshing female vocals in the Lamia (aren't the Lamia female anyway? of Greek mythological origin or some such, I believe...) and the choral work in Silent Sorrow is simply sublime and you will simply laugh out loud when you hear the Scree; what a delight!

only very minor gripe is in the Slipperman - the accordion is a bit too tongue in cheek for me I'm afraid but I can still see the funny side (accordion strangely works rather well in some other places though) and there's a slight notational anomaly at the end of bar 12 of the initial vocal line which seems a bit lazy to be honest

overall, they've taken a much much lighter approach to the production - possibly a benefit of vastly superior recording technology - than the original but the whole thing still carries weight and honesty; they obviously had a ball putting this lot together

and lastly, 'It' sounds so happy! SMILE!!

31 08 12 edit: can anyone please account for the staggeringly eye-watering price being asked for this item?

4.0 out of 5 stars splendid rendition of an ultimately moving tale, 25 Dec. 2008
absolutely agree with previous reviewer (although I haven't read the book); excellent portrayal by Ms Anderson in a role which is, at once understated and yet also imperious; not enough good roles for women and stories about women in cinema - this goes some way to redressing the balance in my opinion; bravo Ms Anderson!

5.0 out of 5 stars romantic homage, 14 Nov. 2008

this soundtrack contains delicacy, grandeur, sentiment, anger, warmth, sadness...

one of it's main themes is beautifully reminiscent of themes from Rachmaninov's piano concerti

certainly deserved its Golden Globe

Elegy for Dunkirk is a wonderfully crafted illustration of the weariness of battle and its painful aftermath (tremendous scene in the film)

there are several very strong themes which stand repetition and variation extremely well and I particularly enjoyed the typewriter motif

this is a film score of the highest quality, bravo!
