5.0 out of 5 stars romantic homage, 14 Nov 2008

this soundtrack contains delicacy, grandeur, sentiment, anger, warmth, sadness...

one of it's main themes is beautifully reminiscent of themes from Rachmaninov's piano concerti

certainly deserved its Golden Globe

Elegy for Dunkirk is a wonderfully crafted illustration of the weariness of battle and its painful aftermath (tremendous scene in the film)

there are several very strong themes which stand repetition and variation extremely well and I particularly enjoyed the typewriter motif

this is a film score of the highest quality, bravo!

What a sweet, sweet film! Absolutely delicious music (bravo! to the composer), gorgeous yet restrained cinematography and a simple heartfelt & inspirational "biographical" screenplay. Box of tissues recommended.

Mr Becker has created a world's first; a musical flatline. How can he feel remotely satisfied with this unimportant list of dreary outtakes?

Shame on you, Sir! Mr B is, in my opinion, one of the greatest musicians within the genre of rock/jazz/whatever-field-he-exactly-occupies since the late sixties.

I look forward to hearing how he intends to restore his reputation with his next offering because this Circus Money thing (what a cynical title if ever there was one!) tells no new listener anything useful about his true talents.

at last it's available at a reasonable price on CD and I'm so glad as I've not heard my vinyl copy (badly distorted from a million plays on dodgy decks) for many years

maybe it's not the most creative leading edge jazz funk (bass sometimes leaves a bit to be desired perhaps) but if you like ludicrously steamy strings awash with just the right amount of reverb, then you've picked the right sounds with this delightfully tempered piece of work

highlights for me are the gorgeous string section and Holdsworth's nicely restrained guitar

sit back and relax with a cool drink at your fingers and slip into a warm, phat frame of mind

5.0 out of 5 stars sheer delight for a deeply engrossed fan, 1 Aug 2008

I first read LotRs in 1975 and have been totally absorbed in Tolkien's related writings ever since to the most excessive level.

These films do the greatest honour to a fabulous mythical history. No more need be said of them which has not already been said but a word or two of the appendices; absolutely gigantic!!! It is barely conceivable just how enormous these deeply informative additional films are.

Highlights for me: the three films containing erudite contributions about the development of Tolkien's ideas and their wonderful incorporation into his books and the startlingly exhaustive study of the creation of the soundtrack, surely a first...

All in all, a titanic achievement

3.0 out of 5 stars good family entertainment, 31 July 2008
This review is from: Firewall [DVD] [2006] (DVD)
I think this is a very good family thriller although one might argue it's possibly a little violent for a 12 certificate. Still, it'll keep you on the edge of your seat. Young (?) Harrison may seem a tiny bit out of place in some of the (very few) action sequences but it's all just about believable and keeps the story going.

It's not a great film but I really don't think it deserves the heavy and elaborate criticisms noted elsewhere. It's admittedly formulaic but parents can feel comfortable watching it with their kids (or letting them watch it).

... improbable, original, surprising...

I watched this for the first time recently as it's been previously hard to get hold of and was impressed by this thespian tour de force. Olivier is brutishly cynical and snobbish conveying a darker xenophobic side of the monied aristocracy perhaps. Caine, ever the underdog but giving as good as he gets as the suave good-time boy.

An object lesson in the art of the classic two-hander genre.

Lengthy luvvie and informative monologue by the author accompanies this fascinating screen adaptation of a marvellous play

Fast, sharp, witty, self important, surprising, funny, adult, intelligent, unusual.

Life in a sports channel studio never looked so... well, what on earth would it look like? I've absolutely no idea. Extraordinary location for this superlative "soap".

Won't get aired in UK or released on region 2 coz it's now too old and it's got too many shots of the WTC so get yourself a multi region player.

Aaron Sorkin is like David Mamet except a bit quicker... and funnier

Delicate, heavy, loud, soft, articulate, simple, complex, straightforward, melodic, chromatic, bombastic, virtuosic (!), fast, true jazz-rock fusion with slight emphasis on the rock: a timely and short-lived gelling of fabulously indulgent musical talent. Unique i.e. where on earth have you heard anything like this? Extremely mature approach to music. Genius.

Al is venomous and spits a lot. This is the best introduction to RickIII I can imagine. Wonderful insight into the thesp's world (of which I profess limited knowledge) Intense
