In the years of movie-going i have endured, every year there is one film that gets damned by the critics and film goers alike (Battlefield Earth, The Avengers), ans i have always found them rather endearing.

The dreadful scripts, the hammy acting and the non-existent narrative all make a bad movie....somewhat appealing.

So I was sadistically looking forward to this movie. And despite the fact I found the movie the funniest i've seen in a while (the word bender for example), it's truly a monstrosity of a turkey.

Because i've never seen the animated series it's based on, I thought it was because of this, but as an hour felt like a week, it was the dire pacing and story Shyalaman has chucked at the screen.

I have never seen a director fall from such spectacular grace, like this man has.

Ten years ago, his films were sometihng that would awe-inspire the masses, now, he has made himself a laughing stock.

The film makes no sense at all, and we are forced to watch some of the worst acting and badly choreographed fight scenes ever to grace such a high budgeted event movie.

The effects are okay, but effects do not make a movie, and going from one set piece to another, watching fire fight ice and wind, isn't entertaining.

Sutherland and Phillips take time out between the young gun movies, and make this pleasant little buddy film.

Sutherland plays Buster, with a moustache of jealousy. He is on vacation, but is doing his own thing. When a diamond heist goes wrong, Phillips' brother is killed and his beloved spear is stolen.

so they team up and try to take down the bad guys...formulaic stuff, but thanks to the chemistry of the leads, it's a little above your usual action movie.

Things are the same though. They dislike each other at first, get to know each other, fall out a bit, and then become best mates at the end.

It's the kind of movie, that won't trouble the grey matter, the set pieces are at regular intervals, and there is a little racism on board for good measure.

It's a shame it was released in a year when there were so many high profile sequels and franchise movies, if this was released a little later in the year, it might have been more recognised.

Still forgettable fun though.

In Los Angeles, a gang of armed thieves is hitting serious targets - major banks, vaults, and armoured cars.

These thieves are led by arch-criminal Neal MacAuley. One of their operations, an armoured- car robbery, goes bad and the armoured-car guards are murdered by the gunmen - putting LAPD homicide detective Vince Hanna on the trail of the thieves.

Hanna knows it will take a lot to bring these dangerous, armed thieves down, and it will end in a horrifying gun battle when the thieves try to rob a major federal bank....

not only was this the most exciting thing to happen in a movie in 1995, this in my opinion, is the last greatest work these two have ever done.

De Niro went for more comedy, family drama and Horror.

Pacino went the way of growing his hair really big and shouting a lot very loud.

They tried to capture the magic thirteen years later, but righteous kill died a death, and just goes to show how much their stars have fell for choosing such atrocious movies to be in.

Back to this film though, and as well as Pacino, De Niro, Kilemr and a star studded cast, Los Angeles has never been so good in a movie before, Mann uses the city to it's fullest in almost every scene, and although the movie is a little nineties now, it still has that oh so slick almost space age look about it, which oozes class.

Mann has made a class act in narration, storytelling and editing, and the 170 minute runtime doesn't seem that long, thanks to the amazing set piece in the middle.

The film does feel like a two part story, with the robbery in the middle just to give you a little break from all the character driven connotations and sub-plots.

So we have part one: The set up rest for the robbery Part two: the aftermath

And the sub-plots are amazingly detailed. From Hannas troubled busy life to Macauleys troubled lonely life, we are not spared a moment to catch our breath as the film is filed with so much.

The much talked about scene involving the two is good, but there are so many better scenes in the film.

The night vision scene, probably the most intense thing i have seen in the whole film, but thats the standard of the acting and the editing.

Pacino does shout a lot, and becomes a bit annoying at times, and De Niro does that thing where he repeats a certain line a few times for dramatic effect, but apart from those two minor gripes, the film is flawless.

So after nearly thirty years, we get the long awaited sequel to one of the biggest cult films of all times.

In 1989, a CGI Jeff Bridges explains the plot of the first film to a boy using lots of merchandise. CGI Jeff goes out and never comes back.

Fast forward a few years and that little boy is Flynns son and he likes to hack his own company now and again, much to the ilk of Cillian Murphy and that bloke from season 7 of '24'.

But Alan Bradley loves this, maybe due to the fact he's got a part in the most anticipated film of the year, or the fact that Flynn said exactly the same line his dad did when breaking in the same door his dad did in the first Tron.

Bradley goes round to Flynns flat, who also is a wiz on a bike (this will come important later in the film) and explains a little twist about sleeping with pagers and his dads arcade.

So Flynn goes there and gets transferred to the grid, and finds his dad is literally god, and David Bowie working at the end of line club....

I hated the first Tron movie with a passion. I first endured it two years ago, and because of the hype of this one, i decided to see if it was because i was in a weird mood or something. No, it's because i just didn't like the film and found it boring.

So to be fair, I wasn't looking forward to this. Its an amazing film though. Storywise, it's not the best, but for pure psychedelic entertainment, it's the one of the best mind-***ks I have ever seen in a mainstream family film.

The film is basically about god looking at his creation from afar (Flynn) and seeing how impure it has become (as in earth).

it has a very religious feel to it, the good are shrouded in white, and the evil red (heaven and hell) and the agnostic in yellow. there are a few exceptions (Beau garrett, Michael Sheen) but that is the main jist.

But it doesn't hinder the film one bit, as it's all about the spectacle, and the depth of field and the world of the grid is the one of the most impressive things i have ever seen in 3-D.

Bridges is amazing in this film, he's basically the dude, and he knows he's the best thing in this. The effects are amazing, they are so fluid, that they just seem so real.

The music is amazing too, as if it was a character itself in the film.

If you've been waiting for this film, unlike me, it's a must.

Verified Purchase(What is this?)
In 2019, Lincoln Six Echo and Jordan Two Delta are best friends in a repressive and intriguing society, where everybody expects to win the lottery.

The prize is to move to a paradisaical island outside the domes that protect the dwellers against the contaminated environment.

Jordan wins the lottery, and Lincoln accidentally finds the scary truth behind the Utopian award: they are clones, generated to provide replacement organs and parts to the owners of insurance policy......

Michael Bays only real flop, is ironic in many ways, mostly because this is one of the best films he has ever made. along with 'The Rock', this actually has a feasible story and narrative (even though it's heavily borrowed from Logan's run), and the traditional big bangs and flashy editing do not hinder the film (hello Transformers).

The whole film is edited in the bay fashion, and its exciting from start to finish. The cast for a film of this genre, is quite classy, with the exception of Johansson, who goes to show that she is just a pretty face and nothing more.

McGregor is as reliable as ever, but struggles with a dodgy accent, and thanks to Star Wars, he manages to hold a big budget movie on his own.

As expected, Bay delivers some spectacular set pieces, the best being the freeway chase, it's beautiful to look at, and fluid in a way that would make John Woo proud.

There are plot holes, but really, when you have one of the most freshest and entertaining summer films released in 2005 (I personally think it failed because of the amount of familiar movies released that year, Batman, War of the worlds, Charlie and the chocolate factory), it doesn't matter, because this is a summer movie and guilty pleasure of the highest order.

Mob boss Primo Sparazza has taken out a hefty contract on Buddy "Aces" Israel - a sleazy magician who has agreed to turn state's evidence against the Vegas mob.

The FBI, sensing a chance to use this small-time con to bring down big-target Sparazza, places Aces into protective custody-under the supervision of two agents dispatched to Aces' Lake Tahoe hideout.

When word of the price on Aces' head spreads into the community of ex-cons and cons-to- be, it entices bounty hunters, thugs-for-hire, smoking' hot vixens and double-crossing mobsters to join in the hunt.

With all eyes on Tahoe, this rogues' gallery collides in a comic race to hit the jackpot and rub out Aces....

I was really looking forward to this movie, i mean it was directed by the guy who made the amazing Narc, and starred an impressive cast. And most of all, the trailer was a hoot and made it look like a treat.

This is the sole reason why i don't trust trailers anymore. Sure the cast are good, and there are some good set pieces, but if there isn't a good story and script to hold it together, whats the point of it all.

This is basically gun porn for the masses, and it ends up like watching a video game in progress. The groups in the film could be classed as a level in the game and we watch and wait to see how they progress.

It's the same throughout the whole film, with a few 'clever' lines threw in, which are not very clever and add nothing to the film itself.

Thank goodness for Piven, who actually raises this from actual trash and makes his few scenes a joy to watch.

The rest of the film is pure piffle, and not very good.

Peyton Westlake is a scientist who has discovered a way to produce synthetic skin.

This could revolutionise skin grafting, except for one minor glitch; the synthetic skin degrades after 100 minutes of exposure to light.

When gangsters attack Peyton, he is horrifically burnt, and assumed dead.

In his quest for revenge, Peyton, aka the Darkman, is able to take on the appearance of anyone (using the synthetic skin,) but he's only got 100 minutes per disguise.....

Darkman is a lovely hidden gem of a movie, released here in the UK at the end of 1990, it hardly made a ripple at the box office, but there was something about the poster that made me want to see the film.

I was very young when i first saw it, so i never got any of the nods to Raimi and his other films and friends, it was just a movie about a disfigured man who was after Dr. Giggles.

Seeing it twenty years later, and the film is still very fresh and could stand up to most superhero films that are made nowadays (it didn't have much competition then, Matt Salinger as Captain America came out around the same time).

Neeson is fantastic as the titular character and adds depth to the lost soul looking for redemption. as said before, the story narration and script are wonderful, and it has that little Raimi touch, which makes it stand from the crowd.

Compared to a lot of hero movies made today, Wolverine, Iron Man 2, this still pretty much holds it's own against them, as it really has characters you can truly root for, Stark was pretty much an ass in the second movie, and Logan needed to chill out a little.

Drake is pretty cool as Durant, stealing the film whenever he's in it.

it may not be as technically brilliant as movies made today, but the helicopter set piece is as impressive today as it was when i first saw it on old trusty VHS.

A group of insomniac volunteer research subjects travel to a massive old mansion to undergo testing for what they believe to be insomnia studies.

What they do not know is that the professor in charge is actually conducting experiments on human fear.

As the days and nights pass, the group slowly begins to learn the terrifying secret behind the house's former owner.

They soon realise that the house is pure evil, and they must battle a terrifying spirit to escape the house of nightmares......

In a year bereft of extremely bad summer movies (phantom menace, wild wild west, entrapment), there is no surprise that this carried on the trend of bad releases.

Directed by a man who made one good movie (speed) and then some truly abysmal summer fodder, De Bont proves to be a one trick pony and does himself no favours with this.

This is nothing more than an effects showcase, and admittedly, while the effects and set design are truly stunning, it does nothing for the fact that the re-make is unnecessary and the casting is bad and the script is the worst of the year.

Neeson looks embarrassed (he must have hated 1999, no wonder he wanted to retire), Wilson looks bemused. The only person who comes out of this relatively unscathed is Zeta-Jones, but this is probably because she was at the beginning of a relationship with one of the most powerful men in the business, and her previous two films were solid performers at the box office.

The film isn't scary in the slightest, not even for a haunted house movie, and it has no sense of dread or emotion at all.

See for the sole reason of De Bonts career at it's worse, and he directed Speed 2...

Dirty Harry is back and he's gone so far undercover he has changed his name to Nick.

His mate gets killed at the scene of a crime, and so this leaves Nick solo for a scene. Enter Charlie Sheen who is a rich kid who doesn't want help from his dad.

They both go after Raul Julia because they could foresee that he was going to be in streetfighter and wanted to warn him.

cue much gun play, pyrotechnics and some very bad acting.

But it's a blast all the way. This is Eastwood's worst directing gig, but i feel he did this so he could make one of his beloved projects.

The story is non-existent, some of the acting is awfully bad (it's not just a job, its a ***** ADVENTURE!!), and there are some gaping plot holes, but they really don't make fun action movies like this anymore.

the one liners come thick and fast, the set pieces for the time, are amazing and the fact that there is only one scene with CGI really shows.

So it's your basic buddy cop formula movie, nothing else, but it's fun, and Eastwood is as good as ever. Sheen is okay but remains with one look and one monotone voice throughout.

So to elaborate, it's been done a thousand times before, it's predictable, and the story stinks due to poor narration and editing.

But it's still a good action film, with some inventive use of explosions and xander Berkeley.

plus it's the best Clint Eastwood movie featuring Eastwood being sexually abused.

a real treat..

1.0 out of 5 stars Raimi is slowly tarnishing a wonderful career....., 17 Jun. 2015
The law of averages should teach us now that remakes, especially ones of much loved horror movies, rarely work, and once again this is no exception.

The first movie was groundbreaking for many a reason. In the US, it was a PG, and it had the inclusion of sniping at the Reagan era, and the fact that TV and home entertainment was taking over the nuclear family household, hence Carol-Ann literally being taken over by the TV.

The remake has nothing like that in its narrative to offer, other than a nod to gadgets and reality TV, it's just another cash in on a well known name with very little character development, favouring the effects heavy final act.

If it wasn't for Rockwells performance, this would be unwatchable, his recently unemployed Eric is the soul of the film, and he's as good as ever, a performance that doesn't belong in hokey rubbish like this.

Jared Harris provides the High Concept element of the film, and the 3D is basically ripping off Joe Dantes The Hole from 2010.

With remakes like this, Raimi is continuing to detach himself from the exciting auteur that he was in the eighties and nineties, and slowly becoming just another greedy cog in the Hollywood cash machine.

One to avoid.
