Collected Poems
Collected Poems
by Edgar Bowers
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars a great poet, 28 Dec. 2009
This review is from: Collected Poems (Paperback)
Edgar Bowers' Collected poems are extremely elegant, refined in thought and manner, definitely worth reading! Edgar Bowers (1924-2000) was a great teacher of English American literature at Santa Barbara / University of California, a witty story teller and conversationist, a lover of classical music, mostly Haydn and Mozart, he was a gentleman in his life, very humane and compassionate toward "the poor suffering mankind", but as far as poetry is concerned he was first of all a true poet, who knew how to express his experience of life and contemporary history, war and peace, love and friendship, his concern for fine arts and good poetry in our postmodern time. Underrated as "oldfashioned" or misunderstood as "formalist", he was in fact a true supporter of the tradition of good poetry and practiced the noble art of creating well written verses. He was not "formalist" for the only sake of form! He wanted meaning and wisdom! And so he gave us his demanding and elegant work! Only 2 years after he published these moving Collected Poems, he died by a lymphoma in his flat of San Francisco; he was not yet 76. Unconscious, near to the coma, his last words were: "I want more ... of everything".

5.0 out of 5 stars one of my first gay emotion, 21 April 2004
a wonderful movie as simple and magic as the joy of first love and intense as the discovery of oneself. well balanced, very romantic and very elegant, amusing and moving, tender, never melodramatic.
