5.0 out of 5 stars Clever, 5 Dec 2013

One of the cleverest stories in Japanese cinema. Nakadai's performance is superb - he dominates the film from his first frame, having a quiet command that even Mifune would find hard to better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top notch, 5 Dec 2013

The class of Toshiro Mifune shines through this excellent tale. The treatment is almost as good as Kurosawa and builds slowly to an inevitable and superb climax.

A good piece of kit for the price. Light but reasonably stable with ability to add weight to column to improve it. Worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great one-liners, 19 July 2009
This review is from: True Confessions [DVD] (DVD)
Joan Didion, who co-wrote the screenplay with her husband, John Gregory Dunne, also wrote one of the best ever collections of American essays - Slouching Towards Bethlehem, with the fabulous Some Dreamers of the Golden Dream starkly exposing the hollowness in aspects of American society. True Confessions comes close to capturing the same issues, even though it is based on Dunne's novel.

Great acting from De Niro, Duvall, Durning and others keeps the movie taut till the end. Dan Hedeya, although not given headline billing, excells adding a salacious edge and he is given some great on-liners that linger long after the film is over. In fact, the script is littered with great quips and dialogue.

A 1981 film that is well worth watching.

5.0 out of 5 stars Iconic 70s Movie, 19 July 2009
This review is from: Electra Glide In Blue [DVD] (DVD)
Worth it for the opening titles alone which have never been surpassed for the integration of the music with freeze frames. The title sequence of CHiPS (1977)would probably never have happened had EGiB not existed !

The DVD has the bonus of the trailer which captures much of the film's essence and an interesting interview with the director, James William Guercio. What a pity he made nothing else.

There are strong performances from Robert Blake and the best portrayer of American "trailer trash" of his generation, Billy "Green" Bush, who also starred in Bob Rafelson's 5 Easy Pieces (1970). Add to that, the fantastic setting and reasonable plot and you have an enduring classic from the golden age of American cinema - the Seventies.
