5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome HJ LIM!!!!, 27 July 2012

In response to a. Zimmerman:
I am in total disagreement with you. I think that the interpretations of HJ Lim, are actually stimulant with a new vision of the music of Beethoven. To those who only like the interpretations in the classic way, there are dozens of versions on the market.

5.0 out of 5 stars Karajan's EROICA from 1963, 13 July 2012
The high point of Karajan's achievement as a Beethoven interpreter, a reading of tremendous sweep and drama, playing of blinding virtuosity and strength. With great sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Handel, 10 May 2012
This Oratorio by Handel is doubtlessly one of his best works, of extraordinary beauty from beginning to end. It's a fascinating experience to listen to it complete, until reaching a state of ecstasy when the choruses sing "Sing Unto God" and his divine "Hallelujah-Amen."

Johannes Somary's interpretation is inspired, brilliant, maintaining a powerful dynamic throughout the score. The soloists' work is SUPERB!

Vanguard's sound is excellent; maybe the treble could be lowered a bit on your amplifier.

100% recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A GENIUS OF COUNTERPOINT, 2 May 2012
This review is from: Symphonies 2 & 3 (Audio CD)
It is difficult to understand as a work of both artistic as well as being extremely nice value, so little performed. The second Symphony of Ives, is a work full of optimism and ideas very well achieved with reference to oppose concepts. The score of this Symphony, shows us the genius of Charles Ives in the contrapuntal art.

1.0 out of 5 stars THE MOTHER OF ALL THE DISAPPOINTMENTS, 18 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
That terrible disappointment this first installment on Blu-Ray of the magnificent opera by Richard Strauss "Die Frau Ohne Schatten".

A little history of how it went by entering in this work, those who want only the opinion of this Blu-Ray version, skip the next paragraph.

It is an opera that I love for many years back when I buy my first Wolfgang Sawallisch audio version, with Birgit Nilsson and Dietrich Fischer Dieskau, the hurt of this "live" version is that it has a poor audio. Therefore purchase Giuseppe Sinopoli for Teldec, it was then where I could enjoy all the magnificence of this monumental work, both the music of Strauss as the drama of Hugo von Hofmannsthal, to date this is the version that I would have the first option, however you have some cuts. As my interest for the work was great buy the Sir Georg Solti (uncut version) audio version, great! With the arrival of new vision systems not endurance the temptation to see the opera and buy the Solti DVD version, a genuine wonder!

The staging of Christof Loy, is more disappointing that you can imagine. Simply all the opera develops as if the singers were in a recording studio, therefore there is no scenery of any kind, destroying all the purposes of the drama of Hugo von Hofmannsthal, all with neckties and portfolios point. That hurts... hope that very soon there is another installment in Blu-Ray of this work. The only pleasure is the see and hear Anne Schwanewilms, that shame that in this production she not can develop their potential great actress that has, evidenced in the Rosenkavalier in Blu-Ray.

At the moment I would recommend. If you want to see the opera: Solti on DVD (Decca), to only hear Sinopoli (Teldec).

Christof Loy, go and take a shower and look for a new job.

Bliss - Colour Symphony/Adam Zero
Bliss - Colour Symphony/Adam Zero

5.0 out of 5 stars The colours of Sir Arthur Bliss, 9 Dec 2011
Sir Arthur Bliss one of the foremost British composers of his generation is currently very forgotten unfairly. It is a composer of great talent and good taste, follower of the school of his illustrious predecessor Sir Edward Elgar. "A Colour Symphony" is in four movements, where each represents a color: purple, red, blue and green, where Bliss expresses his impressions of the personal connotations that each of these colors represent for him, in the booklet of the album are the meanings for each color to Bliss. Musically speaking the work it is of indisputable beauty, a score for large Orchestra, where the melodies mingle in memories of the old and rich English tradition with early 20th century modernist ideas. The Ballet Adam Zero is enjoyable from start to finish, where Bliss very intelligently used his solid knowledge of orquetación.
The direction of David Lloyd, is very clean and active, backed by a good Orchestra.

Strongly recommended.

Beethoven: Fidelio

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite version of Beethoven's Fidelio, 9 Dec 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Beethoven: Fidelio (Audio CD)
This version of Fidelio, is made to my measure, find it higher even than the famous and award-winning performances of Otto Klemperer (EMI) and the Leonard Bernstein (DGG).
The execution of Lorin Maazel it has everything, energy, forcefulness, musicality, inspiration... and a cast of extraordinary level especially the Leonora of Birgit Nilsson and Kurt Bohme's Rocco are superb. (Recitative) melodramas, are simply beautiful, where we can appreciate the noble German language. How it tears us the heart the first sentence of the second Act, "Gott!" "welch Dunkel hier!" (God!) (What dark is here!), Beethoven would be referring to his deafness?

The work of the choir is outstanding, the director is none other than the famous Wilhelm Pitz! And apotheosis comes in the final chorus is a hymn to freedom where all beethovenianas forces come together, they under the great conception of Maazel, which leaves us completely satisfied.
