Digging to China [DVD] [1998] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]
Digging to China [DVD] [1998] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]

5.0 out of 5 stars Digging to china, 9 Nov. 2008

A bittersweet but heartwarming tale of two loners who form a bond born from isolation. Harriet is a 10yr old who lives in a hotel with her sister and alcoholic mother but dreams of escaping. Ricki is the son of one of her guests but because 'he was born blue' has a degree of mental retardation. The two become firm friends against the wishes of both their families leading to 'drastic' measures being taken.
There are scenes to make you laugh and those to make you cry. A very enjoyable movie that I will be recommending to people I know left, right and centre.

5.0 out of 5 stars serving with pride, 29 Oct. 2008

Yes, this is another movie about how army regulations banning gays and lesbians from serving. Yes, this is another TRUE story about the being a lesbian in the armed forces. No, that does not make it pointless, done before and not worth watching.
'Serving in Silence' is a rather old movie now but it is amazing how little progress has been made in the 'dont ask, dont tell' decree held by the US armed forces.
Glenn Close is brilliant as Magarethe Cammermeyer, the highest ranked women to be thrown out of the army for being homosexual. Her courage, determination and belief in equality meant she didn't take it lying down which as you can imagine had many consequences back in the 80's (not that it wouldn't even now but probably less so!).
A very moving film which I have watched several times over due to its strong but subtle message, and don't ask me how they did it but there are also some funny/witty scenes thrown in for good measure.

4.0 out of 5 stars great story, 28 Oct. 2008
This review is from: The Bank Job [DVD] (DVD)
The Bank Job works for several reasons;
1 - the good ol fashion British humour and wit
2 - the fact it is based on a true story
3 - the sheer joy in seeing the powers that be of the world being outplayed at their own game

As I said, based on a true story the movie revolves around the robbery of a branch of Lloyds in the early 70's. There are many reasons a movie was made of this particular heist but prob the most was the fact it was set in motion by the secret service! Needless to say things didn't quite go as planned and the robbers ended up with a lot more than they bargained for with the cops after them for the actual crime, the service after them for the contents of one lockbox and the mob for the contents of that and other boxes!

A very entertaining movie of an event some people may remember.

5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant, 28 Oct. 2008
This review is from: Midnight Man [DVD] (DVD)
This is what we pay tv licences for! Not sure how I managed to miss seeing this on tele but am certainly glad I took a chance and rented it out.
James Nesbitt's acting is first class and I really started to empathise and get attached to his character with all his annoying habits.
The storyline is also very relevant to todays culture of fear, blame and hatred.
Without giving too much away 'The Midnight Man' is about Max, a washed out reporter who is afraid of leaving his house during daylight hours. He remains tied to the world of journalism by rumaging through (famous) peoples rubbish for secrets. One day he stumbles across a piece of paper which holds clues to the death of a local British man of Iranian origin. He feels there is a greater conspiracy around the death and begins to investigate with deadly consequences.

The Broken Window: Lincoln Rhyme Book 8
The Broken Window: Lincoln Rhyme Book 8
by Jeffery Deaver
Edition: Hardcover

4.0 out of 5 stars big brother is watching you, 10 Oct. 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The latest installment in the Lincoln Rhyme series, 'The Broken Window' is a case a little closer to home in that it involves a close relation being the main (if not only suspect) in a murder.
Rhyme quickly deduces that this is the work of a master criminal who's MO includes making sure he has a fall guy set up. 'The Broken Window' is fascinating in terms of the realism of the world it describes, with the whole big brother fear brought to the forefront. The tendency to this means there is less high octane, heart pounding tension of the previous books in the series.

Definitely worth reading for hardcore fans or first timers alike though I suggest the later start with the older books first for some background. At the very least I suggest reading (re-reading if you have already) the previous book in the series as it is heavily referenced in this story. I found myself struggling to remember the details of the last plot which made certain aspects of the book less interesting.

3.0 out of 5 stars 2.5 stars, 14 Aug. 2008
This review is from: Days Of Glory [2006] [DVD] (DVD)
This movie lives somewhere in the land of 'bad' to 'ok'. A topic that could have been turned into such a powerful movie but falls rather flat in its portrayal.
'Days of Glory' is about the many Muslims from French colonies in Africa joined the fight to liberate France during WW2 only to be treated as second class 'citizens'.
It's a rather slow paced movie with no real climax to speak of and I felt my interest start to wane towards the end.
Not particularly worth watching, even for movie buffs. There is much better material out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars 10 stars!, 30 July 2008
The wider world is being deprived of a brilliant movie by this only being available as a region 1 dvd. Based on a true story and largely using actual court transcripts 'Find me guilty' follows the nearly 2yr long trial of 20 'mobsters' in the 80's.
It somehow manages to be engaging, humorous and touching even though technically the subject matter is anything but. Vin Diesel outdoes himself in the title role. I have never thought twice about his acting skills but this movie has certainly made me sit up and take notice. He needs to stop selling himself short and go for more 'serious' stuff.
A movie well worth your time especially if you like courtroom drama. Not your average gang/mob movie.

The Room Of Lost Things

3.0 out of 5 stars total let down, 28 July 2008
I was looking forward to this book having read (and enjoyed) several of Ms Duffy's previous novels. Then there was the added incentive of it having been shortlisted for awards. What a disappointment it turned out to be. I'm rather surprised I actually stuck it out till the end as the first half of the book seems to move along aimlessly detailing the day-to-day lives of several people. It's like the written version of 'Lost in translation' where the story moves along in no particular direction. There is no build up to any sort of climax and you are left wondering what the point of the tale was.
The last half-ish of the book is more interesting (not brilliant but certainly better than the first bit) and I did enjoy reading it.

I don't think I'll be recommending this to anybody, especially first time Stella Duffy readers.

4.0 out of 5 stars interesting, 18 July 2008
This review is from: Sommersby [DVD] [1993] (DVD)
A rather old movie at this point but enjoyable all the same. Especially for those of us who are fans of either/both of the main actors. No one in particular steals the show in what turns out to be an average-slight above average movie but they all put in decent performances.
Richard Gere plays Jack Sommersby who returns home after 6yrs. This is after time spent in jail following the civil war. Jodie Foster is his wife who had started to move on and was even talking of marrying one of the other townsmen when her hubby shows up. Although Jack seems to know a fair deal about the town and the people in it there are certain things that make people question whether he really is Jack Sommersby. This is all forgotten until he is arrested for commiting murder and the only way to get off is to prove he isn't Jack Sommersby! Things are not always this simple though and thus begins the true drama.

Good movie.. provides a decent amount of entertainment for a quiet evening in but don't expect anything mind blowing.

Patience and Sarah
Patience and Sarah

Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars lesbian classic, 18 July 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Patience and Sarah (Paperback)
Patience and Sarah was written many a year ago and was set in a times even further back - the 19th century to be exact! It is based on the real relationship between artist Mary Ann Wilson and her partner.
It's incredibly sweet if not overly soppy in some places but always brought a smile to my face. The two characters are unique and yet lovable in their determination and passion for each other.
The book is rather short and easy to read. I managed to finish it in a single sitting. Ergo I wouldnt fork out loads of money on it but I'd say it's worth a read. Something slightl different (more old fashion?) to the newer bog standard lesbian novels out there.
