Brilliant book, brilliant author, another masterpiece by Nicola Gordon Bowe, 26 Jan 2013
For those of us who have long awaited a revised and updated version of Nicola Gordon Bowe's acclamed first edition, this is another milestone in the study of Harry Clarke. Wonderfully produced and published by The History Press Ireland. There are significent differences to the 1994 edition that I also have. Nicola Gordon Bowe has added a lot more valuable information on the works of the artist, his techniques, the reception of many of the pieces once they were completed, the background of the time they were created in, including works being created by other artists at the time. Much, of course, can be found in the original editions but be in no doubt, this is a wonderful book to have if you are an admirer of this brilliant artist. Extremely well written by the greatest expert on Harry Clarke, The absorbing information on his life and work in detail, the magnificent colour plates, and the many captivating photos and illustrations, guarantee a wonderful time in the company of the awesome genius that Harry Clarke was. This is one to have and treasure forever. Have loved this artist with many years and have already learned a great deal more from this revised edtion. Over the past few years we have gone from a famine to a feast of works by and on the amazing Harry Clarke, for example, the fabulous Calla edition of Edgar Allan Poe's 'Tales of Mystery and Imagination', the absolutely superb edition by Gill and Macmillan Ireland, of 'Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales', and several others. One of the most important being, 'Strangest Genius: The Stained Glass of Harry Clarke' by Lucy Costigan and Michael Cullen, another magnificent milestone on the artist's work, another incredible book which is an artwork in itself, very well written, magnificently photographed, and produced by the same publishers as Nicola Gordon Bowe's updated best-selling 'Harry Clarke: The Life and Work', the highly esteemed History Press Ireland. Kudos to the publisher yet again!

Splendid heresies of Dr Dee, 10 Dec 2012
'The Heresy of Dr Dee' Phil Rickman's brilliant sequel to 'The Bones of Avalon, is as compulsively readable as its highly-rated predecessor. We get a well written, well-researched, enticing and magnificently crafted tale of murder, corruption, spies and quests, where nothing is what it seems and elements of the supernatural seem to lurk within the shadows of the streets, hills and glens. We learn how one of the most intriguing figures in history faces up to these mysteries and much more, why he came to be the man we know today from history books and biographies, and what a brilliant protagonist he makes in Phil Rickman's hands. Highly recommended - a totally gripping, absorbing and rewarding read!

A Book which deserves a trumpet score of praise!, 5 Dec 2012
'The Seventh Trumpet' is another triumph, Tremayne's ability to take us back in time to witness the world Fidelma and Eadulf lives in is not only sheer entertainment but also highly educational and in a an easy and totally absorbing way! We are also, thanks to his ability in creating such well rounded characters, that have credible and established back-stories, able to empathise and live the moments these character experience; moments of joy, anguish, happiness, horror, delight, fright, bereavement and jubilation. All the aspects of the human condition, something The Bard also did so well in his plays. Don't want to drop 'spoilers' for those who haven't read it yet, but you won't be disappointed, it is another riveting read. Tremayne's books are superb, and as always we look forward to the next novel in the series with baited breath. He is also underrated, this series should now have special editions, it should be on the radio and on TV. His readers have been saying so with years, lets hope the movie and TV executives wake up and realise what a great and gripping mystery series this is and one which would create blocbuster series and bestselling dvd boxsets!

A Chorus of life's voices on the Wind - Delightful, 4 Dec 2012
Clark Crouch's poetry is sheer joy, it holds a mirror up to life and reflects it back on the page with a pen powered with knowledge, understanding and a deep reserve of talent. Have been reading his poetry with years and each new volume of poetry opens more doors. Doors which are aligned along the corridor of life, the past, present and future, inside each of the doors we find worlds filled with humour and belly-laughter, good-times, hard-times, gut-wrenching decisions to be made, chilling out with friends both human and animal, its all there, and how! Poems that mirror our lives with such deep perception that they should be added to the communication disks/files being sent to outer space in exploatory spacecraft. From a traveller on a prairee trail to to the as yet unfamiliar pathways of outer space. It is not long since the cowboys rode in the prairees, some still do, their world reflect our world in many ways and this was Clark Crouch's world at one time in his youth. He writes from experience and does so with incredible talent, a beautiful, uplifting talent. His books are a joy to read whether taken down off our library shelf or accessed on our Kindle.

A Book to enjoy, relive and treasure, 4 Dec 2012
Clark Crouch writes about life in the US, from the 1930s to modern times. As we read through his adventure filled life we find that we share some of his experiences, The deep recession of the 1930s in Nebraska and the recession we are experiencing today; loss of loved ones; ways of life disappearing and being replaced at times by less endearing or supportive ways. But there is also joy and and a profound love of life and humanity in his book, a love of both wild and domesticated animals, their environment. Of the more useful inventions and uplifting progress in many areas of life along the way. He reminds us about how much we have to treasure and how much we face losing if we are not careful. This book is like taking a walk with a dear friend whose wisdom is enlightening, whose presence is delightful - a walk we never want to end. Happily it doesn't have to end there, we can carry our Kindle with Clark's book, wherever we are and whever we go. and it is never a lonely trail.

Beautiful timepiece, 20 April 2012
Fabulous, I received it as a gift and am really delighted to have such a beautiful clock. It has figures which rotate, and the sound of a cuckoo beside a babbling brook on the hour, it can be made silent for nightime hours. Took me a while to get the sound working until I realised it takes not one but two AA batteries, and each battery is facing a different way in polarity. At least this is so with my clock. It is great company and a joy indeed to have in one's home.

The amazing world of perfumers, 9 Mar 2012
What a book! The amazing background to Chanel No 5 with sex, politics, mysticism and intrigue. But also a deep commitment to the perfume that she, Gabrielle Chanel had created in her name - by Ernest Beaux. But the perfume had an even older history which is just as fascinating as its history once it had been named as Chanel No 5. Coco Chanel's amazing lifestory is intertwined with the perfume's story of course and what a pair they made - couldn't live with each other and couldn't live apart. Read the story and see for yourselves.
