1.0 out of 5 stars Zero Recall., 18 Aug. 2014
This review is from: Total Recall (Blu-ray)
In contrast to the movie's title, only 3 weeks after renting it I can't recall anything about it. Nothing good, not even anything bad. Nothing exciting or boring, striking or flat, resonant or implausible, nothing at all. Like it never even happened. That has to mean something.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide and current benchmark., 18 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If you are interested in the wartime Luftwaffe as a historian or modeller this book is an essential reference. This volume effectively covers everything except standard camouflage patterns and day fighters and can stand alone in its own right. If you can also obtain a copy of volume1, together they will comprehensively cover the subject as currently (2014) perceived.
If you are only going to buy one book on the subject this has to be it. If you consider buying an older series due to the unavailability of volume1 you should still buy this one as well in order to update the others.

Edition: Hardcover

2.0 out of 5 stars Entry level and very dated., 18 Aug. 2014
Knowledge of this subject has grown immensely and been extensively revised since this book was published. It was very good for its time but is now equal to 'The Renaissance Guide to Particle Physics'.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is definitely a movie to watch more than once., 18 Aug. 2014
This review is from: Killing Them Softly (Blu-ray)
All the standard ingredients to make an American mob movie smoothly mixed together and perfectly cooked with a little extra flavouring.
The movie deals with violent crime but does not linger over the gory details and avoids becoming seriously dark; in fact I found it quite engaging. It's full of great character illustrations from entry level petty criminals to the respected professional. Everyone has an angle with their own interests at heart and by definition nobody is honest, so things rarely unfold as planned. Or do they?
The depth of the plot creeps up on you quietly, and the movie kills you softly.

2.0 out of 5 stars CGI is star of the show., 18 Aug. 2014
This review is from: 47 Ronin (DVD)
The Last Samurai meets House of Flying Daggers and falls far short of either. 14 to 25 year old action fans will no doubt love it for the fight scenes, and sensitive viewers may find meaning in Reeves' long stare-into-the-camera close-ups (and there are many) but to me it was just Reeves staring at the camera.
The best part of it was the CGI which varied from so-so to near-perfect. It was so good at times that after I had returned the rental copy I wished I had watched the movie again purely to see what CGI I had actually accepted as real.

3.0 out of 5 stars You can see where the money went, but it just dosn't work., 17 July 2014
This review is from: The Lone Ranger (Blu-ray)
Johnny Depp's performance is, as always, highly entertaining. However, it's not his best, and the rest of the film drags along behind him. 4 stars for Depp and 2 for the rest giving an average of 3.
It's as if Disney decided to make a light-hearted vehicle for Depp to cash in on his "Sparrow", but then because Depp was playing a native American who is not even the main character, they had to give his part more substance. To do this they would use the film to show the raw deal that native Americans got as the ex-colonists grabbed everything, but then it's not very light-hearted anymore. To make a blockbuster movie the baddies are not simple robbers, but businessmen and politicians. In other words the establishment, the nation's captains and heroes. What happened to light-hearted?
What remains is either a bleak anti-corruption movie interrupted by frequent slapstick, or an adventurous romp dragged down by injustice and institutionalised evil.
I rented this movie and I will watch it again sometime, but I won't buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant. The best version of an excellent film, 17 July 2014
This review is from: Blade Runner (Blu-ray)
Absolutely brilliant. The best version of an excellent film.
Any version of Blade Runner is worth watching, but aspects of the main character which are only hinted at in all the versions are subtly developed in this one, opening up a whole new multi-faceted level.

2.0 out of 5 stars Despite the description saying the main language is English, ..., 17 July 2014
This review is from: 47 Ronin (DVD)
Despite the description saying the main language is English, the soundtrack is entirely in Japanese with English sub-titles. I do not usually find that a problem but in this case the rapid editing frequently left me unable to finish reading the dialogue, never mind watch the acting. I gave up after an hour because I did not know who was who, which side they were on or how their devious schemes were unfolding.

3.0 out of 5 stars Looks great, function.....well.......er......., 17 July 2012

This is a BIG spoon.
Looks realy posh - you could use it as a table serving spoon without reservation.
Very comfortable handle.
VERY non-stick.
Washes easily with no corners/crevices to hide germs.
My only problem with it is the not-very-ridgid stem. I have a habit of tapping the spoon against the rim of a pan after stirring in order to dislodge anything on the spoon. Because this is not ridgid it springs back and splatters everywhere. Asmall problem, I know, but it means I can't relax when using it.

4.0 out of 5 stars The best film of its genre., 13 Nov. 2006
This review is from: Twelve O'clock High [DVD] (DVD)
Written by two airmen who lived the story and made at a time before revisionists lost the plot, this film accurately portrays life for the airmen during the early part of the American daylight bombing campaign, initially over France and then the first raids over Germany. The characters and bomber group are all ficticious but the real people on whom they are based can easilly be identified by anyone with a reasonable knowledge of the history.

Technically the film is very accurate but with a few blunders : American scenary like a plank-built railway station and picket fences, several of the "enemy" fighters are actually Spitfires and P47's and some of the airplanes are B17G's instead of B17F's.

The acting varies from stiff to brilliant, with Peck delivering an oscar-worthy performance. Camera work and direction are very good.

On another level the film is an excellent study of military leadership methods and styles. It is also a basic lesson in warfare which the west seems to have forgotten in the 1950's.
