5.0 out of 5 stars Science gothic!, 6 Jan. 2015

This review is from: By The Sea (Kindle Edition)
I selected the five star rating for this book because it did something few books can do. It kept me awake, to find out what happened next, as I was traveling home after work on a long Saturday, having only had four hours sleep the night before.
Like the carnostomids in the story, this book defies classification. It's fantasy, horror, crime; a dash of science to aid suspension of disbelief, all wrapped in a gothic style. The pacing is very well done- two stories run simultaneously, the main story of the modern day and the brief tale based some time before. These intersect beautifully toward the end- but no spoilers!
Information is also provided at ideal times as the narrative homes in on different characters, so you never feel lost, though you are kept in a pleasant state of mystery until the end.

The characterisation is extremely well done. The author lists Fitch as his favourite character, and there I would have to agree. Her and Sheepwool leap of the page, and the dynamic between them is very entertaining. It's also refreshing to have two strong female leads.
The antagonist is also memorable, though I don't want to give anything away!

Who would I recommend this too? Anyone who enjoys sci fi, certainly. Fans of the gothic, crime, horror, people who love strong characterisation, Norfolk, or a good yarn as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!, 29 Mar. 2014

This is a well written and fascinating book, chronicling one man's journey of learning and how we can potentially all do a more effective and efficient job of pursuing excellence in any field.
The biographical stuff is interesting and supports his researches, giving examples of the concepts he is writing about.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not quite a Holmesian treat, but fairly good., 28 Jan. 2014

This was a fairly enjoyable read, with some good stories which could draw me in quite successfully, my favourites being 'a case of insomnia' and 'the drowned geologist'.
However, the style is not quite like either Conan Doyle or Lovecraft. In most of the stories, Holmes accepts the supernatural far too easily, and seems a very different character to the originals. Now this is to be expected, but for hard core fans of either Holmes or lovecraft, this could be a disappointment. Let the tales stand on their own though, and they are fine.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining biography, 30 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a short, lively and entertaining book which was a pleasure to read.
One other review at least stated that it was less about the notebook and more a biography, and this is a sound analysis. However, the notebook is the central idea which the biography leads up too, so, although the title is a misnomer, it at least describes the final thoughts of the book.
I would recommend this to anyone interested in Descartes' life and time, or the development of his thought. It is a good primer, and quite entertaining. However, it is basically a biography which is not suggested by its title, so give it a miss, or just slim the final chapters, if that is not what you are after.
The writer is a good communicator of complex ideas and writes in an entertaining style, my one complaint betting several typo's.

I had this book when i was young, and could half-remember several of the stories in it. I can remember that some scared me witless, and was curious about the ones I could not remember. Now, i can read up on them again!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice piece of martial arts equipment, 23 July 2013

This is a nice, light, well made knife which allows practice of all the techniques you can learn with this piece of weaponry.
It is fairly comfortable, the only drawback being that the edges where you finger goes through in the hole are a little sharp and sometimes uncomfortable. The piece could also benefit from being available in a variety of sizes.
Other than that, a well made and lightweight piece of kit which has given me many hours of fun practice.
