5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent..., 2 Aug. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The unit looks a little chunky and to be frank,a bit cheap and "plasticky", but this isn't really important. What is important, of course, is its performance. And it does perform - extremely well. If you need a digital booster, look no further.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent quality and design, 15 Jan. 2011

Like all boys, I like pocket multi-tools and have a shamefully expanding collection of them. I never thought I'd see a serious rival to the magnificent Leatherman tools but SOG are right up there... just possibly better even. The S-66 is a little larger than my Leatherman Wave, but fantastically constructed and designed, I must say I'm delighted with mine.

Steel quality is excellent; blades are VERY sharp and so far all seems highly durable. Note though that mine didn't have a saw but rather a file instead - also a serrated blade anyway so not an issue for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful nostalgia, 26 Dec. 2007
The previous reviewer has a valid point in that this volume covers a much broader spectrum of activities than just steam railways but there is a great deal of industrial transport,(heavy road haulage) and some wonderful footage of Southampton docks in the days of the great liners. The quality of the film making is absolutely first class and I would highly commend this DVD to anyone who has a general interest in our industrial heritage.

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute gem of a movie - in my personal top ten., 29 Sept. 2004
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
When you watch a movie like this it reminds you that filmmaking (in its purest form) is a true art, rather than just a money-making blockbuster enterprise. This is a completely beautiful film, handcrafted in as loving a fashion as any painting or sculpture. Thought has gone into every step of its production; Bernardo Bertolucci & Clare Peploe proving to be the creative force behind a film experience that they, and the wonderfully-amalgemed Thandie Newton/David Thewlis can be forever proud.
Set against the timeless backdrop of the eternal city, this is a modern day parable of the true meaning of love - if necessary all sacrificing, and far more than a means to an end; an end in itself. Simply wonderful.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stylish and enjoyable, 11 Jun. 2004

I enjoyed this film and would recommend it as a worthy attempt at an artful and intelligent piece. Snipes is at his considerable best and portrays his character with great screen presence. In fact when you see Mr Snipes in a role such as this you wish he'd make more movies in this vein. A great supporting cast and thoughtful direction make this a minor gem, marred just a little by perhaps a slightly contrived ending. If you like this film see Richard Gere in Intersection.

4.0 out of 5 stars A simply beautiful film..., 11 Jun. 2004
I loved this movie... very difficult review to write as there's something a little indefinable about it. It's a beautifully understated piece that calms you and draws you in so subtly that you find it stays with you long after you've seen it. In fact I would say it's as much a work of art as it is entertainment.
A friend derided me the other day during a bout of stormy weather when I commented how beautiful rain can be... if you understand what I mean then I think you'll like this film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Artistic fiction, but wonderful nevertheless...., 10 Sept. 2003
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
In my view, this isn't an out & out attempt at a strict biopic, and the casual viewer should be aware that a considerable amount of artistic license has been taken with the storyline.
However, get over the need for absolute historical accuracy; what this movie's really about is providing a hugely enjoyable feast for the senses. Gary Oldman is superb. Whoever decided to cast this seemingly unlikely choice for the lead role deserves an award for inspiration bordering on genius. The metamorphosis Oldman achieves is little short of miraculous, a grand statement to the high art of character acting. It's clear that our man has researched his role with an absolute determination to capture the great composer's persona. Thank you Mr Oldman, for what it's worth you've earned this punter's total respect and I'm sure there'll be literally millions more like me. No doubt some of the more academic types will scoff at my sentiments but I think they are missing the point. This is an extremely beautiful film, hugely enjoyable and will doubtless encourage many encountering Beethoven for the first-time to investigate further, itself a great thing.
The setting & atmosphere for the gradually-decaying early 19th century Hapsburg Empire are finely depicted & evocative, and in particular the use of light - both natural & artificial, shows exceptional skill. This is a work of craftmanship by a team who obviously knew what they were doing and worked hard at getting things right.
To sum up, this isn't history, but make no mistake, as a piece of entertainment it's a classic. . The final evocation of Beethoven's spirit set to the Ode to Joy captures this great genius's monumental legacy... hope, a gift for all mankind.

5.0 out of 5 stars I bet Mozart himself watches this in heaven..., 4 Sept. 2003

This breathtakingly beautiful & atmospheric production must be as close to perfection as any mortal hand could make. Frankly I wonder why anyone would ever bother filming another version of Mozart's dark masterpiece - Mr Losey's will never, ever, be bettered. If the martians landed and asked to be shown mankind's greatest artistic achievement I think I'd put this video in my VCR and sit them down in front of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars An essential read for any history fan, 9 Aug. 2003
Any amateur history buff will find Wellington: A Personal History a wonderful read. The author has evidently taken the approach of providing an insight into the personal life & character of this great man - very arguably the greatest Briton of all time. And what a fascinating character the "Iron Duke" is. Starting with his tough upbringing in an impoverished minor noble family, this book gives the reader some real sense of the context in which the young Arthur Wellesley developed.
Commissioned into the army as mere "food for powder" (his Mother's own sentiments!), as a young handsome officer Arthur could have easily chosen the temptations of becoming just another "Jack a Dandy" Beau, but instead he grew increasingly aware of his own genius and military ability. Here was a young man who "knew what he was about" and clearly decided to dedicate his energy to the dutiful business of becoming a great military leader. We follow his life's adventures through his army career and then weary of war, his decision to become a great statesman, but essentially this book is about the man himself rather than his achievements; his personal traits & character, his conversation & opinions on all manner of subjects. It's fascinating stuff. If you're interested in Wellington the man, read this book and then visit Stratfield Saye (as I did) - it's the closest you can get to bringing history back to life.
There are some wonderful books on Wellington now available, and this is one of the very best of them.
