5.0 out of 5 stars Yet another wonderful Avengers MMW, 6 Jun 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A very enjoyable Marvel Masterwork - though no great stand out stories. Particularly loved the Cosmic Cube tale - and especially the end with the Mole Man finding the cube and throwing it away as a childish toy... how close he was to be the next Thanos. Great to see Hercules in the story along with the Black Widow / Goliath / Wasp etc

Small selection of extras this time around - a few covers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb film, 6 Jun 2012
This review is from: Prometheus [DVD] (DVD)
No idea what the DVD will be like ... looking forward to it once it comes out.

Totally superb film with excellent performances thoughout (except for some of the minor characters who little to do other than do and die). Wasn't sure what to expect - glad it was not an 'Alien' film with all the action based around the creature - Michael Fassbender - yet another great performance.

All very Jack Kirby / Celestials / Eternals etc - with a bit of Chris Foss in there.

Enjoyed the entire film - had a majesty the first film and sequels never had.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent product, 31 May 2012
Based on the trial.

It is a truly excellent product from Adobe Systems Incorporated.

Just wish it wasn't such an expensive upgrade because for me, the differences between CS5 extended and CS6 extended are really hard to justify the cost. It is a fast application, it has slightly nicer 3D features etc as well as some cleaner interfaces but .. is that enough?

The pattern script feature is superb - one of the key improvements for me and the weird thing is that it is not even listed in the improvements or upgrade .. if you have yet to notice the pattern scripts / deco scripts in CS6 you can use them via the edit fill command and patterns (and scripted checkbox on) - you can then run various scripts to apply patterns in 1000s of new ways such as symmetry. You can use this to create stunning frame designs, 3D designs and much more... probably the key thing for me to ponder about over the upgrade to CS6

Gideon's Badge
Gideon's Badge
by J.J. Marric
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Yet another gem, 27 April 2012
This review is from: Gideon's Badge (Paperback)
Yet another classic Gideon book. This one starts in London with a traveling salesman and ends up in the exciting streets of New York (the cruise to New York also features a crime or two). Thoroughly enjoyed the book.

Why was it called Gideon's Badge ? that is only briefly mentioned (a page) .. as ever, the titles of the Gideon books baffle - surely Gideon's New York would have been a better title. Also the cover, not sure what that has to do with the book at all. An image of New York / London divided would have worked a whole lot better (or perhaps a cruise ship)

Still, a wonderful book as ever from the Gideon series by John Creasey

5.0 out of 5 stars Big improvement, 12 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
After our existing one decided to go into a weird 'system update mode' (along with a strong smell of burning), I purchased this new Sky box.

The first thing you notice is the size - it is smaller.

Startup is a lot quicker, the old one took forever to get going in the morning.

Shutdown also is also faster, virtually instant (at the moment !) - the old one took forever to shutdown as it would spend about 20 minutes whirring around doing probably not much at all. The new one stopped as soon as I pressed the off button - saying that, it only puts it into standby apparently (amber button) - to completely switch off the machine - had to hold down the off switch for about 10 seconds and that turns the amber button into a red button and then I can switch the machine off at the plug (unless there is something to record overnight, I like to turn off the TV / sky box etc)

The old one would spend half the day rumbling with its disk thrashing doing something (no idea, not on anytime or recording anything) - the new one, totally silent - which is great

The old one warmed the room - it was always blowing out a lot of hot air. The new one feels (at the moment) ok - some slight warmth but acceptable. Hopefully a very good sign for energy saving and power use

EPG etc seems fine. The picture quality is much the same as before, perhaps a little better

A nice new clean handset - very useful.

No documentation came with the machine but that is mainly online now so no big deal. I prefer to access the info online that rely on a booklet printed a few years back

The delivery was by sky-deals .. super fast, ordered on the Tuesday and arrived on the Wednesday - very impressive

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully drawn book, 18 Mar 2012
This review is from: Heart throbs (Paperback)
A lovely book - an autobiographical (part) tale of a childhood in the hot and sweaty summer days in the South of France - beautifully painted in watercolor. It contains a number of stories full of sensual / sexual awakenings / religious guilt. Classic European BD.

3.0 out of 5 stars Plastic man, Two-gun Lil, Doll Man - color and b&w, 14 Mar 2012
This review is from: OKAY ADVENTURE ANNUAL
A nice annual from the 50s though I couldn't find an actual date on the annual. Most of the stories are of that period such as 'Captain Billions' (Plastic Man, originally published in Plastic Man, 1951) and 'Doll Man's Dilemma' (Doll Man 34, again 1951) and the 'Ghost of Grim Gulch' (Crack Comics 72, 1951). Suggests sometime after 1951. All the titles seem to be from the comics of the excellent 40s / 50s publisher, Quality Comics. Some of the comic pages are in color, some are not. The annual also includes a number of short text stories.

Two ok plastic man stories featuring a selection of rogues, dubious women, and Woozy falling head over heels in love (as in most of the PM tales as well as in Woozy's spinoff tales)

An Okay annual.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable film, 24 Feb 2012

This review is from: The Frightened City [DVD] (DVD)
First rate film with a great cast. The story was very reminiscent of many a film noir, with classic dark streets, seedy nightclubs, dubious night exotic singers, loyal girlfriend, thug with a heart of gold etc (only missing some rain).

A fan of Gideon, it was a pleasure to see John Gregson in a pre-Gideon but definitely Gideon-like role. Even Sean Connery a few more months before his first Bond appearance (and at times it even felt a bit Bond-like especially the scenes with the 'Russian' dancer / singer, Yvonne Romain).

A few decent shots of 1961 London (mainly at the start and end .. Shaftsbury Avenue and up Charing Cross Road past Foyles) - which I guess is slightly out of place as the actual scenes are in Soho, Carnaby Street etc area

Well worth seeing.

Love and Rockets (Love & Rockets)
by Jaime Hernandez
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Superb, 20 Feb 2012
One of the very early collections of Love and Rockets, though probably now been superseded by the many collections available. Still, a truly superb and inspiring collection of works from Jaime Hernandez - showing the life and loves of Maggie, Hopey, Penny etc. Classic

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb collection but could have been better, 3 Feb 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A really wonderful series of 'Marvel Firsts' - this time for the early 1970s. Slimmer than the 60s (though the entire 70s are spread over 3 volumes), the book features many great 70s Marvel tales - Amazing Adventures 1, 11, 18; Marvel Spotlight 1-2; marvel Features 1; Marvel Premiere 1; Hero for Hire 1 etc - so Black Widow, Inhumans, Ghost Rider, Defenders, Warlock, Luke Cage, Dracula, Killraven, Shanna, The Cat etc

The book also features many covers of comics and characters not featured with actual pages from their earliest issue - mostly reprint titles such as Harvey, Marvel Triple Action, humour titles, westerns, war etc

It would have been, for me, a perfect volume if it had included an additional 100 or so pages. The book could then have featured Night Nurse (one of my favourites), Gulliver Jones, The Sisterhood, Black Brothers, Chili, Crazy, Spoof and many others. I can understand the non-appearance of Conan, Kull etc but not the others.
