4.0 out of 5 stars Aida - Cheryl Studer, 16 Jan. 2014

This review is from: Aida [DVD] [1994] [2010] (DVD)
Cheryl Studer is perhaps one of the few in the 1990's who could bring to life, the character of Aida. Therefor it was with great interest not only to see this great American diva perform, but also perform with a stella cast; with great support from Covent Garden design team; The Royal Opera House Chorus and the Covent Garden Orchestra with Edward Downes taking control of the music.

Concerning the Music and production - Edward Downes, gives a solid, vigorous account of one of Verdi's most shimmering scores. Elijah Moshinsky's staging abounds in many clever touches. The production is not modern in conception - thankfully! However, Elijah Moshinsky’s visually attractive staging is a big plus. Maybe there is confusion in the period of the costumes, but overall it is intended to suggests ancient Egypt, and the big crowd scene in the second act has a high degree of visual impact. Some scenes are sparse - this is not the Paris or Verona Opera version, therefore you do have to imagine the monumental architecture of Egypt e.g. - in Act One, a Royal Palace; a Mysterious Temple; the Processional Grand March in Act 2 scene 2 through the populated streets; the palm laden palace court yards of act three; and the entombment in the finale scene of the opera. The production abounds with Egyptian nuances, figurines, the odd statue, etc. But it is modest in its staging.

The singing of Studer is by far, worthy of purchase of this edition. She was still gifted at this time with a luscious round soprano voice that maintained its glow even in the softest notes, her singing was still beautifully drawn, controlled and coloured with darker inflections that added dramatic intensity in all that she performed. O'Neil still at this time used the voice sympathetically and coloured the lines of music, delicately stylistically; in particular his mezza-voce singing during the last moments of act four in the tomb. Luciana d'Intino performance and voice, her voice is perhaps not the most beautiful — it would never be compared to a nightingale or a running stream — but in its harsh passion and diamond technique it is unsurpassed; each time she sings we move a little closer to the edge of our seat, as if we truly didn’t know the vengeance she has planned; our thoughts race with memories of the unrequited distant love; we have to remind ourselves to breathe. And did we mention the acting?? The acting is not over done or over acted. The performance is controlled and conservative. However the production should be apart of everyone's collection.

The book is very informative and gives good information on most areas of Tunisia. Pictures and reading are equally spread across the pages so your not bogged down with to much dull and dusty information. If you want to do more research you can at your leisure before or after you come back from your travels. This book is for the traveler not for the historian.

These book's are a good starter for your travels. Good price and well presented.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a shame that the following series were not realsed !, 26 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
2 Point 4 Children was a 1990s British sitcom that was created and written by Andrew Marshall. It follows the lives of the Porter family; an average family that is persistently faced with surreal situations and sheer bad luck. The show's original run was from 1991-1999. A total of 56 episodes were made over eight series, including six Christmas specials. Each special saw the cast perform a Christmas or special theme song. Andrew Marshall virtually wrote the whole 8 series.

The first three series were released on Region 2 DVD, by Eureka Video in 2005, however, after insufficient sales, they stated "sales were not good" and that they do not intend to release any more. Despite poor DVD sales a box set of series 1-3 was also made available in 2008, again through Eureka Video.

There are differing reports of why further series have not been released. 2Entertain cite clearance problems in series 7, also stating that one issue (though not music) in an episode of series 7 would interfere with the actual episode. Regarding music clearances, writer and creator, Andrew Marshall, comments that "All 2point4 Children shows were produced also in a clearable Worldwide edition, so I can't imagine what these mysterious problems might be, other than ridiculous BBC internal tariffs."

I was so saddened that the remaining series were not allowed to be released, and I would have through that they would or should have released the remaining series 4-8 plus the extra Christmas edition's, as a homage to the late Gary Olsen who played the child like Ben Porter. If for no other reason this should have been released to show what a good example and role model of fatherhood and how a dad should behave. He gave me at least the view that a father is for life not for Christmas.

Excellent series not to be missed !!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic well recommended film for Chtistmas !, 25 Dec. 2012
I had seen this film from my childhood on the old black and white TV in the late 60's. I was so taken by Alister Sims portrayal of Scrooge that his performance has always stuck in my mind. Seeing this again has brought all the memories flooding back. This is a Clasdic Film, and the general interpretation excellent. The quality is also good for a film of this are. Beautiful Film well recommended to watch at Christmas time.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT PRODUCTION OF KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN!, 25 Oct. 2011
This review is from: Kiss Of The Spiderwoman (Audio CD)
WHY THIS NEVER WENT FURTHER DEFEATS ME ! Ok it got some questionable reviews but also got some awards 'Evening Standard Awards' in London With a cast to die for which included Brent Carver as Molina, Anthony Crivello as Valentin, and the earthy tones of the lovely Chita Rivera as Spider Woman/Aurora. This is interesting both musically and also vocal line melody! Some of the numbers do need a singer of great variety and experience! Listen to 'Come' and then listen to hoe Chita Rivera sings 'And the Moon Grows Dimmer' some lovely colourful singing!

The New York Times review stated that the musical "does not meet all the high goals it borrows from Manuel Puig's novel. When it falls short, it pushes into pretentious overdrive (a "Morphine Tango," if you please) and turns the serious business of police-state torture into show-biz kitsch every bit as vacuous as the B-movie cliches parodied in its celluloid fantasies. Yet the production does succeed not only in giving Ms. Rivera a glittering spotlight, - [ on this I agree as I believe that she shines in all the songs and ensemble work] but also in using the elaborate machinery of a big Broadway musical to tell the story of an uncloseted, unhomogenized, unexceptional gay man who arrives at his own heroic definition of masculinity. Does this perhaps sound slightly 'HOMOPHOBIC' ????

2.0 out of 5 stars A typical good time musical ! Maybe Maybe not!, 25 Oct. 2011
This review is from: Addams Family / O.C.R. (Audio CD)
I found this to be a musical which hearkened back to an old style musical. Melodies you could sing along to and easy to remember plus a recognisable and easy story line to follow! Meaning no sub plots no depth! A winner !!!!

Sadly I listened to this 3 times and then put it away on the shelf to gather dust! Its not a WICKED, LES MISERABLES, CABARET, OR PHANTOM OF THE OPERA! Just the music itself is just a romp in basic harmony there are no surprises in the music! Or for that matter the plot! If you want a musical to listen to in the car, and have the children sing along with the CD this is possible one! But also have Oklohama, Seven Brides for Seven Bros., The Sound of Music and South Pacific as a good back up! Good listening !
