5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best of the series..., 23 April 2012
Excellent entry here with Tom Conway taking the reigns and going solo as The Falcon for the first time. There's plenty of intruigue, the hotel setting works brilliantly and the tracking shot with Conway questioning a woman while walking along the side of a swimming pool is just superb, look out for it...

Great family viewing or rainy afternoon entertainment...

5.0 out of 5 stars The first of the Falcon movies..., 23 April 2012
This review is from: The Gay Falcon [DVD] (DVD)
George Sanders sets up the story here for Gay Lawrence aka The Falcon, a lovable rogue who partakes in various crime solving capers, usually at the behest of a beautiful woman. In this first installment of the long running series his weakness for the fairer sex is very prominent, something which diminished as the series evolved. The first of 3 Sanders movies before he handed over to his real-life brother, Tom Conway, in the 4th film 'The Falcon's Brother'...

Great stuff

5.0 out of 5 stars Hugh Sinclair on form again, 16 April 2012
It's a shame Hugh Sinclair didn't continue as The Saint because he makes a decent fist of it in this and the preceeding movie 'The Saint's Vacation'. Here he's battling gold smugglers on the English coast in the penultimate film in the series. Louis Hayward (who began the series with the Saint in New York) was to return for the final movie...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent installment in RKO's Falcon series..., 16 April 2012
Tom Conway stars in this cracking entry in the Falcon movie series which sees him scooting down to Mexico to help a woman find her (supposedly) dead Father after his paintings start showing up unexpectedly. Plenty of thrills, great dialogue and good pacing make for one of the best films in the canon. The on-location scenes really add to the mix.

Well worth a watch...

5.0 out of 5 stars Hugh Sinclair does a thoroughly decent job..., 28 Mar. 2012
This review is from: The Saint's Vacation [DVD] (DVD)
Hugh Sinclair was on something of a hiding to nothing with this one, taking over from George Sanders after his farewell in The Saint In Palm Springs (one of Sanders best, in fact). So it's pleasure to say that in this and The Saint Meets The Tiger (his only other appearance) he manages to pull off a really good performance...

Plenty of atmopshere, thrills and suspense. Well worth checking out...

5.0 out of 5 stars Possibly Tom Conway's finest 'Falcon'..., 28 Mar. 2012
This is great stuff, maybe Tom Conway's best adventure as The Falcon, where he must solve a murder on a Hollywood film backlot. Conway is ably supported by the brilliant Veda Ann Borg as a wise-cracking taxi driver who provides some real chemistry (Probably Conway's best ever side-kick/partner).

The action is well paced and directed by the excellent Gordon Douglas (Them!)...

Enjoy

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning..., 28 Mar. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Format (Audio CD)
The PSB's have always genuinely loved B-Sides and this collection gathers up some truly brilliant songs from the duo. Some, in fact, have absolutely no business being on a B-Sides collection such it their melodic quality, lyrical assurity and general polish... This is up there with Alternative, believe me...

What really works here is how these tracks are kept simple. No overblown costume changes, excess production or pomp, it's all about the songs. This is what really makes this album so brilliant, just like Alternative... These B-Sides are incredibly consistent, very immediate, intimate, mature and they never outstay their welcome. I've always thought PSB B-Sides were more like vignettes, not over-long or ponderous and many are of better quality than some of their album material... Almost

all those featured here are brilliant, however, some are really, really exceptional. Sort of 'first listen and you'll love it' kind of tracks, if you know what I mean by that... And that is a point worth mentioning, because when I bought Alternative, I already knew virtually all of the B-Sides because I still bought their singles back then. Not so with Format, but it hasn't detracted from my enjoyment one bit...

As with Alternative, this proves that when the PSB's keep it simple, they can still be at the very top of their game... For fans who just buy their albums (like me) this is virtually 3 albums worth of new, unheard material... For fans who have wandered away a little in recent years due to some of their patchy album content (also like me), buy this. It'll remind you of why you loved the PSB's so much in the first place...

I'm tempted to say it's their best album since Alternative... If it's not, it's certainly their most consistent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Hammer with bags of atmosphere, 13 Oct. 2011
This is great stuff, just great... Peter Cushing really was a magnificent actor, and his performance here is as earthy and believeable as ever. Cushing and Forrest Tucker play 2 explorers searching for the titular creature but for very different reasons. Tucker's character wants to capture and exploit it, Cushing's to understand it. It makes for some good interplay between the two, but the star here is the atmosphere generated by Val Guest's able direction, the perfect pacing and despite some other reviews, the great sets.

The tension is built so effectively that you genuinely don't mind not seeing the creature until the very end of the film. It only adds to the slow build of expectation. In terms of the DVD it's a perfectly watchable print, fairly tidy in fact and the audio is good too... In short, if you're a classic horror or Hammer fan, this is a must. Buy it!

This is a solid entry in the RKO Falcon series with Tom Conway heading West to solve another murder. The pace is good, plot entertaining and the atmosphere comes through in heaps.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tom Conway in his 8th Falcon..., 30 Jun. 2011
Tom Conway is as brilliant as ever here in what has to be said is not the best Falcon adventure of the series, but hey, that doesn't stop it being leagues above other B-Movie series of this period.

Here, The Falcon and Goldie get mixed up in a kidnapping case and things end up in 'explosive' fashion... Great fun.
