5.0 out of 5 stars Slick darkwave from Xymox, 24 Feb. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This album is a very different animal to 'Darkest Hour', from the outset this album appears to be a deeper, less spontaneous but more reflective collection of tracks that have a warmer more crafted and clean feel. Its pretty sparse on guitar (apart from those cheeky little hooks C.O.X. do so well), this is definitely a synthy album but is far from cold sounding as there's plenty of texture with piano embellishments and keyboard sounds that pay tribute subtly to their 80's & 90's albums and glimpses of the 4AD sound that befits clan of Xymox so well (no signs of the industrial feel of 'Farewell' here). The album flows well so is a really nice journey from start to finish. Haunting and powerful yet kind of uplifting, full of dark romance with a sinister edge that's alluring. Clan of Xymox fans new and old should be happy, fans of the 'In Love We Trust' album will love this, perhaps the most similar.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime Gothic., 25 Dec. 2013

Without doubt the finest Gothic band to have walked the earth in dusty boots!
This box set is just the best £15 anyone could spend, it contains the first three albums, live cd and rarities disc.
Dawnrazor (1987) displays great promise and includes some great songs but sounds like a collected body of songs rather than being an album proper. The sound is kinda generic for Beggars Banquet at the time so the band don't sound as unique and coherent as in subsequent albums; next is The Nephilim (1988) and the magic begins. Moving, haunting, emotive, this album sweeps you along bathed in strings, hypnotic bass and then Mc.Coy's sublime vocals. A truly great album which with songs like 'Moonchild' and the brooding yet epic 'Last Exit...' how could it get better? Well, strangely enough with 'Elysium' (1990). This is the masterpiece, this album from its opening note to the final fade is just beyond praise, still for me the epitome of the gothic genre. All the mood, atmosphere and depth of the previous album but here is a warmth and serenity that wraps around you and takes you somewhere otherworldly. As amazing now as it was the first time I heard it! Then comes 'Earth Inferno' (1991), a live album that shows that this band can capture all the facets that make their music so captivating even on stage. Well recorded for the time and with all the essential songs 'Earth Inferno' is a great testament to the creativity and musicianship of the band (particularly with this original line-up).
The bonus disc 'Singles & Mixes' is a little treasure box of alternate versions and mixes (all good, not messed with too much)!

Often imitated, these are the godfathers of gothic music (along with Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy etc of course), later releases on other labels are 'Zoon' (1996), 'Fallen' (2002) (a conroversial release as Carl Mc.Coy claims the album was unfinished and not ready for consumption (it was released during a rift between Mc.Coy and Jungle Recs.) but is actually very good!! 'Mourning Sun' follows in 2005, a new line-up and a cleaner sound,(title track amazing)! Then most recently 'Ceremonies' (2012), a wonderful live collection also with DVD that leaves me gasping for more. New material is promised. Soon I hope!

I heard this album back in 2002 when I was lucky enough to come across it in a charity clearance sale ( I worked for EMI for many years and the annual 'clearout' was a chance to find obscure promo's etc. for £5 a carrier bag full)! Since it has become a regular go-to album in my collection. This copy I bought recently was a gift to a friend who'd heard me playing it. He loved it and has passed the word on to other people. Thats the thing with this album, whilst also serving as a soundtrack to a dark Euro movie it stands up as a fine piece of work. This band are massive in Scandinavia and possess the knack of writing catchy songs with quirky construction that seem to delight everyone I have played it around. Check out YouTube for 'Transparent & Glasslike', if you like that then you must have this album!

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb anthology., 27 Jun. 2013

This anthology gives you a concise history of the solo career of the guy that was the face of Bauhaus; that said, Peter Murphy's solo work illustrates a far more diverse artist who seems to be able to dip into numerous styles and come up with songs and arrangements (some a far cry from the Bauhaus sound) that move and astound. The only danger (as I found out) was that while it seems the logical choice to opt for the 'best of' at first when exploring an artist (although I've been a fan of Bauhaus for many years), in the case of this collection, it leaves you wanting more. No bad thing you might say, and I agree, the only problem being that you may have to buy the entire back catalogue (a fair few titles, especially given that his solo career runs continuously from '95 when this compilation ends right up to a release just recently)! This really is that diverse and genuinely good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful collection of short stories., 9 April 2013

I bought this book as I am a huge fan of Something Wicked This Way Comes and hadn't read any Ray Bradbury for a while. This is a great book for travelling as the stories are each manageable in short reading chunks, great for reading between flights, etc. Each story leaves you pondering the darker side of humanity along with the wonders of the modern world; sometimes disturbing, always beautifully descriptive and in many cases deeply prophetic. I really enjoyed this!

This album is a really fine debut, the sound is brooding and sexy, the vocals smoulder and the guitars soar, this really is a fine piece of work. Comparable to a whole range of old bands; Siouxsie, Bat for Lashes, Kate Bush and others. Kinda dark in a sensual way, one for really listening to at night to really capture the mood. Restores hope to me that there are still genuine alternative bands out there, I look forward to more!!

This was the first 3EB for a while so didn't know what to expect as a big fan of their earlier albums. A fine album all told, not sure if they have quite as much to say as before, that bit older so maybe they've just lost some of their angst, but wonderful lyrics as always. Standout track for me is 'Sharp Knife', everything a 3EB track should be! Respectable album but 'From The Vein' (2003) tops it for me on strength of songs and coherence. If you like their other albums I'm sure you'll like this, but I suspect just not quite as much.

I'd been looking for a good thick denim jean for ages and these are the bomb!! Great combat style jean, not too baggy, great cut and shape (and not O.T.T on the branding). Very happy with these, you can pay far more for far less but actually don't think you could top these! Good wide leg hem so sit great over a pair of fat skate shoes. Love 'em.

This is the album from Filter I've been waiting for. fans of the earlier albums will find everything here that 'Anthems for the Damned' didn't at least for me deliver due to being just too political. Trouble with Angels is angsty, even manic at times with Richard Patrick's demented trademark screams but encapsulates Filter's energy, and as always the production is good so in all a satisfying listen that shouldn't disappoint existing fans or new listeners.
