Cheap, effective and easy to use, 11 Jan 2010
I rarely ever review things I've bought from Amazon, but I am seriously impressed with this router for the price. We live in the sticks in Spain, so 3G is our only option for internet, and we wanted a way to use 2 laptops and my PS3 with our vodaphone K3520 dongle.
Firstly it arrived in 3 days when Britain was in the grip of ice and Snow. Kudos to Amazon there. Set up was easy. Plug it in. Connect a laptop to the router with a network cable. Plug in the dongle. As someone else has noted, the USB socket is very close to the power socket, and our dongle was too fat to squeeze in next to it. A USB extention cable is provided, and it now just sits next to the router box. Netbook users like me should take note that the set up software runs on a CD ROM and I did not have a physical drive. The set up software did not seem to be available as a download from the companies website, but luckily I had an external CD drive that I used to load the software.
Set up took about 2 minutes, I simply needed to put in my Country, 3G provider and PIN number for the dongle and after a couple of minutes of timer it connected to the net and stayed there. Settings are saved, and now I can disconnect and reconnect the pen and it reconnects to the net automatically without any problems.
Range wise, I my house has 10cm thick brick walls throughout internally , and 15cm thick concrete ceiling construction, and 30cm thick brick external walls and is about 100 m2 on each floor. I walked round the house yesterday playing a track on Spotify with no problems. I also walked 20 metres to the end of the garden, and it was fine.
Speed wise, my wife used it to make a skype call yesterday while I was listening to the radio on iPLayer on the PS3 with no degradation of signal of either activity.
The routers admin panel seems pretty comprehensive and have most functions you would require, particularly the ability to set up static IPs and perform port forwarding. I hope this review is of help to someone considering buying this product. I think it's a great bit of kit.
