The Brethren (Fortunes of France 1)
The Brethren (Fortunes of France 1)
by Robert Merle
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.99

2.0 out of 5 stars An Opportunity Missed?, 10 Dec. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An interesting period of French History, but the book takes a long time to get going. To me the writing seemed laborious, and the pace far too slow. However, as others have suggested, perhaps this may have something to do with the age of the book and the translation. Certainly if you compare it with the recent historical novels by Hilary Mantel (eg Wolf Hall), which are also large books but for me much more enjoyable, the style of The Brethren seems very old-fashioned.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, 5 Dec. 2015
As others have said, this is a simple step counter but the quality is good. I have bought 2 SW200's previously, the last one nearly 4 years ago. The belt clip is very strong, but after using my previous one daily, eventually the open/close clip has begun to fail. Nevertheless, highly recommended. Our local university thinks so too apparently.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much better than the original 32B, 28 Oct. 2015

The original 32B cassette was a clean design & easy to wash. This new version has the same clean design but I found it much improved - faster and smoother to shave.

4.0 out of 5 stars and a useful Glossary., 26 Feb. 2015
This review is from: Cobra (Benny Griessel) (Hardcover)
Benny Griessel is a veteran of the South African Police. He is drawn into a case involving the kidnapping of a British scientist by a gang called "Cobra". But for mysterious reasons the Secret Services are interfering in the case. Pickpocket Tyrone also plays a major role. I found it a little slow to start, but it became engrossing and very exciting towards the end. Very interesting, multi-stranded plot with well-drawn characters. Strong South African "colour" with some use of Africaans phrases, and a useful Glossary.

3.0 out of 5 stars Economical but not suited for all lamp locations, 26 Feb. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I had been buying halogen mini globe bulbs for my original 40 watt tungsten mini globes, and was interested in buying these Ring mini-globes which seem at least 3 times more efficient than the halogen ones (7w as opposed to 28W).
But these bulbs are to be used in a ceiling light, with 3 glass shades allowing all-round light but shades opening upwards and the BC fitting at the bottom, and these bulbs seem to give off their light quite a long way up from the base, rather than all round the bulb (as the tungsten & halogen ones did), so they might be OK for lights at seat level but they are unfortunately not so good for our ceiling light.
You can see from the illustration of the bulb that only the top third is actually the bulb part, which may explain why we are having this issue. With the other bulbs about two-thirds is actually giving out light. I think I shall go back to halogen lights for the moment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, 8 Feb. 2014

I am carer for a patient who tends to spill food and drink. Before trying these disposable, stick-on paper protectors we were continually washing blouses, jumpers and cloth napkins. These Napkleens are quite large, very easy to use and we have found them very effective and labour-saving. Strongly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Fictional Story but Some Important Historical Themes, 8 Feb. 2014
This review is from: Pantheon (Paperback)
James Zennor, an idealistic young man, joins the Republican cause in the Spanish Civil War, until he is badly injured and after recuperating back in England he becomes an Oxford don. But he has been psychologically scarred by the war and his behaviour at home begins to disintegrate, especially when his wife and son leave him without explanation.
After a slow start the novel ramps up its pace through many an unexpected twist and turn. It is a fictional tale but revolving around real challenges to the British War Effort, at a time when Britain was standing alone.
Perhaps the derring-do in the book's latter stages is a tad overdone and somewhat unbelievable, but I found the themes strong, interesting and important.

2.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written, potentially interesting but so slow, 4 Oct. 2013
This review is from: The Windsor Faction (Hardcover)
An upper-class girl is caught up in the appeasement faction at the beginning of the war after Wallis Simpson has died and Edward VIII is still on the throne. Beautifully written with a detailed and perhaps accurate period atmosphere, with an unusual perspective on this dangerous development. But I found it incredibly slow-paced. As some other reviewers have said, this looks like a good idea which didn't quite come off.
