The Invisible Ones
The Invisible Ones
by Stef Penney
Edition: Hardcover
Price: 16.42

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read., 4 Jan 2013
This review is from: The Invisible Ones (Hardcover)
I enjoyed this book very much. It was great to see a more rounded picture of gypsy life in the UK, rather than the 'big, fat' narrow view so loved by certain quarters of the media.

The book was well researched and beautifully written. The use of Romany language and custom was nicely done, with a couple of cultural clues inserted to help solve the central mystery along the way.

I enjoyed it more than 'Tenderness of Wolves', although that was very good, and I look forward to reading the next Stef Penney novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real London, 4 Mar 2012
This is a wonderful book. It is well written and fascinating. If you love London you will enjoy this book.

The interview with the teenagers talking about how people should learn to 1, cross the road properly, 2, use the tube map, and 3, not stare, made me laugh out loud. I also enjoyed the 100% certain truth that no Londoner would ever eat in an Angus Steak House.

It is a warm book, an excellent cross section of Londoners and ex Londoners, those who thrive, those who just survive, and those who left. I recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good service, 8 April 2011
I bought these shoes a size larger as suggested but they were still too small. I contacted the company and sent them back. The company gave a prompt refund. So full marks to the company for service, not so great on the sizing.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book, 11 May 2010
This review is from: The Breaking of Eggs (Hardcover)
This is an excellent book. Well written with a strong narrative.

It looks at historical events of Europe since before the second world war from the perspective of a man, his family and his ideology. It is moving, thought provoking, but very readable.

This is a lovely bag of wooden bricks. The smallest bricks quite small, so be cautious if buying for under 3's, but I am delighted with them. Lots of fun for little ones just stacking and knocking over, whilst older ones can use their imagination to build garages and railway bridges etc. Excellent value, good old fashioned quality.

It is pretty good quality item. One of the fixing straps snapped in high wind, but on the whole I am happy with this cover.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good basic book, 31 Dec 2009
This book is good for a brief overview. For a more detailed discussion the more expensive Gillebaud book would be a wise investment, but this is fine for a quick reference

5.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting book, 31 Dec 2009
I bought this as a present so didnt read it, but the person for whom it was bought was delighted. It has lots of ideas for craft projects, some very complex - others much more straightforward. Not gimmicky, very good

5.0 out of 5 stars My book of the year so far, 1 Nov 2009
This review is from: A Week in December (Hardcover)
An excellent book.

I live and work in West London, and this book portrayed city life very well. It is a London-centric book, but this is all to the good as almost everything of importance that happens in the UK takes place in London. I think that the author has portrayed interconnectedness of London very well.

A top notch book which I thoroughly recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good read, 19 July 2009

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I have previously read 'The Company of Liars' by the same author which I enjoyed, but I felt this one to be even better. A good story with lots of interesting historical detail.
