Origins of the Human Mind
Origins of the Human Mind
Offered by Audible Ltd

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating listen., 12 Jun. 2016
Of all the Great Courses I have listened to, this is by far the best. Captured my interest from start to finish. One learns alot about psychology, neurology, genetics, epigenetics and other things ending with ology or etics.

The best part is the erosion of the nature-nurture conflict one hears so often. How the two forces interact to create a human mind is fascinating.

Another review referred to the exploration of 'humanism' being a fault of the book. However, the main focus is on 'naturlism'. A troll once told me that a lot of pseudointellectuals were on Goodreads. I am beginning to think the troll wasn't as dull as he looked.

Finally, if you are interested in mental illnesses, the course does touch on it. Though not a full exploration, I found the research put forwards pertinent. Understanding traits, childhood development, and the impact of adolescent trauma has helped me personally. I might even listen to the whole course again.

Purchased on Audible.

Interesting rather than fascinating. Heart-touching at times. Shatner comes across as—human. He seems sincere in his regrets.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Healthy Meal for the Ear, 8 Mar. 2016
This audiobook seems well balanced and a pleasure to listen to. A lady with rich experience guides you through the myths of diet, and takes a scientific approach which, of course, is always open to review. Well worth it, and something on which I could make positive steps in my life.

I particularly like the integration of exercise and nutrition in the thinking- an holistic approach built on reductionist building blocks. Scientific in places, but Roberta guides you through.

review Firstly, I'm about 25% through this collection of free-form poems. This, after all, is not like a novel. You dip in, think about each poem, and marvel at the complexity of feeling about Earth, society, and human nature.

I will add more about specific poems as time goes on. For me, currently one of my favourite reads.

4.0 out of 5 stars Treated to a Good Read, 24 May 2015

A crime novel set in a post-war, quaint English village. Well written, with interesting characters, especially inspector Greene and his sidekick, Brown, as they investigate both murderer and motive.

The pace lacks in some instances due to character back stories and musings, but this style of storytelling many readers enjoy. This and the passive style, again ubiquitous among published talent, leads to the loss of a star. This is only a personal preference, rather than a criticism.

Overall, I think this work will be of interest to those who read Agatha Chrisitie, M.C. Beaton, et al, or who like to relax back into the dreamy English countryside, where everybody has a secret, and a story to tell.

4.0 out of 5 stars It has its place., 7 May 2015
This review is from: Goodreads for Authors (Paperback)
Goodreads is a place for readers. Ms Campbell-Scott recognises this. She begins with a button-by-button account of how to join the site, to add books to shelves, to upload a profile picture, to join groups . . . until finally, how to become a Goodreads Author.

In Part 2, the marketing juices flow. A smattering of technical jargon helps establish Ms Campbell-Scott's marketing credentials, as she refers to her own children's story, but so often as to raise suspicion. This method she advocates in her approach to groups: join groups, linger until you know how it operates, find a few conversations with ... how many friends have they got? Ah, they are a moderator of a group with how many members? Mmm... let us be friends, and by the way, did I tell you about my book?

Get your book in the Great Goodreads Giveaway! Thousands will shelve it! None will purchase it, and there exists only a chance the winners may review it. But it is great!

Yes, in my humble opinion, the use of exclamation marks is excessive.

Listopia, ads and other topics are tackled, all with a button-by-button guide. Here, screen shots do help, but they are not always so clear on a kindle. I wait for the new holographic kindle to arrive: perhaps Ms Campbell-Scott will release a pop-up version?

This book is good for Goodreads dummies, newbies who struggle with the labyrinth of dense text and author pages that pulse with pretension. It will also suite the oldies too, the vampiric authors seeking the lifeblood of reviews with which to raise their novels from torpor. Yes, they hunt, and they will find you.

Why 4 stars? Because this is probably the way to get the job done. It is marketing, through persuasion, through banging out books before unbelieving eyes, with tweeted headlines that read, "The Blah Witch Project, from the International Best-Selling Author, Penny Akanony.'

This Goodreads Guidebook loses a star for the plethora of training courses offered in its final pages. But at least they are all at ridiculous discounts, just because I purchased the book.

What a fantastic product. I use it to help in the editing of my short stories and novels. Now, sitting in the garden, i do not strain my eyes at a laptop screen that needs recharging after two hours. Now, I make notes while in bed, allowing me to work while others sleep. And when I wander the Scottish Highlands in search of inspiration, I will take this wonder with me, and search Wikepedia while atop a Munro. Thank you Amazon, for granting this struggling artist such a tool.

4.0 out of 5 stars Concise read that would benefit from expansion., 8 Sept. 2014

Concise writing lends clarity to this work.

I did get a lot of out of it, and Olivia certainly has been there and wore the T-shirt, most likely handmade. I recommend it, though wish for a more comprehensive guide.

The 25 ways are rather general, leaving a lot to be desired if you have no idea what SEO is, or are a Luddite. I would have preferred a book of say 200 pages thick, with a price tag of £2. In it, worked examples surrounding a generic a case study, together with screen shots, would take a beginner from basics to success. Even if not expanded, links beneath each section to sources of learning more relevant information would benefit the current edition.

I would give this work 3.5/5.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit of a rip off, 4 Jan. 2013

Twilight targets the teenage super romance market... full of gush. That is why it sells. Lots of vampire lore is ripped off from Anne Rice, including a concept similar to the masquerade. All the vampires, as in Anne Rice's books, have different powers.

Vegetarian vampires kind of defeat the concept of what a vampire is all about. There is really nothing evil going on, except...

sometimes i wonder if the veneer of civility masking the monster within is pretty much what humans are themselves.

Monsters in masks of civility.

But, as movies go, not too bad if you like this sort of thing, but not real vampire story telling.
