5.0 out of 5 stars Commander Guzman returns in this exciting sequel to The Sentinel., 18 Sept. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The sequel to The Sentinel sees secret policeman Guzmán posted to the Basque Country in the 1950's, where he is haunted by his past and faced with rising nationalism and old vendettas. In the present, Ana Maria Galindez is investigating the scandal of the children stolen at birth during Franco's dictatorship. As in The Sentinel, the stories are linked, and revelations in the present give clues about past events. This is not for the faint hearted - there are detailed descriptions of violence and torture. The plot is satisfyingly complex and fast paced. Guzmán's cynical wit and charisma makes him a hugely attractive hero despite his many failings. More of his past is revealed and the reader can't help rooting for him as he seeks to complete his mission and return to his beloved Madrid. A really exciting novel which hints that there is more to come. I hope so!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking story for girls aged 10 upwards., 6 Mar. 2014
This review is from: Girl With A White Dog (Paperback)
I read this book to see if it would be suitable for my 13 year old daughter, and will definitely be recommending it to her. It tells the story of Jess, a girl in her early teens, living in present day multicultural Britain, who is beginning to see that life isn't always easy, and that apparently "good" people are not always what they seem. I would recommend this book for all young teenagers, who are starting to look at the world with fresh eyes, as they leave behind the certainties of childhood and enter the uncertainties of adolescence. They will be able to identify with Jess in this story, The author deals with the legacy of the Second World War, and issues of racial prejudice, with great sensitivity.

5.0 out of 5 stars My 10 year old daughter loved this book!, 16 Jan. 2011
This review is from: Skating by Grace (Paperback)
My daughter walked round the house all week with her head in the book, and pronounced it wonderful. So I read it too, and can only agree. It is about two girls whose backgrounds couldn't be more different, but who develop a very believable friendship. The author has a great understanding about the moods and peer pressure among pre-teen girls. Life is not all sweetness and light, and there are real problems to be overcome. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Twig Trilogy, 23 April 2009
My 11-year old son read this and this is what he says about it:" this is probably the best book I have ever read and by a huge margin.Every thing about it is absoloutely perfect and makes for epic reading. It may be a bit big but so is Harry Potter 5 and to be honest with you, I'd rather read this.Paul Stewart and Chris Riddel's ingenuity knows no bounds and it is a crime that this is not as successful as better-selling books that are actually worse than this. The Edge Chronicles are simply in auniverse of their own."
