Getting to Yes: Negotiating an agreement without giving in
Getting to Yes: Negotiating an agreement without giving in
by Roger Fisher
Edition: Paperback
Price: 6.29

5.0 out of 5 stars Another essential read, 23 Oct 2013

Negotiation is everywhere in life; with your partner, kids, parents, siblings, colleagues, neighbours, suppliers, customers, ... the list is endless. In my view, Roger Fisher has written the definitive work about negotiation. The logic / psychology behind his ideas are sound; the framework he presents to implement those ideas is thorough.

Adopting his strategy means fewer escalating conflicts, a better understanding of what makes the other person 'tick', few concessions and generally better outcomes for both parties. What helps as well that it's a small and easily readable book; it's not padded out to create a mighty tome. One of my top-10 business books; wholeheartedly recommended.

Persuasive Business Proposals: Writing to Win More Customers, Clients, and Contracts
Persuasive Business Proposals: Writing to Win More Customers, Clients, and Contracts
by Tom Sant
Edition: Paperback
Price: 12.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential for anyone who has to write proposals, 23 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Almost everyone in business has to put their proposals in written form, and deliver this to customers, colleagues, and sometimes suppliers. Nobody is taught how to do this; and yet, writing proposals that either win (customers) or get accepted (senior management, suppliers) can and will make a significant difference to your business and your career. This book is on my top10 list of business book, and it has transformed the process of proposal writing (and their quality!) within my business. We went form a 30-odd % win-rate to a spell where we didn't lose any bid ... Do I need to say more?

The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don't Work and What to Do About It
The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don't Work and What to Do About It
by Michael E. Gerber
Edition: Paperback
Price: 8.39

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for every budding entrepreneur, 23 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The cook starts a restaurant, the mechanic a garage; and why 80% of them fail within the first year. Having started a business from scratch and having been lucky enough to survive, I recognise every mistake Michael Gerber describes. I have made them all myself, and probably invented a few new ones along the way.

Everyone who starts a business or thinks about starting a business should read this book. It will save your sanity, your relationship and help you be successful in your new business. I know few other books that are as easy to read and yet as comprehensive as this one. An essential read.

2.0 out of 5 stars Buyer beware! This is Kosher Bridge 2 renamed, 23 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I love this book - and hate it too. If you are (as I am) a fan of the Rabbi and his followers, you will already have Kosher Bridge and Kosher Bridge 2 on your bookshelf. Both are hilarious, and a wholeheartedly recommended read. Where I'm less amused is that this book IS Kosher Bridge 2 - except re-published under a new title. I effectively now have the same book twice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bit quirky but excellent value, 2 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Excellent little camera. The instructions are not quite in line with the operation, so some trial and error is involved in getting it to work. but it does support a 32Gb memory card.
Operations: after switching the camera on, press once long for the 'operations' light glow bright green. The camera is now in stand-by mode. Now two short sharp presses put the camera in motion sensitive mode (what I guess most people want). One more long press finishes the current recording and puts the camera back in standby, after which you can switch it off and hook up to a computer for viewing / downloading.

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Given that charging the fire is a lengthy process, knowing how much juice you have left, and how long it wil last is very useful. Wholeheartedly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bridge as it should be written about, 25 July 2008
This review is from: I Love This Game (Paperback)
Bridge books come in a number of categories; there are technical tomes, quiz based approaches, biographies etc. It is relatively rare for a book to combine a number of these themes, and even rarer for the author to be able to mould those diverse topics into a good read.

Sabine Auken has done just that. In a style that is somewhat reminiscent of "The Bridge Bum" by Alan Sontag, she describes in a highly individual way her life at the bridge table; and what a colourful life it is! She is blessed with that rarest of human qualities: clarity of mind, and she uses it to analyse both life and bridge in a fascinating way.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, and can wholeheartedly recommend it.

Marcus Aurelius - The Dialogues
Marcus Aurelius - The Dialogues
by Alan Stedall
Edition: Hardcover
Price: 9.95

5.0 out of 5 stars Compulsory reading, 25 July 2008
Alan Stedall has done something remarkable; he has taken his own doubts about religion, searched for alternatives, and created a compelling filosophy out of the notes by Marcus Aurelius. His approach is compact, yet easy to read and flawlessly argued. He integrates moral and spiritual issues, and comes up with real-life advice.

For me, this is easily the best book I've read in a long time, as it addresses issues and concepts that have been swirling as a nebulous mass in my brain and organises them coherently. I read his book in one go; something that after my painful experiences with filosophy in university I did not think was possible.

Because of the issues Alan addresses, and the clear, elegant way in which he presents his thoughts, I'd say that this book is compulsory reading for anyone who has ever had thoughts and/or doubts about "life and the universe" - and who hasn't?

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly readable book with excellent play hands, 25 Dec 2001
Jeff Meckstroth shows in this book why he is considered to be one of the worlds best players. Step by step, he takes the reader through very difficult play hands, and the reasoning behind them. Some of the finer points would certainly have escaped my notice. Although the narrative is a little dry at times, the hands are worth serious study by any advanced player. Well recommended.
