A great all-round book with which one can go anywhere in Spain either freelancing or on a package tour! I have the first Fodor's from 1955, which is still an interesting book, but of course the latest edition is more helpful now.

Going Rogue: An American Life
Going Rogue: An American Life
by Sarah Palin

It seemed to me at the time that this was a book that had to be read. Clearly a figure like Sarah Palin was always going to be extremely controversial, and it was interesting to read what the person in question had to say about the whole business of running for the presidency, albeit as the possible stand-in for the actual president in event of emergency only. John McCain seems to be in remarkably good health for a man who has gone through what he had to endure in earlier life, so perhaps it would not have ever happened that she became president. Reading on about her in the book gave me the feeling that it was one thing to be controversial, and to be attacked for taking an ultra-conservative stand politically, because that is the price to be paid for doing that, but quite another to make a mistake which gave the opponents a reasonable excuse to criticise overall fitness or preparedness for a seriously important job. The worry with her seems to be that the searching criticism did inevitably find some weakness to highlight, and recovering from this was only partly accomplished by publishing this book. However, I do not agree with those who tried to dismiss it as insubstantial, it explains perfectly well how she came to be one of America's leading conservatives.

Of course we know well that in the States they speak the same language as us, and the five figure "zipcode" is their postcode, but there is a sharp division in sites in the US between those which might accept a British postcode as equivalent and those which simply cannot accept it for an order of goods. The complicated rules there about import and export are one more thing that divides us from them, but it is interesting always to have the chance to look into their world and how different it is through stories like this one. Perhaps it is our duty to look at grittier studies of the realities of life in America today, but it would be a mistake to overlook a production like this solely on that account, I believe.

I'm always interested to read the further adventures of the beautiful people who live away off there in Beverley Hills, California. Happening to see that this was available, I ordered it and was for a short time able to enter their world as a silent onlooker. But somehow their way of life seems unattainable in the more prosaic surroundings of West Yorkshire!

It has often seemed to me that what our defence forces lack, but which would be really useful for the sort of wars that have to be fought these days, is a super-helicopter like Airwolf! Be that as it may, I find in the more humdrum world of selling furniture that there can be days which just seem to go on forever, and all I want to do when it finally does drag to some kind of a conclusion is go home and watch Airwolf in action. I was sorry to hear that Ernest Borgnine, who was in it, died last year (aged 96), and hope that Jan-Michael Vincent is still alive and well!

This is another nice compilation of French light/popular music from the early days of the twentienth century onwards, with a few numbers that were completely new to me although part of the established genre in France. French pop music is always intriguing, at least to me, precisely because it is not an accepted part of the mass market here in Britain. Sometimes they sing in English and sometimes in French, reminding me that it is of course necessary for us all to stick at those school French lessons for the benefits (somewhat obscure) later in life!

All of Thongor's adventures are interesting, but I found that this was an alternative version of a novel I had read before under a different title.

This album is legendary, and I had to own it for that reason, but it is also a very useful CD for background music when the alternative might be strained silence.

Steve Martin's quirky comic style works better in some of the films than others, but here he seems to manage to pull off a good sequel to the original jokey version of the much older black and white film of the same name.

Maybe some found his style a little dated, but it seems to me that he was a good singer of traditional pub favourites, and he does that here. Sometimes that is what is needed.
