Land of Promise: An Economic History of the United States
Land of Promise: An Economic History of the United States
by Michael Lind
Edition: Paperback
Price: £10.06

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliasnt and illuminating, except for the last chapter, 23 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Right up to the last part this book is brilliant and highly illuminating. Then Prof Lind cannot resist the temptation to proclaim what should happen next. And then starts to mix up "ought" and "is" and forgets that the road to paradise passes through hell (Popper: don't think utopian, but be a piecemeal social engineer).

This book rehashes outdated marxian and hegelian thinking.

2.0 out of 5 stars irritation, 18 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The Economist was very enthousiastic, so I bought it. The book did not deliver. It is fascinating to read how normal life was just before the beginning of the catastrophe, but becomes irritating when no connection is made

1.0 out of 5 stars disappointment, 3 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
neither a history nor literature nor a picture book (most photographs are irrelevant to the story) I.e. according to this book Yeo-Thomas entered World 1 service at the tender age of 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars History, organizational science and an entertaining thriller all in one cover!, 27 Dec. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
For three types of readers this is a really great book:

For historians because this book contains the key to understanding Englandspiel
For organizational economists because this book contains a real life description of control loss
For lovers of thrillers with ample time, enrgy and patience on their hands, because if you really dig into this funny and extremely entertaining story becomes a fantastic tale of suspense.

1.0 out of 5 stars not the definitive history of SOE, 26 Nov. 2011
It's all in, but that's all. Long on facts, with opinions sprinkled in. Short on thorough analysis. Tables, maps that make things clear, especially in the ongoing debate about Englandspiel.

Opinions extremely doubtful. now and then even callous: for instance when he compares the number of victims ("six score") of Englandspiel with the holocaust.

Identity and Violence: The Illusion of Destiny
Identity and Violence: The Illusion of Destiny
by Amartya Sen
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.98

4.0 out of 5 stars a great book, 10 Oct. 2011
a really great book by a great man. The answer to Wilders, lePen and their freinds and that little racist/sexist/simplifying corner in everybodys mind.
The one thing it lacked was a strict editor, because at the end it becomes tedious. That cost it a fifth star;

2.0 out of 5 stars a compilation, 10 Oct. 2011
This review is from: Counterinsurgency (Spiral-bound)
a compilation of articles/essays on the subject. probably very interesting points for the professional; for me, it did not deliver the picture. a disappointment

The Oxford Book of French Chansons: Vocal score
The Oxford Book of French Chansons: Vocal score
by Frank Dobbins
Edition: Paperback
Price: £18.95

3.0 out of 5 stars great, with one important restriction, 26 Aug. 2011
This collection of chansons is great and very entertaining and inspiring..
Only, why did they save paper and print it so small that the music can hardly be used to sing or perform?
