5.0 out of 5 stars Great Reference book, 1 Dec 2012
This review is from: Fashion (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Have you ever read books and the descriptions of what the characters are wearing and not have a clue what they mean? This book will help you, it has a great glossary at the back describing styles of necklines, types of trousers as well as other fashion terms.
This is mainly a great look at the history of fashion over the last three thousand years. It gives fascinating look at the history of fashion as well as insight into the fact that us humans have been doing insane things to ourselves in the name of fashion for centuries. Some of the clothing - men's, women's, sport, evening attire and casual clothes - is absolutely gorgeous and some of it is barking mad! The height of some of wigs is beyond of belief and the wasp waist make me wince just looking at them.

This will be a handy reference book for anybody with an interest in fashion or writing about different periods of time. Big and large it's a little cumbersome but it's a nice quality book with clear colourful pictures and indepth historical details.

Travalo Pure Essentials Refill Perfume Atomizer
Travalo Pure Essentials Refill Perfume Atomizer
Price: 7.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Brillant little device, 21 Nov 2012
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is a great little device. When I go away I like to pack the bare essentials, put it down to camping alot growing up and having limited space. So when I go away it's perfect, I pick my current favourite perfume and decant some into the little bottle and pack it.
This perfume bottle is about the size of forefinger, hard wearing durable material and under a 100ml so perfect for flights, there is pump action device at the bottom of the bottle into which you use to 'pour' the perfume into the bottle.
The only downside is you need to make sure the perfume bottle is completely empty before putting another perfume in.

Casino Royale
Casino Royale

This is the only Bond story I have read and I loved Dan Stevens reading of it! Ian Fleming's detailed descriptions were wonderfully spoken, making it feel like we were seeing everything from the view point of Bond.

This story tells of James Bond gamble at the tables to bankrupt Le Chiffre who has been using money that doesn't belong to him but a huge criminal organisation SMERSH. He needs a big win at the card table to make up the
shortfall otherwise he is going to be in a lot of trouble.
I really liked the short interview at the end with Dan Stevens who admits how this book made he rethink Bond as the story shows several sides of his personality, hardened spy, romantic and uncertain after his torture.
A great story to listen will be looking out for more in this series to add to my collection.

Grimm Tales: For Young and Old (Penguin Hardback Classics)
Grimm Tales: For Young and Old (Penguin Hardback Classics)
by Philip Pullman
Edition: Hardcover
Price: 15.69

4.0 out of 5 stars Short and sweet, 13 Oct 2012
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
A wonderful collection of old fairy tales for the Grimm brothers but modernised slightly by Philip Pullman. There are stories that everyone knows Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood and Snow White as well as lots of other stories that are just as great and simple.
Each story has a little information after it of how it came to be in the collection from the Brothers Grimm and others stories that it is similar too.
The only thing that annoyed is how rude and derogatory Pullman is about the fairy story 'the girl with no hands' who remains faithful to her religion and that faith is rewarded. I know he isn't a fan of religion but there is no need for the way he slates this as some of the things he said about it being really unbelievable he accepts in others stories as supernatural qualities but the fact it is religious powers makes it unbelievable and 'never-shaken piety is nauseating'. It's a bit of double standard that annoys me but it just the one story and you can still enjoy the story by simply ignoring Pullman's commentator the end and moving on to the next story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nothing special but it's a good holiday book!!!, 31 Aug 2012
This review is from: The Out of Office Girl (Paperback)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is a typical love story. Heroine's life is not going the way she wants, her jobs stalling, her boyfriend isn't responding to her except via brief texts and the only thrills she's gets is by watching films with Luther in. Suddenly everything changes her boyfriend dumps her via text and she suddenly finds herself being sent to Italy to help edit Luther's autobiography! Thinking maybe this will kick start not only her career but her love life too she heads off with her head in the clouds only to come down with a bump as she has to deal with lost luggage, moody actress, a sad ghost writer and an agent who doesn't want his actor to do the book!
This is a standard love story girl meets man of her dreams and he isn't really anything like she imagined so ends up falling for the moody guy instead, blossoms in the new environment and manages to save her career in the progress but then things start to go wrong again! fairly predictable story but it's well written, I really liked the characters and was very happy when Alice, the heroine found her back bone and gave her ex a dressing down in front of his new girlfriend!
It's not a classic love story that will not be remembered for ever but it is a nice love story that is easy to read and good for a break from heavier novels and perfect for a holiday read.

The Lost Library
The Lost Library
by A.M. Dean
Edition: Paperback
Price: 5.03

3.0 out of 5 stars Alright but lacking something, 19 Aug 2012
This review is from: The Lost Library (Paperback)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is an interesting story idea but it doesn't quite deliver. The idea is good, The Library of Alexandria is real, it wasn't destroyed all those centuries ago. Instead it went underground protected by a secret society. This society is now threatened with members dying all over the world. The leader of this group the keeper has left messages for Emily Weiss a professor from his university before being murdered. Emily finds her life thrown into turmoil when she ends up having to leave the USA and travel to Oxford.
Emily then has to follow clues leading her around the world to discover the location of the library. But following her is another organisation who want the library for their own evil purposes.
It's a simple story with a good idea but it lacks drama. I found myself quite able to put the book down and leave it without feeling the need to pick it up and find out what happened next. There wasn't enough complications or terror it's more like a poorer version of the da Vinci code. Needed more drama and tension and less history but for the author's first book it was interesting. I would be prepared to read the author's next book and see if they improve with experience depending on the story line and if it included the same characters.

Sherlock Holmes: Hound of the Baskervilles
Sherlock Holmes: Hound of the Baskervilles
by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Edition: Audio CD
Price: 12.64

5.0 out of 5 stars Everyone knows this story, 5 Aug 2012
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is the one Sherlock Holems story nearly everybody knows. It's one of the best, supernatural, romance, betrayal and a murder!
Extremely well read by Derek Jacobi, one of my favourite people for reading audio books.
This is the story of the Hound of the Baskervilles, a demonic hound that has haunted the Baskerville family since Sir Roger Baskerville kidnapped a local girl and chased her to her death only for him to be found with a large hound ripping his own throat out with yards of the dead body. The story starts with the arrival of Dr Mortimer at Baker Street to talk to Holmes and ask his advice. His friend, the latest Baskerville has died of fright which he believes was brought on by his fear of the Baskerville hound legend except that he is worried there may be more to the legend then his first thought as yards away from where the dead body was found was the large imprint of a giant hound! Dr Mortimer is worried about the iminent arrival of the new Sir Henry Baskerville and whether he should tell him about the legend and his concerns over his uncles death.

This is a great story in which Holmes doesn't appear much at first so Watson is left to try and follow his friend's teachings to solve the mystery. When Holmes does arrive on the scene he quickly helps clear up several red herrings and dead ends to show you who the murderer is. Watson and Holmes then have try to catch him before he manages to fulfil his task and kills Sir Henry.

Great classic story a must on any Sherlock Holmes fan shelf!

Sherlock Holmes: The Sign of the Four
Sherlock Holmes: The Sign of the Four

4.0 out of 5 stars A romantic Holmes story!, 31 July 2012
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is one of the only romantic stories Conan Doyle wrote that affects the main characters. Watson meets his wife. It's an interesting story about a moment of greed that haunts a man for his entire life and ends up costing more than just his own life.
The Sign of Four starts with Holmes in a lethagic mood taking cocaine to keep off the boredom of every day life and Watson lambasting him finally for doing it. Then in walks Mary with an intriguing problem, ten years ago her father disappeared without a word or clue as to what happened to him. Then four years later after answering an advertisement asking for her location she starts to receive a large expensive pearl and gets one every year for six years until now when she has been asked to come and see her benefector as she is a wronged woman.
Holmes and Watson go with her to meet this man and after getting some of their answers they also get several more questions as they are taken on another turn of the tale as they go off to claim Mary's share in a huge treasure only to find a dead body which brings them into contact with a detective who is cynical about Holmes talents.

This is a single story from Conan Doyle and althought not as famous as some of his other stories this is a good story and well worth having in you collection. Again well read by the fabulous Derek Jacobi who manages to give each character it's own voice. Very enjoyable listening

4.0 out of 5 stars Nifty little case with lots of features., 26 July 2012
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I can't believe I am getting excited over a suitcase but I love this case!

Not only is it light when empty, so the majority of your weight allowance will be your belongings and not your case but it has lots of features.
There is a small zip pouch in the back for paperwork and passports, another zip above that where there are two straps that you can get out and attached turning the case into a backpack, very cool! A large zip at the front for a large pouch that will expanded to fit quite a surprising amount of things. Inside there is a zip pocket and straps to hold the clothing tight as well as a little wall that can be pulled out for storing smaller things or pushed in so it doesn't take up any space. Plus there three handles, one of the top when held portrait and one of the top when held landscape way. The third handle is the a telescopic one.

It's a dark colour so it won't show the dirt and a fabric material instead of a hard case so it's got some give but it is sturdy.
And the bit I love the best, it has wheels to help with pulling it along behind, hence the telescopic handle but what I love is that is is a good height for me, I'm five foot ten inches in bare feet, six foot plus in heels. I can pull it along behind me very comfortably without getting back ache.
I know this is on the expensive side but luggage is one area of your life where you shouldn't skimp of money, jeans, shoes and winter coats being some others. The better quality the product and Berghaus is a good quality company, the longer it'll last and the more money you save.

3.0 out of 5 stars Need to read the others first., 12 July 2012
This review is from: Circle of Shadows (Paperback)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I have only read the first of these books and this is the fourth. Although stand alone stories they do follow on from each other so going into this one I wasn't certain of who all the characters are and what their stories were and there was nothing to tell me other than to go back and read the other two first.

However I carried on and once I got past that it was a good book with an interesting story and a really good solution to the story. It just didn't grip me and pull me in and make me want to carry on reading until the end when all the interweaving stories connected and you found out what what was going on.

If you've read the other three than this is a good next step but if you haven't read them I strongly suggest that you do or pick another book to read.
